I Speak for the Colored Women of the South
The speech was delivered at the World’s Congress of Representative Women, held in Chicago 1893 by Anna Julia Cooper. She was a black African-American woman and the speech was created to tell people about the predicament of the African-American women. The White people were the intended audience. At this period the African-American women were being “doubly enslaved” based on sex and shade. It isn’t completely dreary, she tells about the progresses made by African-American in education and economic status, specially the ones who had earned a college degree. There are no biases that helped to create the message of the author. In this speech, Anna Cooper had enlightened on the “heroic struggle against fearful and overwhelming odds” shown by the colored women. Even though 1800s is the period of the reconstruction, African American were not able to keep them up as a citizen of the nation. The numerous attempt of Republican Party for the equal right to the former slaves was deceased as the number of Republican decreased from the congress. As a result, there was a rise of Jim Crow which gives much power to the whites. Colored people were forced to take a laborious job with low wages and be inferior to the whites. Anna has not only spoken for her colored women but also for the colored people. She had explicated that the “nation’s soil is watered with the blood and tears of the colored people of America. Even with destitute, it does not stop them to make “characteristic history and evolved their destiny”. However, it has been their source of strength to fight back for their right. In the second half of Anna’s speech, she had addressed the struggle of colored women to get education and, also to send their young one to the school. Anna Julia Cooper was a daughter of slave mother. When she was enrolling in school, she realized that she was excellent in the study as well as a feminist. After realization, she started supporting education for the colored women and, also educating colored women from middle class family. The determination for higher living and pure thinking has lead colored women to get a higher education and be sophisticate on their respective fields. Both Lucy Cobb Institute and Spelman Seminary are representations of the attempts to prepare southern women and girls for the New Century by using different philosophies created by the founders of each institution. Both institutions differentiated in the types of students that attended as well as the motivations of the students. Race, class, and ideology shaped secondary education, as well as how women saw their responsibilities as "leaders of their race". In Leaders of their Race, written by Sarah H. Case, the idea of race, respectability, and sexuality in Women's Education is thoroughly explored. Although each of the institutions sought out to mold young women to fit the new century, there were many differences in things such as their education.
What was never presented was the point of view from the African Americans because it was seemingly dismissed. It was eye-opening to read about the experience from an African’s perspective because it brought a whole new light to my understanding of what it meant to be a slave and the struggles black Americans face here in the US, even
Sally Hemings was a slave on the Monticello plantation in the late 18th century, and her experience helps us to understand that her gender aided the way she was treated versus if they went by the color of her skin (Dilkes Mullins). {Woman during this era were thought of as property, they were objectified, they were treated poorly and had no choice. Their husbands were liable for anything that they did} [Being a female during this era outweighed what one 's social status was. It did not matter what race you were, but if you were a woman, you were treated as such] (Dilkes Mullins). Ms. Hemings was a beautiful sixteen-year-old enslaved girl (Gordon-Reed, 102) who was more than just a slave on the Monticello plantation.
Mary Mcleod Bethune’s life began in the same circumstances as many colored people during The Era Of Reconstruction. Bethune’s family was no exception to the entrapment that the withholding of civil rights caused. Bethune’s early realization that literacy could be used as a tool to potentially break and end the vicious cycle of degradation that occurred vapidly in her time would result in the founding of an amazing learning institute and years of service towards the cause of civil rights, her message of working for one’s self and compassion is still as powerful today as it was nearly a hundred years ago. In the 18th century, during the years of 1825 to 1850 America was going through Reform movements. The Reform movement sought to expand democratic ideals in the United States. The Reform movement had social, economic and political changes or events in America. Out of all of these three things, the Reform movement had a lot more social changes and events than the other two. As the Reform movement was more of a social movement that aim to make gradual changes in society or at least some parts of society.
One of the most outstanding figures of the Black Feminism, Anna Julia Cooper, fought irresistibly for the black women`s rights. Because of her stance, she was often called “the voice of the South” (Rosser-Mims, 2010). She argued that a black woman “is confronted by both a woman question and a race problem, and is as yet an unknown or an unacknowledged factor in both” (Cooper, 1969). African American women have to struggle with discrimination against their race and, at the same time, they have to fight for recognition in their workplaces where leadership positions are usually occupied by men. Cooper wanted to prove that women can succeed in every spheres of life and should be treated equally with men.
The ratification of the fourteenth and fifteenth amendments paved the way for a great deal of conflict. Before these amendments were passed, slavery was legal, and slaves had absolutely no rights, while women’s rights were very limited. This paved the way for the Civil War, in which both black women, white women, and slaves began a fight for equality, which resulted in two amendments being passed. The fourteenth amendment states that the right to vote cannot be taken away from any male citizen of the United States. They granted rights to all black and white men, but women were not mentioned at all.

II The book describes African Americans in the time period of slavery through civil war and civil rights revolution, to 1980s, after the segregation of the black race. The book mainly focus on the speech done by social activists of different time period. In addition of the reasons and different beliefs of those social activist had. Such as Frederick Douglass, who believe we can’t wait for somebody else to fight freedom for us.
Jacobs decided to write her autobiography “Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl” in order to share the true life of enslaved women, since men wrote most autobiographies. She wanted a woman’s perspective and she thought she was obliged to write it because she was well educated for a black woman during the times of slavery. Her life and other people alike her had their lives greatly affected by Andrew Jackson and his political roles during the late 1920’s to early 1950’s. Jackson’s policies, politics, and societal roles during and after his presidency affected the lives of enslaved women in the United States between 1828 and 1850.
What is the purpose and mission of universal schooling? Why are philanthropic white Northern reformers’ supportive of African-Americans’ goals of literacy and universal education? How can historians reconcile the educational advancement of African-Americans with their status as second-class citizens throughout the Eras of Reconstruction and Jim Crow? In The Education of Blacks in the South (1988), James Anderson explores the race, labor, and education questions through the lens of black educational philosophy. Anderson challenges the prevailing narrative that universal public education emerged from white Northern missionaries dedicated to civilizing newly emancipated Negroes in the South.
The sound of people pleading to be let go, to be free, echoes across the nation. Some have more fight in them and others seem to have already lost hope, watching themselves and their own family be bound by chains. But, there are murmurs of new hope, a chance for freedom. This is the time that Sojourner Truth lived in, back when racism and sexism still had a strong hold in American society. However, like the others fighting for freedom, Truth kept her head up and battled it out no matter how bleak the times may have seemed.
The excerpt I chose to reflect on is called “An End to the Neglect of the Problems of the Negro Woman!” by Claudia Jones (1949). Jones express the concerns that women of color in her time suffer from the neglect and degradation they receive throughout their lives. During this time, the reason many African American women go through the struggles in their community originated from the notion that the “bourgeoisie is fearful of the militancy of the Negro woman” (108). In my opinion, they have every right to be afraid of African American women. As Jones stated nicely "once Negro women undertake action, the militancy of the whole Negro people, and thus of the anti-imperialist coalition, is greatly enhanced" (108).
IDA B. WELLS "This Awful Slaughter" In 1909 Ida B. Wells delivered the above mentioned speech at the NAACP’s first annual conference held in Atlanta, Georgia. The speech was and still is, deeply touching. Moreover, mere words alone are a far cry from living through the horrendous cruelty being played out on a daily basis.
Anna Arnold Hedgeman’s legacy has served as a platform for many African-American women battling the obstacles of sexism, racism, and diverse forms of oppression. She resisted the social calamities common to Blacks nearing the end of the formal period of Reconstruction and endured the torments of Jim Crow. Hedgeman’s resistance to the social and racial persecution manifested in her protesting against the system that worked against the people of color. She used her education along with her influence to end the maltreatment of Blacks. According to the American National Biography Online, Hedgeman became the executive secretary of the National Council for a Permanent Fair Employment Practice Committee (FEPC).
