Similar to other dystopian novels such as George Orwell’s 1984, Ayn Rand’s Anthem paints a grim picture of a collectivist world fraught with terror and oppression. Yet Rand’s vision stands in stark contrast to those that shape most portrayals of dystopias that boast technological and scientific prowess. Technology in 1984 is sophisticated and used to enforce thought control over the masses. This chronology is reversed in Anthem, where prohibition of free thinking creates a medieval, technologically backward society. Inversely, independent thought and action set the conditions for scientific and technological development, ultimately revealing the nature of science. The Councils implement two measures to deter citizens from thinking independently …show more content…
Having become free to pursue his studies, Equality quickly advances from ignorance to enlightenment. “[I]n . . . two years, [he] . . . learns more than he had learned in the ten years of the Home of the Students” (36). The years of intellectual toil come to fruition at Equality’s rediscovery of the lightbulb, marking a technological watershed in a society where technology is limited to candles and glass windowpanes. It is by virtue of his indomitable freedom of thought that Equality is able to retain his unflagging curiosity and make strides in his quest for knowledge. Society’s condemnation of independent thinking is not the only chain that shackles the mind and inhibits scientific progress—so is the individual’s will. Despite the Councils’ powerful thought control, citizens are never forced into subservience. They are not deprived, blackmailed, or drugged. Nor are their hands tied up by law enforcement. There are not even guards patrolling the streets, since “men have never defied the Councils so far as to escape from whatever place they were ordered to be” (67). Furthermore, individuals can still, albeit with difficulty, think independently because it is impossible to entirely suppress one’s
In Anthem by Ayn Rand International 4-8818 agrees to keep Equality 7-2521’s secret of the tunnel under the ground because much like Equality 7-2521, International 4-8818 is different than the rest of the people in the place they live in. This is because while Equality 7-2521 explains how he found the hole that led to the tunnel he talks about International 4-8818 and explains that, “they are a tall, strong youth and their eyes are like fireflies, for there is laughter in their eyes. We cannot look upon International 4-8818 and not smile in answer. For this they were not liked in the Home of the Students, as it is not proper to smile without reason. And also they were not liked because they took pieces of coal and they drew pictures upon the
In the book Anthem their society is way different from ours. They are not allowed to be individual or say the word “I”. They can’t have names, instead they are in groups and have group names. They all have a part in society like their jobs and things they do. For example the equality group belong to the street sweepers.
Laws and rules are crafted to prevent advancement and preserve elentless uniformity under the guise of moral righteousness. Here we find Equality 7-2521 on the path to self-discovery, struggling to understand the internal conflict he faces—his desire to learn and create against government indoctrination to force stagnation and conformity. Equality possesses gifts despised by the government: intellectual and psychological strength. He aspires to work at the Home of Scholars, where there is some perceived semblance of education and discovery (9).
In the case of Ayn Rand’s Anthem, it is the fear of collectivism and no sense of individuality. All three author’s prediction of the future are somewhat true in each and every way, but not to the extremes of the books’ depictions. Nonetheless, it is important to be wary of the possible threats that could create a dystopian society, and to continue to express the freedoms that are currently in
What exactly inspires people to create great things? Because they are doing it for their own benefit. In the novella written by Ayn Rand titled, Anthem, Equality 7-2521 is motivated to experiment and discover, but not because he is intending to assist his brothers and all of the population. Equality, although he had hoped to join the Home of the Scholars, works as a street sweeper trapped in a collectivist society where all of forms of individuality are banned. At the beginning of the story, Equality discovers a secret, underground tunnel where he slowly starts to discover technologies from the unmentionable times.
In “Anthem”, by Ayn Rand, Equality 7-2521 is completely unaware that the Council he trusts is actually plotting against him to maintain control of the society, but comes to realize the truth about his society as he questions its morals and eventually runs away to make his own path. This leads to his ultimate realization that his society is completely and totally evil. He weeps when he discovers the word “I”. He had been searching for a word that could suffice for that meaning, but never found it until he ran away from the society to discovery it. The society in Anthem was morally wrong for a handful of reasons.
Judging the morals in life regarding different societies expectations quickly became the focus of Equality’s thoughts, exactly as Ayn Rand had made it the importance of her own efforts. Objectivism is different from what many people live by, but it worked for Equality by the end of Anthem. It is important to realize everybody needs different things, which leads to thinking diversely. Some need self-respect to be able to give respect, and others live their life following instead of leading. It is impossible however, to say objectivism needs to vanish when it never has before, more so, the world would be unbalanced with only equal thoughts from all; there would be no innovation if all thoughts were for the same narrow concept.
Anthem (by Ayn Rand) is a satire written in first person diary form. It's in a futuristic dystopia near the mountains. There is no individualism whatsoever. You can't show any preference towards anything or anyone. Your world is white.
Collectivism and Selfishness in Anthem Imagine living in a world where everybody's lives are completely mapped out by the government. Where every decision is made without the input of the citizens it affects. In the novella Anthem, Ayn Rand depicts a completely collectivist society, where every idea, action, and invention is purely for the benefit of society as a whole. Everything is done with the entire population in mind, and individuality is extremely frowned upon.
What do you think nature is and how can it contribute to society, and how people feel about it? So far -in the book Anthem- I’ve wondered about this question. In this book there are many ways that nature can make people feel. Also, there’s this character -Equality 7-2521- that at one point got exiled from society and ran to the forest.
This mirrors miracle, mystery, and authority because both concepts are presented as ways to restrict individual freedom, and as reasons for why this freedom must be restricted. Just as the Grand Inquisitor claims that the masses are unable to bear the burden of freedom, Schmitt argues that society cannot decide for itself who the common enemy is and when to engage it. The political
In the 1984 society , people are purposely left to feel alone to make them fear getting caught by the Party. Although many people commit thoughtcrime, they will remain silent because they know the consequences of engaging in rebellion. This constant source of fear holds the community together and manipulates people’s thought processes. The government often leaves the people
Victory Over Collectivism “I”, one of the only one-letter words in the English language. Yet its power and meaning do not match its quantitative value. In the collectivist dictatorship found the in the novel Anthem by Ayn Rand, this word has disappeared and consequently, society has fallen into a dark age, all because of the loss of a single-lettered word. However, the hero of this time, Equality 7-2521, breaks down the barrier of the collectivist society and allows him to make advances that show him the power of the word “I” and the idea of individualism in government and in society. Although the word “I” has vanished from society, Equality is able to free himself from the collectivist government through the use of science and free thought,
Naomi In today’s generation, we have learned about collectivism in history classes. In the Holocaust the majority of the people didn’t have a say about anything. In today's generation, we have individualism in our society today. Everyone has the right to make their own choices, such as, if one wants an education or not.
The World Controller says that “science is dangerous; we have to keep it most carefully chained and muzzled” (Huxley 225). Science prompts discovery and creativity, but the World State only wants to use control for pacification and
