Prohibition
Prohibition was a major part of the 1920s, “Prohibition created more crime. It destroyed legal jobs and created a black market in which criminals violently fought over” (Hanson). The 18th amendment was mainly created to help stop problems and abuse that was occurring in families because of alcoholic husbands. The amendment also promised to lower crime and violence rates, but instead, it increased them. Prohibition had the intention to do good but, it ended up creating many more problems for the U.S. to handle both economically and socially.
The U.S. was working on the 18th Amendment for many years before it was actually approved because they needed to ensure everyone was on board. Although their vote was for Prohibition, the senate still needed at least three-fourths of the states to agree with the proposition (Lieurance 6). On January 16, 1919, thirty-six out of forty-eight

The movies made car crashes, gunfire, and killing seem like wonderful things just because these gangsters had cool cars, girlfriends, and nice clothes (Lieurance 71). These gangsters were so glorified in the movies, but in real life, they were no joke. “During the first ten years of the 18th amendment, the murder rate climbed to 78% across the country and the arrests for drunken driving increased by 81%” (Hanson). One of the most popular and well-known gangsters in the 1920s was Al Capone (Lieurance 72). His most popular nickname was “Scarface” because when he was young he was attacked by a man named Frank Galluccio that cut his face three times with a razor (Lieurance 72). Capone was in a gang in Chicago and worked for his uncle Jim Colosimo who was a major crime boss at the time (Lieurance 73). Back In 1920, there is a kind of believe that revolves around the American society during that period - people see alcohol as a bad thing, meanwhile they also think that the consumption of alcohol is bad, as it will lead to other troubles such as the rise of criminal activities. People also believed that by drinking alcohol, it will endanger American’s health, and lower an individual’s productivity. Therefore, the government ended up decided to crackdown on alcohol, and thus, the 18th amendment is created. (Doc. D) This document conveys that Americans wanted to repeal the 18th Amendment because it is unfair to have to follow a law that law makers are not even following themselves. In addition, the failure of enforcement was due to the fact of there not being enough police to stop everyone from getting alcohol. Frederic J. Haskin states, “Smuggling from Mexico and Canada has been successful on a large scale because it is an utter impossibility to patrol thousands of miles of border… (B)ootleggers…” (Doc. C)
The 1920s were filled with gangs and many changes in society. One of the those changes was the addition of the 18th. The 18th amendment was ratified January 16, 1919. It created something called prohibition which outlawed the distribution, production, and use of alcohol. Despite the law, people still continued to drink alcohol in places called speakeasies.
During the 1920’s crime was at an all time high in Chicago due to prohibition and turf wars between rival gangs. One of the most famous gangsters during this time period was Alphonse “Al” Capone. Born in Brooklyn, New York to two poor immigrant parents on January 17, 1899 he grew up being active in two different kid gangs, the Brooklyn Rippers and the Forty Thieves Juniors. When he got older he started working at different jobs in a candy store, a cutter in a book bindery and a pin boy in a bowling alley.(Chicagohs) When he was a teenager he was recruited by a famous gangster named Johnny Torrio.

Prohibition, the 18th Amendment, was the outlawing of the production and consumption of alcohol from 1920-1933. Advocates of Prohibition insisted that many issues and crimes often linked to alcohol would be eliminated if alcohol were to be illegal. However, this wasn't the case. Instead, crime increased. So many people protested the 18th Amendment, that it eventually was discontinued in 1933.
One of these incidents led to him receiving his infamous nickname, Scarface. This incident happened while working at the Harvard Inn. Someone by the name of Frank Galluccio cut Capone on his left cheek, leaving a scar. The reason Frank slashed Capone was because Capone insulted Frank's sister. But it was the brutal murder of a low-level gang member of the rival White Hand Gang that led to his upbringing.
Prohibition led to the rise of organized crime and failed as a policy due to many loopholes and large numbers of corrupt officials. Though started with good intentions it was not a good policy because it destroyed jobs and attempted to destroy an industry. These reasons lead to Prohibition’s failure and the repealing of the 18th Amendment in
In 1919, Congress passed the 18th Amendment which banned the sale and consumption of alcohol in America (Doc B). Prohibitionists overlooked the tenacious American tradition of strong drink and of weak control by the central government. Thus, there was tension between the modernists and the traditionalists. Although the amendment was passed, alcohol was still distributed illegally. Actually, prohibition spawned many crimes, such as illegal sale of alcohol and gang wars.
The eighteenth amendment was not imposed until 1920, but with early American’s infamy in heavy drinking, numerous groups had been trying to ban alcohol for decades. Since the 1800s, groups concerned about alcohol consumption began to form, including the Prohibition Party. The activists sponsored the campaign of many presidential candidates who opposed alcohol (Gale). Although men were included in prohibition activities, women, primarily represented the movement. After endless suffering women faced because of intoxicated males, they were hoping to remove that extra burden from society.
After being kicked out he eventually found Johnny Torrio who would change Al Capone’s life forever. He helped Jonny run drugs to woman to anything illegal. During one of his escapades Capone met another gangster who was from the opposite side of town who cut Capone’s left cheek and left a long scar. Which eventually he got his name Scarface. Torrio Eventually moved to Chicago to run a whorehouse in 1909.
During the 1920’s gang related crime was a serious issue. The leader of all this violence and corruption was a man named Al “Scarface” Capone (“Al Capone”). This organized crime, dehumanization, and corruption, became the ultimate image of Chicago for people throughout the world. He was largely immersed in things like gambling, prostitution, and the illegal sale of liquor. He was not convicted for any of his crimes, even the St. Valentine's Day massacre of 1929, until he was imprisoned for tax evasion (Horan).
Although there have been many gangsters, Al Capone was one of the most notable because he became famous in Chicago during prohibition. He was known to be called “Scarface” because of his scars that were left on his face from a fight. He would also bring violence with other gangsters around Chicago. Al Capone was also known for bootlegging, prostitution, and gambling.
