Symbolism Animal Farm

In the novel, “Animal Farm”, by George Orwell, a Berkshire Boar named Napoleon is very mischievous, cruel and manipulative when he takes control of the farm that the animals had previously freed from its former ruler farmer Jones. This allegory, is symbolic of the 1917 Russian Revolution and often alludes to many Communist ideals or figures from this event. One such example is the representation of the Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin as Napoleon. Another is the flag that the animals find depicting a horn and a hoof, much like the Soviet hammer and sickle. The events in the novel and particularly those involving Napoleon are very reminiscent of the events in Russian history. For example, on page twenty-two the text states, “they were just getting their clutches ready for the spring sitting and they protested that to take the eggs now would be murder...Napoleon acted swiftly and ruthlessly. He ordered the hen’s rations to be stopped, and decreed that any animal giving so much as a grain of corn to a hen would be punished by death.” This shows that Napoleon does not care about the needs or wants of others, he only cares about himself. This also shows that Napoleon will always try to get his own way by any means necessary, including extreme violence. In addition, according to page twenty-six, “without any further prompting they confessed that they had been secretly in touch with Snowball ever since his expulsion, that they had collaborated with him in destroying the windmill, and that they had entered an agreement with him to hand over the Animal Farm to Mr. Fredereck. When they had finished their confession, the dogs promptly tore their throats out.” This shows that Napoleon is merciless and unforgiving and will not tolerate insubordinates. This also shows that he will do anything to maintain his control by wiping out all threats to himself.
