Should Harper Lee's How to kill a mockingbird book be a part of the school's required book curriculum? The issue with the book is the language and the time the book takes place and how black characters are treated in How To kill a Mockingbird. How to kill a mockingbird should not be a part of a school's curriculum in today's world. Why should How to kill a MockingBird not be a part of the school's curriculum? First off because the book is outdated and it does not represent our society today. It has very complex and touchy subjects in the story for example the book talks about rape and racism. It's not always easy for teachers to talk about it in schools because of the language used in the text. For some students the words used and actions said in the book are hard to hear and can make them uncomfortable. The book also does not explain the n-word is a derogatory word. How black characters are shown in the book is hurtful to black students' image of themselves and they can feel if it's pointed towards them. The book can be hurtful towards people of color and can make them feel as if they're outta place and not wanted. …show more content…

To add to what has been said before is that the book glorifies this white savior and only white people can do what actions of Atticus does. The environment that students are in should invite them and not make them feel uncomfortable. Students should not have to sit in class listening to words that are harmful and hurtful to them. In some schools, they read the book as early as 8th grade. Some students of color may think life isn't fair from the start because of how the book shows Tom Robison obviously not doing the crime but still being convicted and sentenced to prison.
