Most Americans would agree that spanking at home; regardless of the research showing, how it might inflict lasting psychological harm and does small to correct behavior. Being from a different era, disciplinary actions were accepted, and we never failed to respect our elders. Discussing this issue with our dad today, we still have and live by those standards set forth by them. Now critics of those studies, they do not account for the prominence of the issues. Punishing a child were misbehaving, and then they were already more likely to suffer troubles later on. No child received paddling in Texas’ where many school boards banned it. Still, coming from a long line of educators indicate that paddling in the principal’s office will never disappear with legislation, due to Texas is a state of entrenched rural values and stress on local control. Statewide bans failed at least several times. None of the bills made it out of the committee, now parents have the opt-out slips, and administrators agree that it bears an impingement. Today, each school receives a study coordinator who calls the parents before a paddling. The person trained on how to explain the disciplinary action to the student and how to administrate the licks with a paddle, on the average of three times. While participating in sports, our coach would discipline the players by making us run two to three miles in full pads. It worked well, since it only happens once, and we learned our lesson. However, children today feel that if a teacher disciplines them even verbally, the parents want to lodge a suit. Being part of both sides from enforcing the laws and defending the laws, has given us a mixed
Writers tend to use various methods when attempting to persuade their reader. Although numerous approaches exist when discussing persuasion, in the article “No Spanking, No Time-Out, No Problem” writer Olga Khazan persuades her reader by explaining the issues and offering better improving techniques, using rhetoric devices such as pathos, and by using tone of voice. Khazan explains the controversial topic of punishing one’s child by attempting to persuade parents to change their disciplining style (Khazan). Khazan proposes his purpose that though punishment might make a parent feel more at peace with themselves, it will not correct the child’s bad behavior (Khazan).
Is Spanking A Problem Solver? Today's day and age parents try to steer clear of spanking their children and try a more modern approach on parenting trying to give a positive discipline. But does that solve everything? In this article “No Spanking, No Time-Out, No Problem” Alan Kazdin uses several elements throughout this article.

The school's method of teaching using such harsh discipline may have just been their way of preparing them for what the future might hold for
To me spanking should be the last thing a parent need to use as a punishment. I do occasionally spank my children, but only after I have tried everything else (i.e multiple warnings, time outs , and loose privileges). However, as my children gets older I am noticing that I am spanking them less because they are getting to the age where I can talk to them and reason with them more. As a child I was spanked quite often, mostly by my teacher. I grew up in a country where teachers are free to spank children in classrooms whenever they feel the need to.
In the article “No Spanking, No Time-out, No Problems”, Olga Khazan uses many rhetorical strategies to support and persuade her audience. That traditional punishment methods of parents will not change a child’s/children’s unruly behavior overall, but positive reinforcement will increase the chances of better behavior not only now, but in the future as well. “Positive reinforcement is the presentation of a pleasurable consequence following a behavior” (Craighead). This twist to traditional discipline teaches children to work towards a resolution instead of teaching them to lean toward violence. “For example, the way that parents discipline their children is how children discipline their peers” (Khazan).
I think that, in order to raise a well-disciplined child, I will have to use physical discipline. People who say spanking obviously don't know how to deal with children. I do not believe that to raise a well-discipline child you need to use physical discipline. I thing that one of the most basic ways we can raise your children is simply by being a good role model for them.
From my own personal experiences, some unruly children only respect a firm spanking with the law prohibiting this practice of parenting it can cause children to go down the wrong path because they don’t have the proper respect for their parents which is where children are supposed to learn respect for an authoritative figure. As the snippet of the comment from Allison, 2014 would suggest it is necessary to spank a child this is evident when the text states “Many of the parenting books that dismissed spanking as wrong pushed that a parent should reason with a child. However, science has proven that due to brain development, it is impossible to reason with a four-year-old.
Spanking is the most common type of punishment in a home, but some also wonder if it’s the right thing to do. Punishing kids through spanking has negative effects on a child’s overall health and is not the right thing to do. Over the years, many researches have been conducted into finding out the repercussions of spanking on children. One of the many outcomes is that children have a poor relationship with their parents in the future.
Will good parenting skills change a child’s bad behavior? Some people may say that to fix a child’s behavior parents should involve punishment. Maybe they will also say that punishment leads to having a well-disciplined child. In the article, “No Spanking, No Time-Out, No Problem,” Olga Khazan proposes a parenting intervention from a child psychologist, she utilizes it to persuade readers along with parents into believing that punishment cannot change negative behavior. Kazdin discusses the causes behind a negative behavior from a child and utilizes it to prove that punishment does not need to be utilized.
This study was conducted on April 25, 2016 by experts at The University of Texas at Austin and the University of Michigan. Elizabeth Gershoff and co-author Andrew Grogan-Kaylor. Their study focuses on what most Americans would see as spanking and not a potentially abusive behavior. During their study they found that spanking your children can cause them to defy their parents more frequently and can also cause a lifelong mental health issue. It showed as the frequency of spanking increases, the likelihood of anti-social behavior, mental health issues, and aggression also increases.
Spanking is a type of physical punishment involving the act of striking another person to cause pain, generally with an open hand. More severe forms of spanking, such as switching, paddling, belting, caning, whipping, and birching, involve the use of an implement instead of a hand. Parents tend to spank their child to discontinue an undesired behavior. Throughout history there have been many forms of punishment, such as spanking, grounding, and timeouts. However, have you ever thought about the way it affects a child’s life?
