People use many different kinds of biomedical interventions in the instance of stomach discomfort, mostly antacids but in some cases H-2 receptor antagonists, and pro-kinetics. There are a few different antacids out there including: Pepto-Bismol, Alka-Seltzer and Tums. The most common H-2 receptor antagonist is Pepcid and pro-kinetics is the least common route to relief. Pepto-Bismol is one of the more common interventions to defeating dyspepsia and is offered as a liquid, caplet and chewable tablet. It’s active ingredient is bismuth subsalicylate and does many things in order to relieve the stomach of pain. In order to reduce inflammation and irritation, bismuth subsalicylate inhibits the secretion of prostaglandin. It also coats secretory glands to slow the fluid secretions that go to the digestive system’s irritated tissues. When using Pepto-Bismol, do not exceed 8 doses in a 24-hour period or 4 doses in a 24-hour period when using Pepto-Bismol Max. There is no need to use this product after pain is relieved. If you are already taking certain carbonic anhydrase inhibitors, and medications for gout, you should avoid using Pepto-Bismol. Also, if administering to children, you should be very cautious as the active ingredient can cause Reye’s syndrome if the child is exposed to the chickenpox virus or vaccine within a few weeks prior to taking Pepto-Bismol. Pepto-Bismol has also been found to react with many blood pressure medications, Botox, and other salicylate containing medications. When taking Pepto-Bismol, you should be sure to follow the dosage instructions on the label. Pepto-Bismol may also darken the tongue.
