High School Sports Should be Funded Every year 300,000 students are participating in sports (Gould 1). The School District has been funding the athletics program, which has been benefiting many of the students’ lives for several years. The discontinuation of high school sports will cause many students to loose the health, social and educational benefits provided by participating in athletics. The School District should continue to fund sports because they benefit students. A major reason is that sports keep kids healthy. R. Dawn Comstock, an investigator at the Center for Injury Research and Policy stated “We have an epidemic of obesity in this country, and sports is one of the ways for kids to incorporate exercise in their lives” (qtd. in Perkel 2). Most kids don’t get active anymore. They stay inside …show more content…
This notion is supported by Dr. Daniel Gould, who believes that “Children who participate in sports have increased educational aspirations, closer ties to school and increased occupational aspirations in youth” (1). People against the funding of high school sports think that parents and society are placing more emphasis than ever before and, “[P]ressures athletic personnel to deviate on winning from the athlete- centered educational and personal development mission” (Gould 1). However, athletes strive to do better in class. Michael Lorenc, a high school basketball coach believes that “those who seem to have an overwhelming schedule where they’re playing maybe multiple sports, and high academic schedules, they tend to do better than those who don’t do anything extracurricularly” (Gray). Balancing sports and school makes athletes put more effort into keeping up grades while playing the sport they love. Sports motivate athletes to be better students, so funding sports would just keep kids inspired to do good at school, not cause them to get
Amanda Ripley, the author of “The Case Against High-School Sports”, made many good points that can create much controversy when it comes to high-school sports, due to the cost and the academic problems it may be creating amongst the students. She interviewed many people who have experiences banning high-school in order to save money for their school district and the school itself. Ripley wants to bring into attention all the money that is used on high-school sports when districts tend to use a minimal amount on academics. I have come to an agreement with her point-of-views due to several reasons: sports are the main focus of any high-school that may have sports, the tax money being provided to the school district has been used on sports than
College students need to live off something so receiving money for playing would be a big help for them. Also they need to buy the necessaries throughout their college career but they need if they got paid that would be a big help for them. Not all of the sports players get a Scholarship. That's why it's hard for people to buy and get books for their classes so therefore if you need to buy something you really won't have the money which will also have you failing your classes.
Athletes should be able to receive a portion of the money that comes from merchandise with their image. Finally, they and are not offered medical or death insurance. Allowing these students to be paid can help benefit their future sports and academic career. During a regular sports season, college athletes are focused on practice and school because of this they don’t have the time to be able to get a regular job to make money of their own. These students often go to colleges and universities that offer them scholarships for sports.
After all, colleges are founded with the purpose of educating people. The first concern with a college should not be sports, it should be education, no matter how much money they make off of athletics. So with this in mind, why would you give extra money to athletes instead of students? Many division one student athletes already receive full-ride scholarships that cover all of their college-related costs even though they are less qualified academically than many other students who are not athletes. If colleges are going to give extra money to anybody, it should be the outstanding students who are more qualified academically because the theme and purpose of a college is
Some students could really use the extra help by getting money when their playing and working hard on their favorite sport. Students that are attending college have already worked so hard to get through all of their school years, so I believe they deserve this. Also, college is already very expensive for most students attending. This would help them out a lot.
Courtney Stawarz says, “Sports are important, I understand that. However, Elizabeth Kolbert has a valid argument.” She says, while Americans tend to put more emphasis on sports rather than learning, it is not the children that are at fault. She sees how sports are related to grades being you have to make sure you are eligible to play. Children have to watch their grades in order to be able to play sports in schools.
Some think College Athletes should be paid, but others believe they shouldn’t. However, research shows that College athletes should be paid. If so the money could help students pay for their necessities, make rules fairer, and help students become more motivated. One reason College athletes should be paid is that the money could help students pay for necessities. When College students join College sports teams they are giving up a lot of time to
My first reason is that the kids get stressed about handling sports, a job, and school. Recent studies say 1 out of 4 athletes get stressed from juggling all those responsibilities. Expert Andy Schwarz say “paying kids for athletics would cut down on 50 percent of that stress.” An article from Debate Club supports my opinion and “The huge amount of money being made off college sports has led some to question whether student-athletes can be considered amateurs any longer, and whether they
Schools are debating on whether or not to take away sports. Students are constantly getting serious injuries from playing them. Therefore, recreational exercise should be eliminated because they cost too much , students will have better grades, and schools are being distracted by sports and are not focusing on education. Schools are spending great deals of money on new equipment for sports and they don’t realize how much cash they are actually spending. According to Amanda Ripley in her article “Should Your School Get Rid of Sports?”
The stress can get so intense, it feels paralyzing. That’s why it is important than ever for schools to invest in their athletic programs,” states the sports article “Should Schools get rid of Sports.” Schools should keep their sports programs because they help improve academics, help improve mental and emotional health, and improves social skills like being on a team. Schools should not get rid of their sports programs because they help with student’s academics.
In the article "The Case Study Against High-School Sports" author Amanda Riley delves into the idea that school sports may have a negative effect on the students. Although evidence is provided, as someone who has first handedly experienced the benefits and positive outcomes school sports has given me, I can't help but stand beside them. Through gaining leadership and dedication skills, as well as meeting new people and finding a hero within a coach, school sports has equipped me with valuable
According to Amanda Ripley, maintaining a grass field, and cleaning supplies cost at least $20,000 each time (11). If schools got rid of sports, it is said that they could save $150,000 which could then go toward more important things in school (Ripley, 11). This shows that if schools were to persuade their students into getting rid of sports, they could save more money that could then go into educational activities. This is important because this can help school owners save more money than they would have before removing school sports.
Why High Schools should keep sports I believe high schools should keep sports because they help grow leadership skills, it evolves social relationships, and it shows an increase in student academics. Seniors normally get great leadership skills and are expected to because they encourage younger team members whether they 're a team captain or just on the team in general. The fact that they 're older and more responsible means they to set a good example on the younger ones so they do act right. For example teamwork is a great leadership skill to have because it shows that you are able to work with others.
About 26 million kids participate in school sports, imagine how much that number would drop if we cut out sports. No more basketball, football, volleyball, track, and more. Let 's just stand here and watch the number drop to 15 million, then 10 million, next 5 million, eventually about 100,000, or less. Why are we gonna take away sports if they have a chance of injuries? Really every sport causes injuries, getting out of bed causes injuries.
It is very important for students to have access to athletic programs at schools. An athletic program at school can help all students learn life lessons. There is one group of under-reported, tenuous students that athletic program can render them successful lives. It is the athletes that are struggling with intense poverty, abuse and homelessness. There are over 1.2 million students in America that are struggling with homelessness.
