John Dickinson has been an enigma for most historians of the American Revolutionary period, who have had a challenging time reconciling his role as the “penman” of the American Revolution with his refusal to sign the Declaration of Independence . The other colonists signed the bill and they played a noteworthy part in the history of the birthing of the United Colonies (United States) that cannot be forgotten. Jefferson 's draft constitution for the state of Virginia forbade the importation of slaves, and his draft of the Declaration of Independence-written at a time when he himself had inherited about 200 slaves-included a paragraph condemning the British king for introducing slavery into the colonies and continuing the slave trade ”. The first draft of the Declaration of Independence was not successful because of it included the slaves; there was a second draft that excluded the American slaves and it passed. Many colonists were slave owners and Thomas Jefferson were in that number as well. Thus, most of the slaves that Jefferson owned during his life came to him through inheritance or were born into slavery at Monticello. He did, however, purchase some slaves, including at least eight whom he bought during his presidency. Twenty-five of Jefferson 's slaves were household servants. The remaining slaves were agricultural laborers, though for a while they also worked as weavers and as industrial workers in Jefferson 's nail factory . The first colonist used Christian standards to birth and governed this wonderful nation. The expressions of the late John Adam communicate it with awesome persuasive and he states, “The highest glory of the American Revolution was this: it connected in one indissoluble bond the principles of civil government with the principles of Christianity” . After the American Revolution, the formation of a new government was precedent. Federalists were afraid of disorder, anarchy, and chaos; the unchecked power of the masses, and sought for the constitution to create a government distant from popular passions. On the other hand, antifederalists were more concerned about the dangers of concentrated power. Equally, the antifederalists opposed the constitution because of the obstacles between the people and the exercised power, which is why federalists supported it. Hamilton was the Leader of the federalist party while Jefferson was the leader of the Republican party.
July 4th, 1776, the United States declared its independence from Great Britain through the Declaration of Independence. Before long, series of documents, alongside the declaration, were constructed to rectify the conflict that had long existed between authority and liberty. The documents strived to resolve the tension by establishing a strong, representative government. The government would possess enough power to make decisive changes while also protecting and preserving the liberty of the people.
It would have been difficult to understand what the colonies and the British were going through during the revolution. I understand why people, such as, John Dickinson were conflicted when it came to American independence. To add to your reasons why Dickinson felt the way he did towards American independence, Dickinson felt the best thing for the colonies was to form an alliance with Great Britain. He felt one day “provinces would rise up against provinces and cities against cities,” to fight a common enemy, which would result the colonies to resort back to Britain, even though we once rejected them. In addition, he felt that separating us would give us dependence and not independence.

Declaration of Independence Precis Thomas Jefferson in his historical document, The Declaration of Independence (1776), asserts that the colonies should break free from Britain’s tyranny. Jefferson supports his assertion through the use of anaphora, parallel structure, imagery, emotional appeal to patriotism, and logical appeal to the colonist’s basic rights. Jefferson’s purpose is to advocate for the separation of Britain and the colonies in order to escape the British tyranny that King George imposes on the American colonists. Wood also expressed that it is not to be for the people, but rather of the people.
On June 7, 1776, Richard Henry Lee had announced a motion to Congress to proclaim independence. John Adams and Benjamin Franklin reviewed Jefferson’s draft of the declaration; and they had conserved its imaginative form, but struck passages that were more than likely to meet disagreement or skepticism, particularly the passages that blamed King George III for the intercontinental slave trade and all of those who blamed the British people rather than their own government. The British Government tried its best to terminate the Declaration of Independence as an insignificant document by the unhappy colonists. The British officers hired publicists to highlight the Declaration’s faults. The most significant diplomatic result that came out of the event was to agree on respect for the United States by friendly foreign
