Richard Nathaniel Wright was an author, poet, and writer of fiction and nonfiction. He was born in Mississippi on September 4, 1908 to Nathan and Ella Wright. Wright’s father was a sharecropper, who abandoned his family responsibilities when his son was five years old. Wright learned as an early age the struggles of being an African American in the south, “a time when the American South was in its darkest age of racial segregation” (545).
