In the American colonies between 1763 and 1775, a burning desire for freedom and to rid themselves of the perpetual taxation sparked within the aggravated colonists; leading to the people of the thirteen colonies to declare their separation from Great Britain. The British government placed a multitude of restraints onto the American colonists which limited the colonies ability to develop as a region in the process. In 1763 the Proclamation Act was passed which forbade the colonists to settle West of the Appalachian Mountains and required people who were previously living on that land to move back to the East. The American colonist was extremely frustrated at that passing of this law since they won the French and Indian War for the British …show more content…
The British were in massive debt following the French and Indian war, therefore they placed taxes on the colonists in order to regenerate some of that money lost. The Sugar Act of 1764 taxed the sale of molasses in hopes to gain some lost money, but this act led the people of Boston to boycott the molasses industry. The Stamp Act of 1765 shortly followed, making colonists buy a stamp with every paper product. The rage the colonists felt over the passing of this act, led the colonies to begin to unify as they together boycotted the trade industry. The Townshend Duties of 1767 imposed taxes on glass, lead, paint, paper and tea, but this only led to the colonist to again boycott the trade of those items and start newspaper attack. The Tea Act which took place in 1773, and was one of the last attempts from the British to control the amount of money it was making on the colonies. The Boston Tea Party occurred soon after this act started being enforced, resulting in hundreds of cases of tea being dumped into the Boston Harbour. The British kept on attempting to pass taxes in the American colonies but every new tax they passed fueled the revolutionary flame within the angered
The Stamp Act, which was issued in 1765, taxed all paper documents in the colonies. The Stamp Act was the first Act that was directed towards the colonies alone and was issued because they had an abundance of debt after the Seven Years War. You had to pay taxes for printing legal documents, diplomas, almanacs, broadsides, newspapers, and playing cards. In October nine of the colonies sent someone to the Stamp Act Congress where the colonies drafted the Declaration of Rights and Grievances which was a document that went against the British empire. The colonists also rebelled by not selling any British products.
The Royal Proclamation Act was established October 7, 1763. It was issued to make sure colonists settling in America would not go west of the Appalachian Mountains, where indians would most likely attack them. The colonists did not like this very much because they had just won a ton of land west of the Appalachian mountains that they now could not travel into. They reacted by disregarding the proclamation without thought of any punishments.
Even though the Stamp Act was repealed, parliament created the declaratory act which enforced parliament’s right to make rules to bring the people together. Britain furthered their grasp on the colonies by indirectly taxing them by adding the tax to price causing a rise in prices, known as the Townshend Act. Along with the indirect tax on imported materials there was also a tax of 3 pennies on tea. The indirect taxes caused anger within the colonies and they began to protest, they protested “No taxation without representation” and boycotted british goods, such as tea and british made cloth, and began to make their own. On March 5th, 1770, a group of Boston men surrounded British soldiers and began taunting them, as the group got more and more out of hand the British began firing at them killing several and wounding many (Document 4).
It was an outcome of the Tea Act imposed by British Parliament to restore the East India Company's full refund on the 25% duty imposed for importing tea into Britain. It also permitted the company to export tea to the American colonies on its own account and led to a number of protests from the colonies. On December 16, 1773, a group of colonists boarded the three shiploads of taxed tea in Boston and destroyed the tea by throwing it into Boston Harbor. The event became famously known as the Boston Tea
An important event in North American history was the Proclamation of 1763. The United Kingdom administration oversaw it after the Seven Years' War, also called the French and Indian War, which ended with Britain's victory over France. The Proclamation sets up a structure for interactions with native peoples. It was meant to handle issues due to Britain's expansion into the recently acquired areas. The Proclamation of 1763 profoundly affected the lives of French Canadians and Native Americans in North America, historically and currently.
It was called the sugar act. Then, Parliament passed the stamp act, which the colonists hated even more. They burned stamps. British got annoyed and passed more taxes, like the Townshend act. The colonist were know boycotting them and were protesting so much that all of the taxes and acts were overturned.
In addition, when the King issued the Proclamation of 1763, in which it prohibited settlements beyond the Appalachia Mountains, it caused an disturbance with the colonists who had already settle there because the proclamation ordered them to move elsewhere. Following these changes where numerous of acts being passed, causing more tension with the colonists and British, such as: The Sugar Act (1764), The Stamp Act (1765), Quartering Act (1765), The Townshend Act (1767), as well as some major events that also occurred up until 1775 when the colonists got together and decided it was time to fight for their rights. The colonists had their moments of acting similar to the English government. Since the colonist saw themselves no differently than
This allowed the government to create and pass laws that opposed/neglected the colonist’s opinion. The townshend Act, passed in 1767, was another series of law that the British government used to abuse their power. The series of law that increased/increased taxes on imported goods, such as paint, paper, lead, and tea. The colonists viewed these laws as an abuse of governmental power, because the act went to the king before being looked over by the colony’s legislature. The Tea act was also a law that contributed to the colonists irritation with the government.
To prove that the British forced the colonists to commit to the republican value. Colonial resistance increased between the time period of 1763 and 1776 because of policies that were imposed on America, stirrings of revolt and the Coercive Acts that finally committed the colonist to find for their independence. During the year of 1763, frontiersmen from English colonies quickly began move over the mountains and into tribal lands in the upper Ohio Valley after the defeat of the French. The British feared that escalation would disrupt and threaten their western trade in order for that not to happen the Proclamation of 1763 was made.
Between 1763 and 1775, there were three ‘Imperial Crises’ which occurred between the British and the American colonists. The conflict that was produced during this period arose through an undefined balance of political and economic power between the two parties. In 1763, Britain had just concluded the French and Indian war and was left with an immense and almost crippling debt of around 140 million pounds sterling (“Turning Point In American History”). In Britain’s eyes, the most effective way to reduce this debt was increased taxes. Unfortunately, the people of England were already massively overtaxed, which meant the last option for the British was to tax the American colonists.
The American Revolution was sparked when Britain made the decision to start taxing the colonists’ without reason. The colonists were threatened which created a plethora of violence. "This protest was a challenge against the Tea Act of 1773, which gave the nearly bankrupt British East India Company a monopoly on tea exports to America
The British government was not looking for the best of the people. They were only thinking about what they wanted; the government was not interested in what the people wanted so they decided to make decisions on their own, which resulted in changes that form the United States today. Because of this, they were justified in rebelling and declaring independence. One reason why the colonists decided to rebel and declare independence was because of taxation.
When they started to tax the colonists this heavily, the Colonists couldn’t do anything because they had no representatives in the British Parliament. The Sugar Act (1764) put a tax on sugar and molasses; the Stamp Act (1765) put a direct tax on all printed materials; and the Tea Act (1773) placed a 3-cents-per-pound tax on tea.
On December 16 1773 the Boston tea party happened. The Boston Tea Party was where British Colonist dumped 45 tons of tea into the Boston Harbor to protest against the British Parliament's Tea Act of 1773. The colonist were unjustified in doing this, the colonist polluted the water that they fish in, they wasted money, and the British didn’t do that much for the colonist to do that. Some may say that the colonist did this because of the Boston Massacre but, that happened 2 years early, if it was really that big of a deal they would of done it sooner.
The British were low on money from the French and Indian war, so Charles Townshend decided place a duty, or tax, on certian goods the colonies imported from Great Britain. Glass, paint, paper, and tea were a few of the taxed items. The colonists were not happy that they were getting taxed without their consent. Sameul Adams helped convince the colonies to start a boycott. Women played a very important part in the boycott.
