My topic covers Information Governance. I have researched several articles in Journals through online sources. I have also utilized the AHIMA website to gain additional knowledge on healthcare information governance. Information governance focuses on more than just software and hardware. Information governance focuses on the organizations policies and procedures from beginning to end. This includes creating, managing and following patient data. The American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) defines information governance as “an organization wide framework for managing information throughout its lifecycle and for supporting the organization’s strategy, operations, regulatory, legal, risk, and environmental requirements.” In today’s healthcare system, it is more important than ever to know and understand how healthcare information is created, transferred and used. Due to the development of systems such as electronic health records and clinical decision support systems it is important that health information maintains its reliability and validity throughout its …show more content…
HIM professionals are well versed in laws and regulations regarding retention/destruction laws, privacy and security laws and regulations, reimbursement regulations, risk management and litigation/eDiscovery processes. According to Warner, D. (2013, December 20), “the core HIM professional domains of knowledge provide clear value-added subject matter expertise with respect to information governance program development and oversight.” The HIM professional can evaluate the organization's current policies and procedures and determine where there is an additional need for information governance. It is important to include HIM professionals when considering information governance as they can provide guidance and insight to problem areas within the
Throughout the past decades, many acts have been passed in support of health information technology and the adaptation of such technology. Two of those acts, the HIPAA (health insurance portability and accountability) Act and the HITECH (Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health) Act, focus on protecting patient health information and utilizing health information technology. Although these acts bring about many positive changes within the healthcare industry, there are some downsides regarding the implementation of these acts, as there are with many acts that are passed. Both of these acts provide security to patient health information, however, the HITECH Act contributes more to the utilization of the electronic health
The development of the United States health care delivery system has significantly enhanced the methods of advanced medical technology, information management, and patient care for all health care professionals and society. Moreover, the United States health care delivery system is a unique system with many organizations and individuals that are involved in the delivery cycle. Health Care delivery organizations such as American Health Information Management Association is an established organization that supports and direct the needs of its health care professionals and patients. Organizational Selection and Background October 1928, Ms. Grace Whitney Myers and the American College of Surgeons created the Association of Record Librarians of North America (ARLNA) which later became known as American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).
Other than HIPAA, Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act is a major federal policy initiative that affects the healthcare information technology (HIT) in the past years. However, its policy is used to protect the EHR system from a security breach that can cause multi-million dollar fines to the company (Campus Safety Magazine, 2010). In 2009, President Obama signed HITECH Act as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to support the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) with authority, so it can establish programs that will improve healthcare quality, safety, and efficiency using HIT (Hebda & Czar, 2013). Certainly, HITECH is one of the significant health care reforms that have a major
When your little you might know what your destined to be or you might not be focused on it. Than when the day comes to start the schooling you hesitate. Looking up ideas of careers becomes repetitive and annoying. Than you get a job doing whatever you could find until one day you realize that you deserve more and want to challenge yourself. For me it wasn’t easy deciding what to do.
The purpose of the article, "HHS issues funding opportunity for Information Sharing and Analysis Organization for health and public health sector, (HHS.gov," 2016), addressed cyber security issues. The Office of the National Coordinator (ONC) and Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response (ASPR), leveraged the existing Information Sharing and Analysis Organization (ISAO) capabilities by providing cyber security training to Healthcare and Public Health (HPH) specific to the types of cyber threats in their sector. (HHS, 2016). To expand outreach and educational activities that ensure Cybersecurity Preparedness is available to both HPH sectors. As well as, equip stakeholders to take action in response to the cyber threat, by facilitating
Role of Data Governance in Healthcare Indstry In Analytics, Data governance is meant for providing guiding principal and context specific policies to frame the process and procedure for data management. Data Governance is connected to each sphere of Analytics, be it descriptive analytics, where a company can know the past and current status of business, or predictive analytics; determining the factors affecting the future in business. Predictive analytics can play a very integral role in determining the best course of action for future scenarios. From my perspective, data governance is just another word for well-managed and well-governed data. Although the need for data governance has never been greater, initiatives in many organizations have
The healthcare industry is one of the worlds largest and fastest growing industries. It accounts for approximately 18.3% of the United States Gross Domestic Product according to the National Health Expenditure Accounts [NHEA] (US Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, 2022) . It is to be expected that the industry continues to expand, and that it’s stakeholders: patients, payers, providers, and policymakers have evolved to meet the healthcare needs of a dynamic public. As the healthcare industry grows and evolves, new healthcare roles have emerged, and existing healthcare roles have changed to meet the demands of the nations evolving healthcare system. Healthcare Information Technologists play a critical role in healthcare policy today, in part due to provisions in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA), the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and the expansion of electronic health record keeping.
One area that I think summarize overall roles that were presented to us by each member was Data Integrity. Data integrity was presented to us by Christine who is the supervisor for Data Integrity. Christine explained to us that data integrity is a unique skill set of the HIM professional is increasingly recognized and required after in today’s electronic healthcare environment. She helped me understand data integrity by which HIE must develop policies to ensure high levels of data integrity, including data content standards and definitions to promote submission of quality data for which the HIE and participating organizations are responsible. Which are maintenance of health data through data analyst, coding, release of health information etc.
However, interoperability within the context of healthcare is yet to be realized. Thus, the lack of interoperability amongst healthcare systems further strengthens the information silos that exist in today’s paper-based medical files, which results in proprietary control over health information. This has resulted in increased healthcare cost, declining quality of patients care, and the inability to integrate patients’ information across healthcare
Organizations want to provide a mechanism for sharing patient’s health-related information. Their goals are to secure, protect the information confidentially among the patients and stakeholders. Health Information Systems apprehend houses, manages or even transfers information that pertains to ones’ health and the activities of a hospital or other organization which deals with health divisions. HIS also incorporates the system of laboratory info system, the hospital itself, the patients, administration, human resource management and any resources that helps the entire hospital to function in ways that it processes information, collects and reports out health information to help generate policy and health results.

Perspectives in Health Information Management / AHIMA, American Health Information Management Association, 1, 7. This article sets out to prove the following information, along with the authors skill set as an RHIA gives her in-depth knowledge of what the health information management (HIM) professions expanding role will be in the future.
The use of electronic health records and the constant change in the health care delivery system has forced the professionals in that department to work extra hard and smarter. Generally we all know that too much work leads to stress and as much as we try without rest our brain and body can’t do anything. In everything we do working harder and smarter is the key to any job and for the good job to be done well, health information managers and directors have to assist all departmental members. And by doing so, leaders have to practice the organizational theory that will help them in solving the problems where necessary.
