What influences the work that authors write? This may be a simple question but in reality there are many answers to this question like; Family and friends, community, social media, the environment and many other things. But the most important of all is the historical events that may be happening during the writers’ time. These events influence the viewpoints of the authors and what they decide to write about. For example, writers in the civil rights movement write about regression and human rights being violated compared to those authors who came after the civil rights movements talk about more freedom and human rights finally being acknowledged. These historical events that occurred during the authors’ time are significant to the readers of the authors because it allows the reader to interpret the work the way it was supposed to be, and understand what the writers in trying to explain through his or her …show more content…
In her books she focuses on how Mexican-Americans have problems adapting to the new American society. (Pat Mora) this is because of the hardship that was put upon them by Americans because they were Mexican. During this time of the movements and segregation there was a spike in the creation of literature that was mostly about cultural expression. In her works mora often talks about what the Mexican- Americans had to do in order for them to fit in and not be different. During the movements there was often violence put on people who went against the ways of the time. Children had a hard time making friends and adapting to the new society because the other children didn’t want to be friends with someone who was considered different from them. In her life and work Kahlo espoused the ethic of Mexicanidad (Mexicanness), picturing herself as nourished by her Indian roots despite the fact that she was the daughter of an Hungarian Jew and a Mexican mother of Spanish and Indian descent (Herrera 1990). As she sought her own roots, Kahlo’s personal pain did not eclipse her commitment to Mexico and the Mexican people. She always also voiced concern for her country as it struggled for an independent cultural identity. Therefore, from looking at Self-Portrait on the Border Line Between Mexico and the United States it provides evidence of an insightful understanding of the fragmented Mexican identity.
From the start, it is clear that T.C. Boyle’s Tortilla Curtain aims to shed a light on the topic of Mexican immigrants in the United States. However, by having both a Mexican and an American woman share similar violent experiences with men, Boyle also places an emphasis on the less pronounced theme of sexual violence and discrimination against women, even in polar opposite realities. Early on, an invisible bond begins to form between the two main female characters, America, a recent Mexican immigrant and mother to be, and Kyra a successful white businessman. And while they never actually meet one another, as they endure and recover from their own personal problematic experiences with certain men, they are affected immensely by these events. America tries her best balance her new life of being an illegal, living in the ravine of Topanga Canyon with Candido, finding work and preparing for her baby to come.
Book Summary Under the Mesquite is a story about a fourteen year old girl named Lupita from Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico. Lupita is the oldest child of eight and discovers that her mother has been diagnosed with cancer. Lupita is faced with leaving Mexico and coming to the United states to move to Eagle Pass, Texas. Lupita must face cultural adjustments and acclimate to a new home. Lupita has more responsibilities than a typical fourteen year old teenager of dealing with her mother’s illness, school, being a caregiver to her younger siblings, and conflict with friends and family.
One of the toughest adjustments, having been born to Mexican parents, is migrating to an unknown country where traditions and languages differ from one 's own. Though many pursue an education and strive for a better life, the purpose behind an immigrant, like myself, differs from the typical American. Immigrants strive for a life that was once impossible, going to school is not only to attain an education, but to better prove that we can also become successful regardless of our traditions and skin color. I lived in a country for over fifteen years, fearing deportation, not only losing a home, but potentially saying goodbye to a bright future. Although many feel empathy for Mexican-Americans, it is undeniably difficult to truly comprehend the immense trauma children and even adults undergo upon experiencing racism and prejudice.
Barrientos tells of learning to read and write in spanish. One key feature of a literacy narrative is an indication of the narrative 's significance. A fictional story is not a list of events, but a tale with a storyline and plot. People reading historical fiction stories won’t interpret the history as a random thing in the past. Instead, in their quest to understand the plot, they have to work to look for correlation and causation between the historical events. This is very important for understanding history, as it allows readers to strongly connect all the small events within the big historical event together in their mind instead of viewing those events as separate things. For instance, in the book Johnny Tremain, the narrator says “The work on the Dartmouth and the Eleanor finished about the same time.
Basically, what the authors tries to show is a strong abandonment of the government to the chronic gang violence and a big division of two group of people. “Sociologist Buford Farris likewise described the social relation between Anglos and Mexican Americans in the mid-sixties as a model of two almost separate systems”2. The division of these two group of people made that a small group of businessmen “controlled all commences and development”3. In the second part, the author gives a description of how the Chicano Movement starts getting Mexican American students and politically aware youth workers and to form the Mexican American Youth Organization (MAYO). Later, the women movement is going to be added to this group since they were not strong enough or they were not considered equal as the Chicanos.
Firoozeh writes about her life as an Iranian immigrant to America. Her family is treated with kindness by neighbors when they come to live in America and get lost on their way home from school: “…the woman and her daughter walked us all the way to our front porch and even helped my mother unlock the unfamiliar door,” (Dumas, 7). Firoozeh and her mother are not discriminated against because they are immigrants who don’t speak English, the Americans help them despite their differences. Had the neighbors not been helpful and patient, Firoozeh’s journey home would have been somewhat traumatic and daunting. While this a rather specific isolated example, it can serve as an analogy for all immigrants’ experience.
Response to “Our Fear of Immigrants” In “Our Fear of Immigrants” Jeremy Adam Smith takes a neutral stance on the immigration and anti-immigration argument. Smith begins by telling the story of a 4th grade class at Jefferson Elementary School in Berkeley, California who try to fight back against immigration laws after a classmate of theirs was deported back to his home country. Smith then goes on to compare the 4th graders to the adults of their town who fight for stronger immigration laws asking his readers what qualities the children possess that the rest of the citizens do not to make them react so differently.
Immigrants that are new to the American society are often so used to their own culture that it is difficult for them to accept and adapt to the American culture. The language that is spoken, as well as the various holidays and traditions that Americans entertain themselves with, aren’t what most immigrants would deem a neccessity for their life to move on. Nonetheless, they still have to be accustomed to these things if they have any chance of suceeding in a land where knowledge is key. The story “My Favorite Chaperone” written by Jean Davies Okimoto, follows the life of a young girl who along with her brother Nurzhan, her mother known as mama, and her father whom she refers to as Papi have immigrated to the United States from Kazakhstan, through a dating magazine. Throughout the story each family member faces problems that causes them to realize just how different their life is know that they’ve immigrated..
As Elie Wiesel once said,“The opposite of love is not hate, it's indifference. The opposite of art is not ugliness, it's indifference. The opposite of faith is not heresy, it's indifference. And the opposite of life is not death, it's indifference.” When it comes to changing the course of history as we know it, and to influence society’s norms and values, social activism is a must.
