Think about how it would feel to lose a very close family member or a close friend. Thousands of people don’t have to think about how it feels because they feel that way almost every day. In the world, over 100,000 people die a day from diseases, cancer, accidents, suicide, and so much more. The third leading cause of death in the world is accidents. That includes work accidents, family accidents, friendly accidents, and car accidents. There are so many different ways people can get involved in car accidents such as speeding, running red lights, drunk driving, weather, flat tires, distracted driving and other ways. The number one leading cause of accidents is distracted which includes putting on make-up, eating, texting, looking for something, all while …show more content…
I am going to focus specifically on texting while driving. When one is driving, they are not supposed to put their focus on anything else other than the road. We are all taught this when we learn to drive; however, not everyone abides by every rule. Texting and driving is something people my age don't take seriously, until we witness it first-hand. After doing research for my persuasive speech, I found that 20% of people between the age of 18-21 claim that texting doesn't affect their driving, and 30% of people between the age of 22-30 claim that texting has no impact (Distracted Driving Research 2012). I know I am a part of the 20% because I still text and drive, and I believe it does not affect my driving. I changed my topic from suicide to texting and driving because I feel like the more research I do, the more I will convince myself that I shouldn't text a drive. I also believe that if I do more research, then persuading someone to not text and drive will be easier because I will have facts that would help prove
Relating to articles, “ The Science Behind Distracted Driving.” Perfect information for evidence. The new power point i’d like to knock out would be, facts have proven multiple times that the phrase, “ Out of sight, out of mind” helps to prevent the dangers of texting while in a car that is active. Even passengers should be aware not to use their phones.
More than 3,000 teens die each year in Canada in crashes caused by texting while driving In 2012 driver distraction was the cause of 18 percent of all fatal crashes Text messaging creates a crash risk 23 times worse than driving while not distracted. the statistics above are from: http://distracteddriving.caa.ca/education/
Discouraging Distracted Driving A couple months ago my roommates and a couple friends were enjoying a sporting event that was being broadcasted on the television. During one of the commercial breaks we were socializing with each other and all of a sudden each of us, one by one became quite because of a commercial that was airing. The word “yeah” flashed across the screen and then a young woman with tears streaming down here face said, “these were the last words my sister read before she died”. Her sister had been driving while reading a text message that was four simple letters, “yeah”.
In addition, despite laws in place to restrict the use of technology, such as cell phones, while driving has not offered enough of a deterrent to stop this activity according to the Highway Loss Data Institute and the number of insurance collision claims. Even though adolescents are capable of fully understanding the risks involved in texting while driving, it doesn’t seem to be enough for them to stop engaging in this risky activity. Research has suggested another approach that seems to be more effective than ones tried in the past. Adolescents seem to respond more effectively with statistics shared that reflect the majority of their group not participating in risky behavior. In other words, opposed to focusing on the percentage of teens that engage in texting and talking on the phone while driving, there is a more positive response to campaigns focusing on the majority of adolescents that don’t participate in these activities.
A distracted driver would travel the length of a football field when driving sixty miles per hour (Hollister, 2013). The length and amount of time could cause a horrific accident. Traffic safety researchers at Virginia Tech also recognized that those who participate in the act of texting and driving will be twenty-three times more likely to crash (Johnson, 2012). Everyone can see the evidence that distracted driving exists, specifically texting and driving. The people need to recognize it.
What I found to be the most interesting from the reading that most of all car crashes are caused by distracted driving. Most distracted driving accidents are caused by teenagers or people who barley started driving. Distracted driving is caused when either the person who is operating the vehicle is paying attention to something that is going on inside the car or they are taking their attention to an object outside of the vehicle and not paying attention to the road. Over 5,000 distracted driving cases happen each year in the state of Utah. Nearly 3,000 of those cases result in injured persons and 28 result in death.
The laws against texting while driving for those 21 and younger are completely valid; however, these same laws are completely valid for those of us over the age of 21, if not more so. As teen mentors, we must serve as examples for our kids. One of those pertinent examples is showing that we are not addicted to our cell phones. When I took a group of kids to a presentation held by one of the survivors of the tragedy at Columbine High School in Littleton, CO, I insisted that my kids turn OFF their phones.

Text messaging has been around for more than a dozen years, yet laws against it have had little impact, according to a study by the Highway Loss Data Institute, an insurance industry-funded research group. Highway Loss Data Institute compared crash rates in four states that prohibit texting to states that texting and driving were granted. It found no decline in states where it is banned. Consequently, teens are the majority of drivers that text and drive. A study by mobile technology firm Vingo discovered that 66% of drivers aged 16 to 19 texted while driving.
Distracted driving is extremely common in youth. Kids do not understand the dangers of distracted driving. That is why I believe we should have an app on our phones, that when you get into a car the phone powers down. The risk of dying is not worth one text. Yet kids in today's world do not see the risks or possibilities that can come out of it.
Though laws have helped prevent cell phone use while operating a vehicle, cell phones still have only greatened the number of distracted driving accidents. Susan Henneberg is an author who focuses on writing about common issues in society. After hearing of a fatal distracted driving accident, she wrote of the accident, “The impact [of the crash] spun their car sideways into Shaw’s lane, and the trailing pickup truck plowed into the side of the Saturn, killing both men instantly”(Henneberg). Both of these drivers were physically hurt all because of texting and driving.
