The media is everywhere, and is nothing more than a plethora of opinions telling us that what is being argued is true and everything else we see and hear is false. Unfortunately, they proved very effective and leads to believe all they say, and alter how we perceive the world around us and ourselves. Body image, for example, is a prime subject the media tells us what is pretty and what is not. By combining different, “good-looking” features of separate people, they drill into people 's heads the “perfect” body,And people will go to great measures to achieve this. Especially in the modeling industry, or models endure extreme workouts to look and feel acceptable. Some even go as far as to starve themselves or necessitate themselves to throw up what they have eaten, that 's developing eating disorders and serious health issues. The Media is a common source that many people continue to use to get important information. Journalists are known for seeking out the truth and making sure the public hears it. As shown by a Pew Research Center study in 2014, “When it comes to getting news about politics and government, liberals and conservatives inhabit different worlds. There is little overlap in the news sources they turn to and trust. And whether discussing politics online or with friends, they are more likely than others to interact with like-minded individuals” (Mitchell et al). This is called selective exposure and involves the theory of cognitive dissonance, where people seek means to rationalize their beliefs by avoiding information that clashes with their existing views (Festinger).
Media does not capture the world the way it is, but rather tends to emphasise and support the values and ideas of those who create the message they want people to hear. These are often changed because of commercial considerations and advertising, which plays a large part in media. This results in the perspective of some to be ignored or showed in negative ways. Ideas and representations about gender have been influenced by the media. In media such as advertisements, newspapers, magazines, popular music, films, and video games, women and girls are more likely to be shown in homes, doing domestic chores (e.g. laundry, cooking, ironing, vacuuming, etc.).

For instance if you open up a magazine there will probably be endless amounts of advertisements of girls selling their body for certain products, or symbolizing themselves for just beauty, instead of their education or self worth. When people vote to elect leaders they often rely on the mass media to persuade them, which sometimes the politicians and media take advantage of this fact. Media can reach out to people by radio, advertising, mailing, pamphlets, television most often these days’ social media. A large amount of money is spent by politicians on media when they are campaigning, just to persuade voters who are unsure. Some politicians use television commercials and sometimes newspaper advertisements to point out the negatives in the opposition party while presenting themselves better. Another way media can influence politics is by deciding what news should be delivered to the people therefore, they chose stories that are most sensational and interesting for the people to hear and ones that can lift their ratings.

The role of American-produced soap operas is big as it affects many teenagers beliefs of typical romantic relationships and what they should strive towards. For example, a popular TV series amongst many teenagers; The Vampire Diaries shows how the strong, good looking, athletic male, will typically date a conventionally attractive, slender, petite girl, which in turn shows how on average, ‘attractive’ people search for someone who more or less matches them.
Mass media is designed for one thing, to get to everybody one way or another. TV, Radio, Newspapers, etc; they all have something to say. Throughout my life I can see how mass media changed my perception of the world. I feel like the more I watch the news the less hope I have for humanity. I feel the news idolizes a lot of bad things that's happening around the world and doesn't talk enough about the good things.
