Throughout the book I found that the pages couldn’t flip quickly enough. One of my favorite passages was in Chapter Six, Take Control of Your Personal Destiny. In this chapter there is a page written on deferred gratification. It goes in depth on a study where children ages of 4 to 6 were placed in a room free of distraction, and given a marshmallow. They were told that they may eat the marshmallow, but if they waited for 15 minutes without consuming it, they would receive a second marshmallow. Results showed that the most of the younger children were quick to eat the marshmallow, while one third of the group (mostly older children) had the will to wait for a second marshmallow. Follow ups with the children helped show that the children who were able to wait for the second marshmallow would be more successful on average. The results showed that the patient children also were usually able to achieve higher SAT scores than their counterparts. I love this passage because it motivates me to not cave to the temptations of temporary satisfaction, in order to not lose the attainment of the ultimate
If they had eaten it they would not get a second marshmallow. The test showed that a large percentage of the kids who ate the marshmallow did not succeed in their hero’s journey. Also a large percentage of the kids who did not eat the marshmallow succeeded in their hero’s journey. My personal opinion on this is that
In “Is the NBA Draft Looking at a Talent Drought in 2019? The Early Returns Aren’t Good” by Jeremy Woo, the author describes predictions made about the 2019 NBA draft class. The group does not contain much spectacular talent, which is causing draft scouts to think the class is inauspicious. Woo outlines the class’s talent problem by describing the skill of the players, the competition at big events, and the opinion of NBA scouts. The 2019 draft class does not have many stars that separate themselves from the others.

With speeches and books, Cohn has also developed “personal evaluation sheets” for players to fill out and work towards understanding their mental process after success and failure. Through the worksheets, it is commonly found that players who are more demanding on themselves after a failure tend not to be as excited when success happens. Giving the thought process of “expectation instead of success.” When a player is so wrapped up in failure, the thought process of what success looks like can diminish. Giving the player no true satisfaction with success but the feeling that they met what is
The movie Hoop Dreams traced a poor young talented African American, named Arthur Agee from grade eight to college. Arthur hoped to play professional basketball in the future to help his family to escape poverty. Despite the fact that his family is poor, and the neighborhood he lived in, were disadvantaged to him to pursue his goal in many ways. Journalist David Epstein takes down the self congratulatory attitude behind goal shattering success in high level sport. He explores all the ways that athletes have improved over the past decades in his ted talk by using comparison, logos and pathos, and significant figures. Technology in sport has come along way from new track surfaces to lighter materials in rowing shells. This progress aids athletes in living up to the olympic motto: “faster, higher, stronger” (Epstein, 2014, 0:12). To produce this topic, Epstein uses pathos to capture the minds of the audience with an intriguing example he uses that incorporates sound at 00:51 in his Ted Talk.
Summary “Children Need to Play, Not Compete,” by Jessica Statsky is a thoughtful insight on the competitive sports for children. She is of the view that the competitive sports can ruin the enjoyment that games are supposed to provide. These methods of playing the games like adults can prove to be lethal for physical and psychological health. The author quotes from an authentic source that “Kids under the age of fourteen are not by nature physical.” (Tutko)

In Neal Shusterman's Unwind, unwinding a child is almost thought of as normal. Unwinding a child is taking the body parts off of a unwanted, troubled, or dead teenagers body and transplanting them to somebody that needs the body parts. The individuals that receive the body parts are known as the " unwinds. " People believe that unwinding a child is not murder because the transplanted body parts live on in the unwinds life. Unwinding children first started right after the Heartland War.
Nobel Prize winning economist, F.A. Hayek, in his book The Road to Serfdom, published in 1944 addresses the topic of the rise of socialism in the West, and argues that it must be stopped to keep the United States, United Kingdom, and other Western democracies from ending up like Nazi Germany. Hayek argues that many of the same developments and thought processes that opened the door for totalitarian socialism, be it “Right” National Socialism or fascism in Germany and Italy, or “Left” Stalinist communism in the Soviet Union can be seen in the West, but they are developing much slower and can still be reversed. He says that desire for economic collectivism, has risen in the West but its effects can be seen in these centralized totalitarian
They gobbled down the marshmallow immediately. The rest struggled hard to resist eating it. They covered their eyes, talked to themselves, sang, played games, even tried to go to sleep. The preschoolers who were able to wait were rewarded with two marshmallows when the researcher returned.

Have you wondered why many athletes who deal with serious problems, seem to succeed? Their success is mostly the result of a the sport psychologist, who is working with them to improve their mental state. Sport psychologists take a caring approach on personal and public matters. Studies have shown the various outcomes of using a sport psychologist, in many different sports. This is why there is usually a person behind the athlete in any sport, whether it is a sport psychologist and or a role model.
You feel relaxed when you're with your friends, and when you're doing something that you enjoy doing. However, one side reasons why sports bring many together and connect is maybe they might want the same goal at the end to win a event or make a meaningful memory with others. By participating in a sport, or multiple sports, it can have a positive impact on one’s
A study shows that “The exercise programs may actually enhance the development of specific types of mental processing known to be important, for meeting challenges encountered both in academics and later in life.” Also, the athletes are improved since high school.
