The Cruelty of Racism Racism is the belief that one race possesses inherent traits that make that particular race superior to other races. In 1900s, black people were treated cruelly, and even got killed because of racism. They were considered inferior to the white race. People used to judge each other based on their skin color, and race. The society used to turn a blind eye to the racial problems. Inspired by Jim Crow Laws, Scottsboro Trial, and the African American Church Burning American novelist Harper Lee wrote her book To Kill a Mockingbird to portray the injustices and discrimination black people faced back in the 1900s. Jim Crow Laws were laws that enforced racial segregation in the Southern United States, these laws meant that black …show more content…
In the article Scottsboro Boys and To Kill a Mockingbird: Two Trials for the Classroom it stated that, “The lessons of the infamous 1930s Scottsboro Boys case in which two young white women wrongfully accused nine African American youths of rape illustrate through fact what Harper Lee tried to instruct through her fiction”.(Scottsboro) Black people were always accused by white people of crimes they did not do and the judge will always believe the whites. Blacks were considered criminals, that was one of the main reasons why Lee wrote her book; she felt that things should be changed and blacks should have a voice. Blacks did not feel that they live in their country, they needed help to make their voice heard; some of the white writers helped them to fight for their rights, that was mentioned in the article To Kill a Mockingbird: Two Trials for the Classroom“Both historical and fictional trials express the courage required to stand up for the Constitutional principle providing for equal justice to all under the law.”(Scottsboro) This quote shows that fictional
Mayella vs. Victoria: To Kill A Mockingbird vs. Scottsboro Trial “He couldn’t get us to the chair fast enough.” Haywood Patterson a young black boy accused of raping two young girls named Victoria Price and Ruby Bates said this during his trial. Patterson said this about the judge of the case he was involved in. This was in the Scottsboro trial where a group of black boys was accused of raping the two young girls Victoria and Ruby. This same topic is brought up in the book To Kill A Mockingbird Harper Lee when a young lady named Mayella Ewell accuses a black man named Tom Robinson of raping her.
Leading up to the Civil Rights Movement, the black community was in a constant battle against law enforcement treating them unfair compared to the white community. The Scottsboro Boys and Emmett Till’s cases were one of the many times that the legal system showed to be unfair to blacks. In the book To Kill A Mockingbird, the law enforcement and community were very racist against blacks and believed all blacks were criminals. In the story, Atticus Finch, who is a lawyer gets put into a very difficult situation and decides to defend a black man, who went by the name of Tom Robinson.
The 1900’s was a significant era for blacks, while a lot of laws were reformed and our rights were instated with distinct clarity, much loss was suffered to accomplish this. Two examples of such loss are the trial of Tom Robinson in the novel ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’, and the trial of Scottsboro Boy. One a tale and one a tragedy, but both depict the inequity that was that justice system of the 1900s. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Tom Robinson, is being tried for the rape of Mayella Ewell, daughter of Bob Ewell. In the trial of the Scottsboro boys, nine young black man were wrongfully incarcerated.
In Harper Lee's novel "To Kill A Mockingbird", the characters face adversity that develop controversial themes. Lee's application of racism is immensely represented. Al Sharpton radio host, and minister once said, “We have defeated Jim Crow, but now we have to deal with his son, James Crow Jr., esquire.” (cite) He then goes on to say that his “son” is smarter, slicker, and more cunning than him. This metaphor describes that even though the Jim Crow Laws have been ratified, there is a new racial discrimination in America that is growing and is harder to defeat than the last. The Jim Crow Laws were the set of laws that set the whites and blacks separate from each other in the 1900s, although they have been defeated, America today may be equal lawfully but not on an individual level.
Racism: The belief that all members of a race possess characteristics or abilities exclusive to that race. Another form of prejudice, and where the word: stereotype belongs. One example of racism in the modern day is Donald Trump. He believes that all Muslims are evil and want to kill us, or that all Mexicans are no good rapists.
From the crime to the trial, there are parallels between the crimes and trials. On March 25, 1931, a freight train was stopped in Paint Rock, a tiny community in northern Alabama, and nine young African American men who had been riding the rails were arrested. Two white women, Ruby Bates and Victoria Price, descended from the freight cars, and accused the men of raping them on the train. As a result, the accused men were taken to the Scottsboro jail.

Racism in America Racism can be defined as a major problem in United States history, and can be dated back to the 1400’s. Racism can be viewed and defined in many ways, but most accurately is seen as the state of characterizing an individual based on his race, and or believing that one race is superior to another (Shah) . Racism is as big of a problem in the USA as anyone can think, starting way back to when the country had just began to form, when Europeans started settling into the 13 original colonies (Shah). Ever since then, it seems that the problem has only been on the rise, rather than the opposite. Racism has always been a major issue, although hundreds of years have passed since the birth of racism, the problem just seems to never go away.
One of the main themes of the novel is Racism. During the time of depression, racism and poverty were a common issue. People with a dark skin tone, i.e the African- Americans were seen as derogatory and treated like dirt. Harper Lee depicts it in a very realistic way.
