Rebecca Nichols Alonzo, author of “The Devil in Pew Number Seven”, spent part of her childhood just seven miles from my home. The years that she endured in Sellerstown, NC were filled with threats, fear, violence, and eventually death. Her father, Robert Nichols, was a pastor and moved the family to the small community in 1969. Harassing phone calls, threatening letters, and events became part of their life. After looking through the list of books, I chose “The Devil in Pew Number Seven” because of the connection it has to Columbus County. In 1969 Robert and Ramona Nichols moved to the small community of Sellerstown, North Carolina. They had hopes and plans to build a family and life in this wonderful town while doing the work that the …show more content…
Watts, the man behind all the the hatred, wasn’t use to making decisions as a group; he made decisions as it was best for him. Mr. Watts didn’t like the fact that Mr. Nichols now made the decisions for the church. He was used to making them. When all of the threats and violence started Pastor Nichols said, “When the Lord gets ready for me to leave this church, He won’t send the message by the devil”. I really liked this quote because it allowed me to see Mr. Nichols not just as a pastor but also as a man who wouldn’t be forced from his home. A man of courage at all costs. Another quote that I liked and felt was “powerful” and I felt really pushed Mr. Watts to his breaking point was, “They are not Christian people. I know who they are. I know they are violent, mean-spirited people. I will only leave this church if it is the Lord’s will. And if it is the enemy’s will for us to leave, then it is God’s will for us to stay”. My favorite quote from the book was, “forgiveness is the language to heaven”. I think this is one of the most important quotes of the book because even though Mr. Watts did terrible things to the Nichols family they still forgave him because it was the right thing to do. All three of these quotes can be applied to life today. People face persecution of different types every single day. They have to be brave, strong, and committed to their calling to withstand the threats and possible danger that they may face in today’s society. We also have to be willing to forgive those who have done us wrong, no matter how terrible the crime. Holding on to hatred and resentment will only make us a prisoner in our own life. This is what I believe Rebecca Nichols Alfonzo knew and how her parents raised her. She forgave the man behind the threats and violence and the man who pulled the trigger that killed her mother, Harris
Jonathan Edwards’s “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” was a sermon that was given during the year of 1741 in the time of The Great Awakening. Seeing that The Great Awakening was an evangelistic movement, Edwards used this speech to preach to people able God and Hell. In this speech, Jonathon described characteristics of a person who did not obey the rules and God and said that these types of people would go to Hell. He made Hell sound so terrible that it was like the people could not comprehend the thought of what Hell was like. With me being a Southern Baptist, I agree with the points Edwards preaches about.
I felt like Mr. Perkins was a luck man who lived a life that many dreamed of, the American dream. I truly believe he is an intelligent man who was not scared of taking risks instead he followed in what he believed and wanted. By the way this project of interviewing someone that does not look like me was very interesting and wired at the same time just because they have a different way of living
It is 1741. The Enlightenment is spreading worldwide. The puritan people are leaving God. Johnathan Edwards gives a sermon on July 8th , 1741, trying to convince his fellow Puritan people to come back to God. He is going to try and accomplish this by giving his famous sermon, "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God '.
What part of the chapter, if any, did you find most convincing? Why? [The more specific you are in your reference, the better.] I found convincing that when the professor asked his students to read the Nazi theology. The professor wanted them to understand how people can misinterpret the bible and bend the words to be able to use them as weapons against other religions.
The quotes show how this novel is based on the idea that wars hurt the
The men on the hills didn’t have to be murderers. The men in the city didn’t have to lower themselves to fight their attackers. She didn't have to be filled with hatred. ”(22) This quote is important because it shows that the death and destruction could have been prevented if the circumstances around her were different, yet destructive forces from people of power were used to lower citizens and permit violence and death through hatred.
In 1920, the Robinsons took the rail to Pasadena, California and never looked back. With the help of a welfare agency, the Robinson family purchased a home in a predominantly white neighborhood.
Harper Lee said a very inspirational quote in 1960. She said, “Before I can live with other folks, I have to live with myself. The one thing that doesn’t abide by majority rule is a person’s conscience. ”This quote became famous through her novel, To Kill a Mockingbird. She wanted this quote to inform people around the world of a common problem.
In books there is a theme, but in Dr.Suess books there are life lessons throughout it. ¨Why fit in when you were born to stand out. " This means it is okay to be different. Another quotes is,¨Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind do not matter and those who matter do not mind.¨ This quotes means to say what you wanna say and you worry what other people have to say.
Jonathan Edwards’s sermon “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” and Anne Bradstreet’s “Upon the Burning of Our House” seem at first glance quite similar to one another regarding context, however, after taking a closer look, it becomes apparent that there are some substantial differences. These differences cannot be understood without the knowledge of cultural context concerning the Puritan belief system and their lifestyle. “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” was written with the sole purpose of scaring and intimidating the people that purtinans believed to be sinners. Edwards’s work contributed to a movement called “The Great Awakening”. It’s objective was to make the so-called ‘sinners’ aware of their wrongdoings and compel them to repent.
In crafting his highly effective sermon, Edwards utilizes his authority as a man of God and as an interpreter of the scriptures, a logical and direct organization of arguments, and violent imagery to convince his audience of the vengeance of God against man. Jonathan Edwards begins his sermon by quoting
But that just because 1 or 2 people do not like you it does not mean that nobody likes you. Even though there is always going to be someone out there trying to bring you down there is also always gonna be someone out there that is will appreciate you the way you are without having to change a thing. That is why I think that this text does make me think of a moral issue in a different way because it shows that just because people tell you that what the bullies say do not matter and to ignore them you are still allowed to feel sad and angry, but that someone out there will love you and appreciate you the way you are and they will make you feel like a million dollars and love the things that make you different. Another reason why I think this text is a moral piece of literature is because the author is speaking the truth and not making everything seem like a fairy tale and that everyone has a happy ending. He also teaches and encourage to wear your differences with pride.
At the end of the movie, my favorite quote of his was Carpe Diem; seize the day, and due to his lessons, a lot of his students
Martin Luther King Jr quotes: “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” This quote explains that a man’s true colours and personality will be seen only when facing hard times and how the person would act while being put under pressure. Martin Luther King Jr uses the words controversy meaning; when stating an argument that an opposing party or large group of people strongly disagree with, and challenges meaning the hardships faced during the period of time, so that he is specific with what kinds of battles he is talking to the people about. ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ is a very well written book written by Harper Lee which focuses on the
