Through this essay I hope to achieve a well-structured essay explaining the ways that fire is symbolized in the novel Fahrenheit 451. Montag, who starts off as a follower, ends the story as an independent thinking and capable to make his own decisions on what’s best for him. All the while, fire follows him everywhere throughout the story. At a first glance it is clear that fire is symbolic due to Guy Montag being a fireman and therefore taking part in burning the books, but throughout the story fire evolves by gaining different meanings to him. Knowing this, I would like to explore the idea of fire originally being represented as destruction, then as a symbol of security and most importantly the concept of fire, or in this case the phoenix,
Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury, is about a fireman named Guy Montag. In the story firemen burn books, and after one job, Montag starts to realize what he is doing is wrong. When he is caught with a book he is hunted down by his boss, coworkers, and the police and ends up setting with a group of book enthusiasts. Montag’s understanding of fire changes from fire being the destroyer of books and evil to fire being the destroyer of books and knowledge.
Do you know someone who is a fireman? Well, in the book Fahrenheit 451 the main character, Montag, is a fireman, but his job is a little different. Instead of putting fires out he starts them. If you have a book, then an alarm will go off and firemen will come and burn them. In the beginning he doesn't think about his job.
The books are planted into the fireman’s fire house and then they are later found and caught. In fahrenheit 451 they make so the so called “Firefighters” the people who start the fires instead of stopping them which can make the story twist and turn very easily. If you have ever had something happen where it seems like everything is falling apart; that fails in comparison to what happens to Montag in the book, Fahrenheit 451. Written by Ray Bradbury, Fahrenheit 451 is about a dystopian society where being social and thinking is considered weird and reading is out of the question by penalty of death by the “firemen”. In the novel, a “fireman” named Montag’s whole life began to fall apart as he realized his perfect life wasn’t as perfect as he thought it was, starting when he met his new neighbor, Clarisse, who opened his eyes to the lies and made him see how people act. After many years, Montag begins to uncover the lies of the firemen he was previously oblivious to.

How would life be if books were illegal to the people? Unlike firefighters today, the firemen in Fahrenheit 451 used fire to burn books and the homes that held them. They didn’t put out fires, they started them. If someone were to get caught with books, like Montag did, they could be arrested or even killed. In his novel Lord of the Flies, William Golding uses symbols to help readers track the loss of civility of the boys. The fire is both a symbol of hope and the reckless behavior of the boys.
The reason the United States exists today started from the Revolutionary War in the 1700s; America rebelled against the British because of their abusive and tyrant government. The book, Catching Fire, by Suzanne Collins, is a sequel to the Hunger Games. It takes place in a fictional world where every year, two tributes from each District, 12 total, are chosen to fight to the death for entertainment purposes. Suzanne Collins uses her writing in Catching Fire to show how the literary terms, symbolism and a protagonist depicting the rebellions against the Capitol, represent how people who abuse their power never end well. Moreover the fire also resembles the purging of Montag. Montag’ burning of his house and the TV signifies his rebellion and rejection of the vales of his society. Through burning his own house Montag like a phoenix destroys his old self by fire to be reborn from the ashes as a new person once again. Killing captain Beatty symbolizes the destruction of the system, because by doing so he frees himself from the influence of his society which give him the chance to think and choose freely for first time in his life. Also, another side of fire is also revealed to Montag ay the end of the novel when he meets the rebel group.
Fahrenheit 451 Essay In our society Firemen are supposed to be heroic and put out fires. That was not what being a fireman meant for Montag. In the novel Fahrenheit 451 for Montag being a firefighter possessed a level of respect and confidence, that was hard to earn for the average person. The numbers 451 symbolize the burning of books and the law that forbids books.
