In the novel the outsiders, S.E. Hinton does a great job bringing more readers to the young adult fiction genre. It was the reason she captured the reader that keeps it popular among middle schoolers everywhere. Her revealing acts is why it is a staple for schools and readers throughout the decades. S.E. Hinton does a great job showing revealing acts through the church fire. Johnny, Ponyboy, and Dallas all risk their lives to save people, that alone shows that those three are very courageous and caring, despite being greasers. “I jerked loose and ran on. All I could think was: We started it. We started it. We started it!” (91). That thought shows that Ponyboy didn’t care about the fact that he could get killed, he just wanted to save the children. …show more content…
When Darry really cares about Ponyboy because he was worried when he didn’t know where he was late at night. Johnny killing Bob shows that he really cares about Ponyboy because he killed Bob when him and his friends were threatening to kill Ponyboy. “‘Yeah.” His voice quavered slightly. “I had to. They were drowning you, Pony. They might have killed you.And they had a blade… they were gonna beat me up…’”(59). That proves just how much Ponyboy means to Johnny, he killed someone to make sure Ponyboy could live. “‘So I guess you got into some trouble, huh? Darry and me nearly went nuts when you ran out like that. Darry is awfully sorry he hit you. You know he didn mean it.’”(81). That note proves that Darry cares about Ponyboy, and even though he might do something he shouldn’t, at the end of the day he loves, and cares about him. Just those two examples alone show how well Hinton is able to reveal a part of the characters the readers didn’t know …show more content…
Randy pulled Ponyboy aside to just have a talk about why he chose to save the children, Cherry talks to Ponyboy about visiting Johnny in the hospital. “‘I’m sick of it because it doesn’t do any good. You can’t win, you know that, don’t you?’”(117). That alone shows that Randy doesn’t think that fighting will do any good, he seems like the person who hates Greasers, but he actually just wants to be a normal person. “‘I wasn’t trying to give you charity, Ponyboy. I only wanted to help. I liked you from the start… the way you talked.’”(129). Cherry saying that she only wanted to help shows that she truly likes Ponyboy and Johnny, despite what happened in the park. Ponyboy has another revealing act that night when he say “I would. I’d help her and Randy both, if I could.”(129). That proves that just because all Greasers act like they hate all Socs, they can actually like them. “You can see good it from the East Side, too.” That helps show that both groups, Socs and Greasers, have a lot more in common than they think. Those all show that Socs and Greasers aren’t all that different, in the way that they both have feelings, and Socs aren’t just rich kids and Greasers aren’t just poor, tough
Two quotes that support this is “I fought, but the hand at the back of my neck was strong and I had to hold my breath. I’m dying I thought.”. This piece of evidence reveals how much Johnny cares about Pony. The other quote is “I didn’t what to do Pony. They were going to drown you.”.
They support their friends who are going through hard times even if they are going through hard times themselves. Ponyboy lived up to this belief by sticking with Johnny even after he killed Bob, and by fighting in the rumble while in a weak state to fight for his friends. First, when Johnny killed Bob, there wasn’t a hesitant thought in Ponyboy’s head when Dally advised them to run away. Ponyboy knew the magnitude of the murder and even though he didn’t commit it, he went into hiding with Johnny.
I killed that boy.” This shows that Johnny was being honorable because after the Socs get rid of Ponyboy, they might go after Johnny. He had to kill Bob to protect himself and Ponyboy.
While Ponyboy and Johnny were in the church, Ponyboy told Johnny about a poem he knew. The poem told about how great life can be in the beginning, and how in can crash in a blink. In Johnny’s letter, he told Ponyboy that bad times will come, so he shouldn’t stress over him dying. He told him it was worth it, when he saved all those kids.
Hinton shows Ponyboy’s denial from Johnny doing anything wrong, and how Pony also denies Johnnys death at all. This shows most when Randy has an encounter with Pony short after Johnnys death. As Randy restates Johnny was the one with the knife, Pony says “I had the knife. I killed Bob” (Hinton 165). By attempting to pretend that Johnny is still alive and Johnny never killed anyone, it causes him to live in hatred of the people he blames (the Socs) and himself rather than to believe the truth.
Not all of us are like that.” (pg. 34) When Cherry says this, it is clear she wants Ponyboy to understand the good in the world, and that not all Socs are bad people. Likewise, at the end of the book a Soc called Randy comes to speak to Ponyboy about going to court. “‘There's a guy her to see you...his name's Randy.’”
The book has many themes such as the gap between the rich and poor, honour among the lawless and the retention of innocence. To society, The Greasers were looked down on, yet they we honourable and looked after one another and stood together when it came to their enemies. Their loyalty and devotion to each other in the gang was admirable because society would not have expected them as Greasers to have these quality traits. They took the blame for crimes they did not commit to save their friends and risked their lives to save children from burning to death in a fire in a
they were gonna beat me up…” (pg.57). (X)This shows how Johnny would have the risk of being attacked by the Socs as well. If Bob killed Ponyboy, who knows what Johnny would have done. He could have killed Bob afterwards, or gotten killed.
Ponyboy’s vs the Socs The fiction book the,”The Outsiders,” by S.E. Hilton tells the reader about the ongoing fighting between the west side and the east side in Tulsa Oklahoma in 1965. Hilton writes about a young greaser or east sider and his family fight against the Socs or West siders. In the novel you see ponyboy’s view of the Socs and how it evolves from the beginning of the book to the end.
In page 56 it states “ I’m drowning, I thought, they’ve gone too far …” and “ I killed him,” he said slowly. “I killed that boy.” This shows where Johnny saved Ponyboy from drowning. Johnny is also a hero when he helped get the little kids get out of the church that was on fire. In the text it states “ He looked over his shoulder and saw that the door was blocked by the flames, then pushed open the window and tossed out the nearest kid.”
Johnny made this spontaneous decision because the Socs were trying to drown Ponyboy in the park’s fountain. When Ponyboy realized Johnny murdered Bob, Ponyboy was as frightened as if he was at a haunted house . The consequence of this choice was that Johnny and Ponyboy felt guilty ,and they Both decided to run away for a like one million years. Johnny said, “I killed him. I killed that boy (pg56).”
He also says that he shouldn’t “…be so bugged over being a greaser. You still have a lot of time to make yourself be what you want.” Johnny is refereeing to how Ponyboy has a bright future and he can make with his life whatever he pleases. Pony finally understood what Johnny meant when he said, “stay gold, Ponyboy. Stay gold…”
He could take anything. It was Johnny I was worried about.” He knows how frightened and anxious Johnny is after being jumped and how he is not as tough as the rest of the Greasers. Especially without a loving family at home, Johnny only has the gang and is not able to take as much. Throughout the whole novel, Ponyboy expresses how much he cares for others both with Johnny, and
Consequently with all that was going on at that moment, Johnny defended himself and Ponyboy who is one of the Greasers. Furthermore, Ponyboy responds saying, “‘You really killed him, huh, Johnny? ‘Yeah.’ His voice quivered slightly. ‘I had to.
In the book “The Outsiders” even though Johnny had died Ponyboy had still stayed loyal. When Pony was in court he was taking the blame for killing the Soc even though he knew that Johnny had killed him. He was staying loyal to his gang because his gang really liked Johnny and didn’t think he deserved what he got. Pony said “I half convinced myself that I had dreamed everything that happened the night before” This shows that he is having trouble coping with everything that is happening with Johnny and he wants to keep him safe. Additionally Johnny said “I had to they were drowning you Ponyboy.
