Text Features Assignment The First Misadventure (The Chicken Squad, Book #1) by Doreen Cronin, illustrated by Kevin Cornell is the story of four little chicks: Dirt, Sugar, Poppy, and Sweetie who live in the backyard along with a retired search and rescue dog named J.J. When an adorable, though frightened squirrel named Tail enters the yard yelling “Help!” the chicks do their best to solve Squirrel’s ‘problem’. J.J. reappears at the end of the story to help solve the mystery. I really enjoyed this book. It is filled with humor causing me to laugh out loud many times as I read. The chick’s quirky personalities added to the enjoyment. …show more content…
The Lexile measure is 290L indicating the reading ability and text difficulty between 1st and 2nd grade. The Developmental Reading Assessment, a tool used by instructors to identify a students reading level, accuracy, fluency, and comprehension is 24, which is mid 2nd grade. Scholastic Book Wizard lists Pirates Past Noon’s interest level at grades 3 – 5. This is a chapter book. It has ten chapters and has 67 pages. It has six full-page illustrations. All illustrations are done in black and white. Only nine pages have illustrations on half of the page with text on the other half. The font size looks to be at 12. There is more text on most pages than white space and sometimes the picture is on the bottom half and sometimes it’s on the top. Words that are emphasized are italicized. The dialect of the pirates such as ‘lubber’ and ‘cap’n’ might make it hard for a reader to understand but also adds to the story. Some prior knowledge of pirates would be helpful. Full pages vary from 118 to 128 words per page. There aren’t any word bubbles used. This book had much more text than pictures, which might make it difficult for younger readers. There aren’t a lot of difficult words but new words are introduced and then reinforce with repetition. I personally feel like Pirates Past Noon was a more difficult book to read than The 1st Misadventure due to the story line and the amount of text on each
In my report i’m going to talk about the Pirate clothing, religion, where they from, how they live, the things they do, their history, and my 3 main points are gonna be their ships, blackbeard, and their flag . Almost all pirates stole their ships because they couldn’t buy ships incase they got caught and sent to jail. Once they had taken over a ship they had to covert it for pirate life, this usually meant making more room for sailors to live on bored and strengthening the decks to hold the weight of the heavy cannons. Ships sailing on their own often sailed close to warship or joined other convoys of ships to protect themselves from pirates. Pirates could only attack one ship at a time, so if the sailors traveled in groups there was a less chance of their boat being the one attacked.
It was clothbound in green linen, and embossed in gold on the cover was the name of the ship… Dozens of pages had been ripped out. THe remaining pages were wrinkled and stained from water damage. It smelled salty” Gantos 81, is the finding of the ship’s log. This book ends up becoming the nail in the coffin while gantos is pleading in court.
Everything stared in 1757 when the French and the British were fighting for the territory of North America. As well, Indian tribes helped on the war fighting for both sides. The most important character in the story are Chingachook, his son Uncas, and the adopoted son Hawkeye. The British army needs new volunteers to fight against to the French, so Colonist Jack Winthrop and a group of other colonist leave for Albany in New York. Winthrop leave to talk with General Weed about these terms.
Words per sentence: The average number of words in each sentence. This statistic tells whether you have tended to use short sentences (eight words or fewer) or long sentences (20 words or more). Short sentences are generally easier to understand, but result in a choppy, abrupt rhythm. Longer sentences flow better, but are more difficult to understand. Characters per word
O’Brien had to use many terms like this to give the reader a good picture of the ship. As I read the book, I find the dialogue the most interesting because it sounds so realistic to how English seamen would have spoke in the 19th century. This is the biggest and most positive reason why I gave an A- to this
In Marcus Rediker’s Villains of All Nations, pirates Mary Read and Anne Bonny are represented as being vulnerable, emotional, extraordinary women. Both being born illegitimate children, Rediker poses an understanding, empathetic treatment of these women, despite their representation of ‘liberty’ emanating from the brutality of piracy. The constant referral to Read and Bonny as female pirates indiscreetly implies that Rediker interprets their participation in piracy as delicate, which is unjust. Females and delicateness were a dominant association in the 18th century. Rather than referring to the two women simply as pirates, Rediker uses the phrase female pirates to imply that their participation on ship was neither masculine nor violent.
The author uses a limited amount of diction throughout the book, because she wanted to keep the main focus on the character. “A particularly repugnant guard was known as sh*thead,”(210). This example of diction describes how everyone felt about the guard. She uses the diction to give the reader a better thought about what was going on throughout the book. “For the umpteenth time, Louie cursed whoever had stocked the raft,” (164).
Rediker illustrates this purpose by providing a Marxist interpretation of piracy as well as a bottom-up history of piracy during the Golden Age. Rediker divides the Golden Age of Atlantic piracy into three phases and these phases are chronicled in Villains of All Nations. Villains of All Nations is paramount to the study of Atlantic World history as Rediker highlights how Golden Age Atlantic piracy
In the end I found the film to be easier to understand vs the book as it was an easier and more straight forward plot line whereas in the book it seemed to jump around leading to constant flipping between stories and pages to get a better
The mood of the story was spine-chilling and mystifying. The name of the island, “Ship-Trap” Island, itself gives off a daunting vibe to the reader. The author wanted his audience to feel as if they were there themselves which is why he added so many details. The details narrow the imagery in the audience’s heads to help them better grasp the plot in the story. If the author hadn’t been so descriptive in the story, we wouldn’t have been able to envision what the island was
Language- The language that is used in these books is very simple and doesn't have meany big words. They tell how small the Littles are and how there tails look but there isn't much about what they really look like, there are pictures the show the caricatures to help show what they look like. The books do do a good job at describing where they live and with the help of the illustrations you can get a good visual for the book. When I read the book I could put defiant voices with the different characters but the way they spoke was primarily the same.
Many people also feel that this book is irrelevant to student’s lives. However, kids should learn what life would be like for kids at their age in a different time period. Like what was stated before, in a history class, when we learn about the history, we learn about the straight facts, not as much of the personal lives of people living in that time. Since the novel is showing the personal recollections of one boy in the time period, students can identify the similarities between the two lessons. Since the similarities will be present, the students could make connections to both of the
The confusion made me read the whole story in order to understand the role of the two main characters who are mysterious, romantic, and wise. And also to identify the situation of the story through its setting which is confusing, imaginable, and dull. A teenage bodiless and genderless character
The 1986 movie Top Gun, directed by renowned director Tony Scott, is a movie made particularly memorable due to its outstanding cast, amazing visuals, and action-based storyline.
