Education for the Better A common struggle we have today is the topic of education and how it’s supposed to be used in our society. Some may say that education is only used as a time consumer place holder to stop the flooding of jobs while others say that it is a journey to discover who we are and what we are interested in doing in the future. In the autobiography “The Autobiography of Malcolm X” by Alex Haley and Malcolm X (1965), they emphasize how Malcolm’s prison studies made him be able to become one of the most articulate and powerful leaders of black America during the 1960s. Freeman A. Hrabowki III’s (2003) commentary, “College prepare people for life” discusses how college isn’t a waste of time and how its education …show more content…
Although this has a point, colleges actually prepare people for jobs and more importantly, prepare them for life. While in college, students need strong counseling to know what their best options are to succeed in the future. In the article “Colleges prepare people for life” it says, “Lack of counseling is one reason that fewer than 10 percent of Americans from the lowest income quartile have earned a college degree by age 24, compared to 80 percent of those in the top quartile.” Furthermore, there is data showing that the fastest growing job categories require at least a college degree. College graduates are much more likely to be employed than those with only a high school diploma and earn drastically higher salaries. This shows that not only is education is important in life itself, but education will affect what your future job will look like depending on how hard you work in your high school/college …show more content…
Education will determine how successful you are in the future, and will lead you to find joy and happiness with all of the things you can accomplish. Also education should be taught while the children is young and has a fresh mind. Otherwise, it’ll be too late and later in life they will regret not learning or trying to work their hardest. That’s why we should really be trying to bring out every child’s dream and potential to be the best person they can be. The main goal of education is like teaching a man how to fish instead of just giving him the fish. It is to teach it to the children at a small age so that they could use their knowledge for the rest of their life. Without that, there doesn’t seem to be a purpose for
Throughout the Autobiography of Malcolm X, Malcolm is given different names from his friends and family. Each name represents a different stage of his life. In fact, for all the important moments in his life, Malcolm is given a new name. Malcolm used these names to express his mind, whether he thought about religion or reefers. In Haley’s
Malcolm X in his essay “Learning to Read’’ describes his experiences learning how to express himself in writing. As a non-native English speaker, I relate to his struggles. The way Malcolm X, without a teacher, managed to become a good writer, and with sheer determination he managed to read the whole dictionary. His determination greatly influenced the civil rights movement despite his methods. Malcolm X’s “ Learning to Read” describes the baby steps of a great civil rights leader.
Why did Malcolm X want to learn how to read? The title of his article is Malcolm X, “A Homemade Education”, and the source is The Autobiography of Malcolm X. He wanted to learn how to read so he was looking up words in the dictionary and writing them down. He was writing words from the dictionary. In learning to read and write, Malcolm X effects include the following: intelligent conversations, freedom, and spread thoughts with others when talking to someone.
Summary of "Learning to Read" by Malcolm X In his essay "Learning to Read" from the chapter "Saved" in Malcolm's Autobiography published in New York (Grove Press, 1965). Malcolm was born in Omaha, Nebraska and his father was a political activist on behalf of Marcus Garvey. After he and his family moved to East Lansing, Michigan, where his father was killed and his mother placed in a mental institution. he became an orphan and ended up on the streets of Detroit where he was known as "Detroit Red".
Malcolm X 's "A Homemade Education" uncovers a story of how he gained knowledge by himself and how it guided his thoughts and ideas in becoming a more knowledgeable speaker. Although Malcolm X is a very outspoken person about racism in the United States and throughout the world, he had the right to be upset but goes a little overboard on blaming whites. The main focus of "A Homemade Education" by Malcolm X is his endless attempt to increase his knowledge by teaching himself how to fully understand different words of the dictionary. Although he was inspired by a fellow inmate when he was in Charlestown Prison, Malcolm, young as he was back then, began reading intensely but couldn’t understand exactly what he was reading because of his writing and reading skills. Starting from being illiterate, Malcolm X used every resource he had to broaden his language abilities and be able to communicate to the world and his people.
In “Learning to Read”, Malcolm X, writes about how he was enlightened by the text and novels that he read in prison and discusses how he self educated himself. Malcolm X was more empowered due to his passion in the history of black people in America because he wanted to make a change in the world. The teaching curriculum in America lacks relatable topics that engage young minds. Public schools in America usually lack the opinion of the students. Students would have more of a desire to learn if school wasn’t only about passing.
Getting education isn’t only to impart knowledge, but strengthen motivation that propels learners to work on what they are willing to become. Malcolm X is an good example of a self-educated articulate and powerful black American leader who was vocal against racism and fought for the right of the black American. In the essay “Learning to Read”, Malcolm X identifies how motivated attitude can push someone to further academic career. He says, “let me tell us something: from then until I left that prison, in every free moment I had, if I was not reading in the library, I was reading on my bunk”(page 162). Malcolm recounts his experience on reading journey with motivation of self-education because he understand without the ability to read, a basic
For many people, college is an important key for their future. Some people go to college for the job opportunities and the new windows it can open. Others go just for the education and experience. A good education is beneficial from many different viewpoints; in truth, it is a possibility that one's adult life could be much harder than people care to think. One can have better wealth, is less likely to be unemployed, and a much higher chance of being closer to your family.
Thesis: In “The Autobiography of Malcolm X”, Malcolm X in his telling of his life to Alex Haley uncovers the theme of positive and negative environments unearthed by the interaction of African Americans and White Americans in his life and what those kinds of environments inherently produce. Annotated Bibliography Nelson, Emmanuel S. Ethnic American Literature: an Encyclopedia for Students. Greenwood, An Imprint of ABC-CLIO, LLC, 2015.This encyclopedia points out that the negative interaction he held with the white man as a young hustler was countered by these same experiences pushing Malcolm X to reclaim his “African identity”. This shows, as described by the cited work, what a man pushed by his negative interactions with the oppressive white men is willing to do to find his identity (i.e. through hustling).
According to Andrew J. Rotherham’s article “Actually, College Is Very Much Worth it. ”he states, “Meanwhile, in 2010, the unemployment rate was 9.2 percent for those with only some college and more than 10 percent for those with just a high school degree, but it was 5.4 percent for college graduates.” The data Rotherham provides shows that even with some college education, you have a higher chance of getting employed than those with just a high school degree. The one group that outweighs all the others is the college graduates proving that with a college degree unemployment is less likely to befriend people who do pursue college. Some people might say that there are loads of jobs that do not require a college degree, especially in this time and age.
The story” Learning to Read”, by Malcolm X, depicts how the motivation could push people further to achieve their academic goal no matter where you from or who you are. The author himself never made it past the eighth grade because he dropped out from the school. Of course with unemployment he got himself involved in criminal activity and later, be putted into prison. the life in prison makes him revalue his past and trying to stand up for himself in order to beat this circumstance. He taught himself how to read and become literate even all he could rely on is a dictionary, and the limit recourse obtained from the prison school.
There is an ample amount of information that leads people to believe that college is a great choice. In Source F, it is shown that, “Adults who graduated from a four-year college believe that, on average, they are earning $20,000 more a year as a result of having gotten that degree. Adults who did not attend college believe that, on average they are earning $20,000 a year less as a result.” Also, provided in Source F, “...55% say it [college] was very useful in helping them prepare for a job or career.” While these statistics are true, the negatives still outweigh the positives.
A child does not typically think about their lives ahead. Although they may not think about it, it is still there. Life ahead means getting a job to make money for everything else and if one wants a good job in the future, then college is the best option. College education is worth it because it makes a person better and more educated, it is not as expensive as some think, and college pays for itself once there is a good job to pay for it.
The goal of education, from my point of view, is to facilitate the development of healthy human beings who are able to support themselves, other humans, and
