Freedom Have you ever wondered about how words came to be and got their meanings? The meaning of words changes overtime, as people use them in different ways. However some words like the word ‘shirt’ are very straightforward and are easy to interpret, but other words such as, ‘love’, ‘hope’, and ‘freedom’, carry much deeper meanings. The word freedom means to be free; to be free can mean to have the right to conduct oneself in whichever way they like, without restraint, it can mean having power over others and their freedom, and it can have a special meaning to each individual. Freedom in the dictionary is defined as: The power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint; in other words for each individual …show more content…
People with power, can do whatever they want and say whatever they want because they have control over others. They have the power to punish those who oppose their views, and since they are the ones who punish or restrict others no one is able to punish or restrict them. One form of using power to restrict others, (in order to maintain personal freedom), can be found through censorship; which is used to restrict others freedom. Leaders use censorship to restrict messages people are able to convey through speech or other measures. This is seen in the story The Censors by: Luisa Valenzuela which tells the story of Juan, “Well, you’ve got to beat them to the punch, do what everyone tries to do: sabotage the machinery, throw sand in its gears, that is to say get to the bottom of the problem to try to stop it.This was Juan’s sound plan when he, along with many others, applied for a censor’s job — not because he had a calling like others or needed a job: no, he applied simply to intercept his own letter, an idea none too original but comforting. He was hired immediately, for each day more and more censors are needed and no one would bother to check on his references.” This depicts the character Juan, becoming a censor in order to have the freedom to mail the letters that he wants to mail without consequences. He wants to gain power and be the one doing the censoring, in order to avoid being the one who gets censored. This way he limits others freedom in order to have his own
A great example of censorship in our book occurs when Beatty (the captain of the firemen) comes to Montag's house because he believes Montag had brought a book home with him, saying, “If you don’t want a house built, hide the nails and wood. If you don’t want a man unhappy politically, don’t give him two sides to a question to worry him, give him one. Better yet, give him none.”. This quote is a blatant example of censorship in society because Beatty is saying that it is better for the government or regime really, to not give people the choice and rather give them no choice in a matter when the government can decide for them. Meaning people of society are separated and alienated from one another subconsciously or without a choice.
My goal of this essay is to prove how the censorship of different ideas and opinions
As previously stated, Ray Bradbury deals with some issues of censorship in his book Fahrenheit 451. In this novel the entire population is controlled and censored and things are terrible because of it. As said in the book. “We are living in a time when flowers are trying to live off flowers, instead of growing on food rain and black loam.”. It means we need to read books and learn to truly grow instead of just living off each other.
Despite the negative impact of technology and conformity on society in the novel, censorship remains the most significant problem. Censorship is the primary tool used by the government to control the population and prevent the spread of dissenting ideas. It limits people's ability to gain knowledge and think critically, which in turn, hinders their ability to challenge the status quo and
Censorship is first defined and explained by an antagonist, Captain Beatty, as doing anything that would “step on the toes of… minorities.” The society is based purely on finding happiness for the masses as Beatty also says that if they “feel they're thinking, they'll get a sense of motion without moving. And they'll be happy, because facts of that sort don't change.” Every idea that limits the minorities comes from trying to pursue happiness and peace for the society as a whole by avoiding conflict and making individuals equal, undefined by minorities. Their backwards world believes “we must all be alike.
The underlying conflict between censorship and free speech is highlighted in this quote. Faber agrees that people have the freedom to select what they read, watch, and believe, but censorship aims to restrict access to specific ideas or information in
The government “censors” any mail that has any impropriety in its containments. The author of this story mainly wrote it because of Argentina’s troubled history with censorship and violation of human rights, Argentinian government struggled with giving freedom to its citizens, they took the ability of making their own choices away, they took ability to have a relationship with people away, they took a lot away from the freedom that the citizens deserved. “all this time the freedom, maybe even the life, of both sender and receiver is in jeopardy” (The Censors P.2). The different types of governments that show their country's freedom is

By using censorship as an act of control, the government is able to maintain its authority, power, and prevents oppositions and criticisms. Firemen, who are in charge
By true definition, censorship is the suppression and illegalization of speech, public communication, and other information which may be considered objectionable, harmful, or politically incorrect as determined by the government in authority. The purpose of censorship is perhaps to protect the people, however, negative outcomes typically follow when this route is taken to control a governed people. Censorship directly attack the main characters of Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 and George Orwell’s 1984. Although government censorship was perpetuated to create a whole and perfect society, Fahrenheit 451 and 1984 both demonstrate that censorship brought on by the government negatively controls a community’s thoughts, actions, and their people as a whole.
In “The Censors” it's in the form of censoring letters, and in “Harrison Bergeron,” it's in the form of imposing handicaps on people. These restrictions cause people to comply with the government, whether they like it or not, taking away their free will. Therefore, In both “Harrison
