The colonists had one interest. They wanted to be treated fairly. However, they believed the new laws were unfair, so they took action. The colonists resisted and wanted to be free because they thought the British weren’t treating them the way they should be treated. The British treated the colonists aggressively. Document #1 is about the stamp act. “An act for granting and applying stamp duties...towards further defraying the expenses of defending, protecting and securing.” I know that during 1765, the British made the colonists pay taxes on all printed goods like newspapers and playing cards to pay back the cost of the French and Indian War. It was called the stamp act because they would stamp the good after the colonist payed the tax.Document
After the French and Indian war in 1754 England had Great War debts, to be exact 130 million pounds. In order to pay these debts England decided to tax the colonies on the goods that would presumably not anger the colonists. This tax was known as the stamp act. The goods being taxed consist of anything made of paper, playing cards and envelopes including various other items. Because the British parliament did not consult the colonies about this tax placed on paper products, the colonial families decided that they did not want to pay the tax.
The colonists during the Revolutionary War wanted to be free from Britain rule and create a new government that would not only protect their citizen’s rights, but one that would not abuse its power. Colonists at this point in time were feeling that the British government had violated their rights since they were passing taxes without the colonists’ consent and not listening at all to the concerns of the colonists. Just like in Document 1 when it states “Sir William Meredith calls it a republic; but in its present state it is unworthy of the name, because the corrupt influence If the crown”. This displays the harsh governing that Britain applied to all of its colonists since they demanded that they stay influenced to the crown. Britain ended up
The Stamp Act required all the colonist to use stamps on all paper documented goods. Enraged, the colonies protested and demanded their natural rights. Before 1763, Great Britain placed a policy of salutary neglect towards the colonies. This policy didn’t really harmed the colonist in any way, but it did give the colonist a taste of Independence. After the French and Indian war, British was in debt and needed a way to earn large revenue.
Although many would state that the colonies leaving Britain was not justified, many events like the King’s tyrannical behavior, and all of the taxation without representation helped prove that leaving Britain was best for the colonies. Above anything else the colonists believed in their personal rights, and equality. However to pay for a war they did not cause, and to be taxed with no say went against all of their ideas of true independence. The Sons of Liberty was born, the Second Continental Congress was formed, and the Declaration of Independence was made all for the sake of a better future of equality and freedom for the colonies.
The British had said the colonists couldn’t expand west , that was a way that they could prevent war with the Indians. The colonists had the stamp act and colonists had never seen or used stamps. The so colonist were practically being treated unfairly, they were taxed and basically were being enslaved by the British. Britain was taxing the colonies without any depiction.
As explained in document B, The colonists pushed for freedom and separation from Britain due to their natural rights being restrained. The belief of natural rights developed during the American Enlightenment period. The beliefs were that everybody is born equally and the motto for colonists was “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.” In his pamphlet, “Common Sense”, Thomas Paine explains to his fellow colonists that King George III is to blame for restrictions of their rights and he advocated for Independence from Great Britain. Immediately following the eradication of the Stamp Act, Parliament enforced the Declatory Act which forced Patriots to feel the need to loosen Britain’s reign even
The Colonists did not start off wanting independence but as the years went on their relationship with the British government worsened because of all the Proclamations and Acts introduced in the colonies. This resulted in a very disappointing outcome for the British government and an amazing journey for the new Americans who now had a country to
The original colonists were not unhappy under the British crown, but they craved representation in Parliament, where they could have a voice in the tariffs that would be imposed on the colonies. They were refused time and time again, until they lost hope in becoming a respected part of Britain’s domain. Together they stood in solidarity, and they boycotted British goods to symbolize their independent will and their wish to be recognized as an independent nation. Eventually their rebellion erupted into a war, which would end in America’s favor and see the colonies
They all wanted freedom, equal rights, and respect. When the British began to tax the colonist, they became extremely upset and enraged, and because of this the revolution began. The colonists were unified, but also divided. Many of them were fearful for their independence because it would cause problems and turmoil with the new country. They were also divided because imported printing goods were being taxed.
The spontaneous movement against forced taxation demanded Parliament to give the colonists some representation. In a final plea to Great Britain for some form of sovereignty, Samuel Adams wrote, in the Declaration of Rights, “All persons born in the British American colonies are...well-entitled to all the natural, essential, inherent, and inseparable rights, liberties, and privileges of subjects born in Great Britain” (Document 5). The colonists simply wanted the freedoms that British subjects in Britain enjoyed, such as trial by jury, and some representation, like the House of Commons. They were not free, unlike the British merchants, to explore their commercial interests due to the Navigation Laws. The prolonged anger and frustration at the British government, for refusing to grant them their rights,
The British government was not looking for the best of the people. They were only thinking about what they wanted; the government was not interested in what the people wanted so they decided to make decisions on their own, which resulted in changes that form the United States today. Because of this, they were justified in rebelling and declaring independence. One reason why the colonists decided to rebel and declare independence was because of taxation.
During the Colonial Era (1492-1763), colonists were justified in waging war against Great Britain; due to the inequitable Stamp Act, the insufferable British oppression, and the perceived tyranny of King George III, the king of Great Britain, however, the colonists were unjustified in some of their actions. In Colonial America, colonists were justified in waging war against Great Britain, because the Stamp Act was unfair and viewed as punishment. Because of the war, Britain had no other choice but to tax the colonists to pay for the debt. For example, according to document 2, the author states that the act was not only for trade but for “the single purpose of levying money.”
The Quartering Act disrespected the privacy of Americans (Document 5). Moreover, this act allowed British soldiers to barge in on the colonists’ home life, forcing them to provide food, utensils, bedding, firewood, and other objects for the soldiers. In addition to this, the Quartering Act showed that the British were disinterested in how Americans lived their lives in their homes and purposefully sabotaged the colonists’ leadership in their homes, showing that the British controlled the colonists’ homes. The Stamp Act also demonstrated that the British were apathetic towards the colonists’ opinions (Document 6). The Stamp Act taxed newspapers and pamphlets, which outraged the colonists.
In 1765 March 22, The Stamp Act began. It was when American colonists were taxed on any kind of paper product. Such as ship’s paper, legal documents, licenses, newspapers, other publications, and even playing cards were taxed. All of the money that was taxed was used to pay the costs of defending and protecting the American frontier near the Appalachians Mountains. Although this act was unpopular among the colonists.
