College sports are a significant part of American culture and generate billions of dollars in revenue every year. While universities profit greatly from the work of college athletes, the athletes themselves receive no compensation for their hard work. In this essay, I will argue that college athletes should be paid for their work.
One of the reasons why college athletes should be paid is that they bring in a significant amount of revenue for their universities. As noted in "The Case for Paying College Athletes," “The college sports industry generates $11 billion in annual revenues. Fifty colleges report annual revenues that exceed $50 million. Meanwhile, five colleges report annual revenues that exceed $100 million.” Text 1 line 1-3 This money is generated through TV contracts, merchandise sales, and ticket sales, all of which are made possible by the hard work of college athletes. It’s only fair that the athletes should receive a portion of this revenue, especially considering the fact that they are putting in the hours of practice and competing in games.

As noted in "It's Time to Pay College Athletes," “Players are essentially working full-time football jobs while going to school; they deserve to be paid more than a scholarship. Because even full-ride athletic scholarships don’t cover the full cost of attending school.” Text 2 line 15-17 In addition, college athletes are often required to spend long hours practicing and competing, which makes it difficult for them to have part-time jobs. Many of them come from low-income backgrounds and could use the money to support themselves and their families. Additionally, college sports generate a lot of revenue for universities, and it seems unfair that the athletes who are actually responsible for producing that revenue don't see any of it. However, there are some arguments against paying student athletes.
College athletes should be paid because they put in many hours of practicing, they have to pay for living, and they cannot get a job. College athletes should be paid because they put in many hours of practicing. Some articles have said that athletes spend up to 40 hours a week in the gym, or practicing. Since the athletes are constantly working out they don't have time to make money. Without any money they are unable to buy extra food.
If college athletes were getting paid, more than likely other students would have to pay more in tuition and in other fees. Athletes getting paid would create the misunderstanding that getting an education would be less important than trying to get involved in a sport. The importance of academics would go straight down the drain. Along with all of these points, the majority of college athletes already technically get paid through scholarship money.

If the athletes are the ones bringing in the money the school earns from the games, why shouldn’t they get some of the money that is made? Paying athletes would lead to a better education for them because they would worry less about trying to survive without an actual job. It would also allow the athletes the ability to go on vacations if they received a monthly stipend. This is necessary for student-athletes because they have the constant stress of trying to become better than their opponents. Scholarships alone are not sufficient to support student-athletes, so they need to receive an actual pay to account for the time they
Paying college athletes has been a huge topic over the past few years, athletes are the reason why these colleges are bringing revenue to their programs. Most athletes' goal is to become professional and get paid for what they love doing but a couple of years ago college programs would not allow the athletes to get endorsement deals because it would take revenue out of their programs. College athletes should get paid because of the money they generate for the school and how much they have worked to get where they are. The amount of attention a college program gets when recruiting a top athlete is game-changing.

The money that these young men and women will make will not change their competitiveness and love for the game, it will only ensure that they are able to make ends meet by providing themselves with necessities.
