The Democracy of Athens
Athens was, in the ideals of the time it was prevailing, a democracy. Run by a government occupied with elected officials, and a judge/jury system to maintain the peace. It existed during the third century A.D and onward, producing philosophers akin Aristotle and Plato, who went on to influence the idea of democracy in concurrent civilization.
The definition of democracy is, as taken from Encyclopedia Britannica, literally, rule by the people. Such a term is derived from the Greek dēmokratiā, which was coined from dēmos (“people”) and Kratos (“rule”) in the middle of the 5th century BC to denote the political systems then existing in some Greek city-states, notably Athens. (Cite, Encyclopedia Britannica.) An idea founded in the time of the Greeks.

Nevertheless the wealthy are able to influence elections in modern times, and the working class often times aren’t able to vote.
At the beginning, Socrates, an Athenian philosopher, surmised that asking questions would give one a broader perspective on life. He also established the basis foundation for democracy to flourish on. Despite the fact that he was executed for speaking freely, his student Plato continued to spread the basics of the Socratic method, though altering it slightly. Furthermore, the Athenian idea of democracy was a simple one, the people ran the government, because they would have no interest in gaining power for themselves singularly. Throughout the years we have metamorphosed the idea of democracy into what we have today. “A government of the people, by the people, for the people.”- Abraham Lincoln, Gettysburg
Was ancient Athens truly democratic? Democracy is a system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state. I do not believe that in the 4th to 5th century BCE ancient Athen were democratic for many reasons.
Only the men truly had a say, and ran ancient Athens. Some people believe they were more democratic than us today, but I think they were never a true democratic government. In ancient Athens they were ruled by few, by only the men. “It is true that we are called a democracy, because the government is ruled by many, not by the few.”
But back then they thought that the social class was bad. For example “ Social class is not allowed to interfere with someone’s merit, and poverty does not block the way”. ( document A). I think that the social class should be able to interfere the any other. That's why I think that ancient athens was truly democratic because all the people should be able to vote and own their own land.
Is democracy the best form of government? It is mainly focused on the power of the people. A democracy is all about forming, managing, and collecting knowledge. If Athens becomes a democratic place, it will develop into a successful city-state because of it and the people, as they will be the ones ruling it. Democracy is successful since it organizes useful knowledge, making it both innovational and educational.
The term democracy is a contested concept with many classifications. A government made up of the people for the people is the easiest definition to focus on. A democracy needs have these key elements of a political system for choosing the

In ancient Athens or Athenian democracy, the word “Demos” had three different definitions or meanings. The first definition is that it was a word they used for a local village. They also translated it as “deme” which means “a smallest administrative unit of the Athenian state like a voting precinct or school district” (Stoa, 2017). This is where men who were 18 years of age and were Athenians with Athenian parents “presented themselves to officials of their deme”, to prove that they were free men, 18 years of age, and with Athenian parents after which they were enrolled into the Assembly List to enable them to participate in politics or voting (Stoa, 2017).
When you look at the literal definition of democracy in the Merriam-Webster dictionary, there is a decently large explanation. When looking at this definition and trying to decide whether the Athenian democratic system was truly democratic, one would have to go with the answer no. While it has been stated that Athens is the “cradle of democracy”, and that it was better than any of the other governments in the world, it was still a work in progress. The Athenian democracy, while it did give more power to the people, still left a lot of citizens out. The current American democracy may have steamed from Athens, but they do not really have that much in common.
Democracy, a form of government, allows the people in their own nationality to vote for people in order for them to become representatives as a result to vote on new laws that would affect their own nationality. One of the many states of Greece, ancient Athens was indeed not truly democratic as a result of not inclusive, other than male citizens, to gain authority in ancient Athens, ¨Demokratia was ruled by male citizens only, excluding women, free foreigners(Metics) and slaves.¨(Document D), therefore ruling Athens was only accessible to male citizen since since women, free foreigners(Metics), and slaves were not allowed to rule as a result of not being male citizens. One of the many states of Greece, ancient Athens, was indeed not truly democratic as a result of not even using the essentials of democracy that is used today, “Thus, by our standards, it was oligarchy, not democracy.¨(Document D), therefore ancient Athens was not using democracy as their form of government, they were using oligarchy, another form of government in which a small group of people has power and control, as their form of government instead of democracy.
Unlike the Romans, Athenians had a strict but fair schedule that allowed them to enjoy citizenship equally. Equally, hard workers have brought Athens power just as much as hereditary leaders. According to Document B all citizens should be allowed to speak their opinion and have a share in election because of the hard work they do to make the city powerful. Athenians allowed poor and common men to win a position in government which was a transition from the wealthy having power to everyone having power.
The term, Democracy, stems from the Greek word ‘demokratia’ which means rule by the people and it wasn’t until around 500 BCE in Athens where the first examples of democracy originated. While Athens is widely regarded as the first historical example of a democratic system, some scholars believe that the Roman Empire’s republic system was more democratic than that of the Greek. As I will come to
It also represents the control of an organization or group by the majority of its members. Democracy did not originate with the founding of the United States. The term "democracy" comes from two Greek words: "demos" meaning the people and "kratia" meaning power or authority. It is defined as being a government by
“Democracy is beautiful in theory; in practice it is a fallacy,” said Benito Mussolini. By the time one enters the third grade they become aware of concept of democracy. Specifically in America, one is taught that they live in a democratic society. When asking what is democracy, the answer is never truly defiente. The answers given may be; a society where everyone votes, or by dictionary definition “a system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of the state; typically through elected representation.”
the idea of representative government began to take root in some city states, specifically Athens. Athenian reformers moved toward democracy, rule by the people. In Athens citizens participated directly in political decision making. However there were limitations on citizenship to ensure that only the most rational people were able to vote. Through the construction of democracy in Athens, equality of all citizens became greater, and the city would become the top democracy of all the democracies.
First of all, it is important to know the definition of democracy and its aspects. According to Peter Joyce (2005), the democratic government was initiated in the Greek city state of Athens in the fifth century B.C., so as a consequence, the word ‘democracy’ derived from two Greek words, demos (meaning ‘people’) and kratos (meaning ‘power’) , which means ‘government by the people’. Secondly, Giovanni Sartori (1997), a Political Science Researcher states that ‘democracy’ is an abbreviation that means Liberal Democracy. He distinguishes three aspects: democracy as a principle of legitimacy (power not derives
