Crucible/Scarlet Letter Essay Matt Linton Crucibles in Salem “I am only wondering how I may prove what she [Abigail] told me, Elizabeth. If the girl’s a saint now, I think it is not easy to prove she’s a fraud, and the town gone so silly. She told it to me in a room alone—I have no proof for it.”-Act 2, Page 53. The word “crucible” means a severe test or trial. The quote above shows how during the witch trials, it was close to impossible to give proof of someone being a witch. That you could not show the court hard evidence of the “supernatural occurrences” of the devil’s doing to support your side of the story in court. Which relates to the definition of the word “crucible” by showing that there were severe trials going on in the play which relates to the meaning of the title. Proctor. In the play Mr. Proctor is visited at his house by Reverend Hales. Hales asks if the family knows their 10 commandments. After Goodie Proctor says she has no doubt in knowing them he turns to John. John gets through 9 of the 10 commandments and then gets stumped. His wife quickly notices and jumps in to remind him of the last one, as if he had drawn a blank. Along with this test, Mr. Proctor is put through a trial in front of the judges of the town. During this trial the judges ask Mr. Proctor a series of very challenging questions to see if he is guilty of practicing witchcraft in the town of Salem. These events, which include Mr. Proctor going through tests and trials are examples which connect to the title of the play “The Crucible”, which again means a severe test or
In the well-known novel The Scarlet Letter one of the protagonists, Hester, commits a horrible sin that in her culture was considered to be as bad as murder. Hester committed adultery with one of the most holy people in her community, Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale. Reverend Dimmesdale tried to hide his mistake of adultery and conform to the norm of the society he lived in. Many people consider his cowardice to be his worst action. A famous quote contradicts that notion, “The opposite of courage in our society is not cowardice, but conformity.”
In the Crucible there are no actual dates of when the witch trials actually took place. Since the story is taking place in the days of early settlement the story can not be proven or disproven. But, since the fear of witches and the devil was real in those times then I can say that Salem Witch Trials might have happened, but , this specific set of incidents did not. According to act one in the crucible “ But Betty collapses in her hands and lies inert on the bed.(I.113-132)” this quote shows how this story is non-fiction because of the detailed words.
The meaning of a Crucible is "a situation of severe trial, or in which different elements interact, leading to the creation of something new." This idea of a severe test and/or a "trial by fire" is seen throughout the play and its characters. I believe that it is mostly seen in John Proctor and Reverend Hale. John Proctor's crucible is how he must stand for something in the world where everyone is against him, and where few people stand with him. This forces proctor to speak up once he realizes he can no longer be silent, as remaining silent was only encouraging those who were in authority to continue to beguile the town.
Proctor is led by certain circumstances to a great moral and ethical decision. It is mainly to lie and save his life and his farm from
This quote relates back to Elie and the book because Elie may not be alive today if it wasn’t for his loved ones, specifically his dad Shlomo. Throughout the past few chapters Elie claims he is fighting for his life because he needs to be there for his dad. This is exactly what the quote is implying because his dad is worth fighting for. Elie needs Shlomo by his side because he helps guide him. Throughout the book Shlomo has taught him how fast to eat his rations, when he should sleep, and ways to save himself and stay strong.

A slave brought to the Americas from Barbados, Tituba is a naive, and significant character overlooked in Puritan Society. She caused the uproar of witchcraft making Tituba responsible for the mass hysteria that occurred in Salem. Brought to Salem from Barbados, Tituba began working as Reverend Parris slave. Following her culturally rooted background, Tituba brought along a group of girls into the woods to start casting spells, and perform “black magic.” Eventually in the story the girls are found dancing in the woods by Reverend Parris and the blame is amongst Tituba.
