This short story starts with a description of a run that was made during a practice but he is recreating it in his mind to make it seem like it was in a game. He is recreating the entire play 15 years later while sitting on the same practice field that it had originally happened. In this story Christian wants to go back to time where everything was a simple as just playing football, being with his girlfriend, and going to school. When the Great Depression hit and the economy crashed in 1929, Louise’s father lost everything, including the ink manufacturing company. This meant that Christian was unemployed and out of work, and he had no idea what to do. His father-in-law went through the Depression until 1933, when he blew his brains out because it was all just too much for him. Without having a job, Christian had plenty of time to be with Louise but did not really use it. He and Louise had different interest because Christian never did anything but football and work so he never gained any interests or hobbies.
Christian told Louise, "I don 't want to go to any art galleries. I want to sit here and drink Scotch whisky" (4). While Louise was out learning about life and gaining interests from the art and the plays, Christian was just working. When the economy broke down it was like his entire life ended because he did not know anything else so he ended up becoming an alcoholic. But as in the beginning of the relationship Louise showed compassion and love to him throughout the rough
The main character in the book, “ Knights of the Hill Country”, is Hampton Greene, the star linebacker of the Kennisaw Knights football team. Hampton has two motivating factors throughout the story. One, to give Kennisaw their fifth straight undefeated season and two, to stay out of trouble so he can get a scholarship to the University of Oklahoma. The first motivating factor Hampton has throughout the story is to give the small town of Kennisaw their 5th straight undefeated season. One that she could remember was loading up the old lumber wagon with straw bales from the barn and hooking it up to the pair of horses. After that, they topped the straw bales with comforters from the house and the whole family loaded on to ride to the Christmas concert in town. The Great Depression impacted the Ricke family greatly. It taught Beatrice to “take care of what you got and make the best of it because if you didn 't, you might be in bad shape.” Waking up every morning to do chores such as feeding the cows and chickens and taking care of the garden helped instill a lasting work ethic in Beatrice.
At that moment, things didn't seem so bad, and it was because of a government funded project. Then there is the other side of the coin. For example suppose there was a man or a woman, and all their life they had been a concert piano player, or maybe a stage actor, perhaps a novelist, or even a portrait painter. It is the height of the Great Depression, they

In John Updike’s poem “Ex-Basketball Player” the poet uses literary devices to depict the existing way of life of a once-famous sportsperson. Flick Webb was in before times a gifted athlete on his high school basketball team, and he was commendable of much awe. However, Flick never acquired any other skills to prepare him for a future. Accordingly, he now is locked into an unskilled job and his former glories have pale to all but Flick himself. Updike has created a character that is at this point in time going nowhere and spends most of his time thinking about his former days of glory.
Now he came down to earth. I wanted the glory to last forever” (Dillard 102-19). Here she see’s this older adult with a car, a nice suit going to work, but having put all that aside just so he could chase a group a young kids through the snow and yards till he finally caught them. She see’s that even though he has all these things and is an adult he still has exciting moments in his life, she could also tell from how he ran after them that he had glory days in football as well and that chasing them must have been like playing football again. Her style of writing has a fine mixture between narrative writing and expository writing, she tells us a lot about her story, but she also tells us about the people there and what all happened.
Bissinger emphasizes this point to persuade the readers to understand how detrimental pouring large amounts of money and energy towards the high school football team severely impact the future of all the students in Permian High. The small pond these children are living in disrupts their academic success, and the adults fail to recognize this notion. A teacher of thirty-one years, Jane Franks explains that they are now “deadened to themselves and to the world around them” because of their constant lack of effort in class (133). Bissinger includes her views on the effects of the obsession with football, and how the football players are encouraged to only focus on the sport. Franks describes them as ‘deadened’ to the outside world, further examining how unprepared these young adults are for the real world.
The story takes back in the day during the American great depression and people struggles to live in America. The two main characters in the story are George who is the sharp eyed hard worker and Lennie who is handicapped and has bad control of himself. Lennie doesn’t go along with many people except his partner George. Crooks who works at the same place and his black, which makes thing cheesy for him. Crooks likes reading books alone and he likes to keep his distance from others, which is his way of keeping things calm and not messy.
Outliers: The Story of Success Writing about Reading Defense of Passages In Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell challenges those who assume hard work is the only path to success. “It is not the brightest who succeed. Nor is success simply the sum of decisions and efforts we make on our behalf.” Gladwell states that success can happen through a series of different factors.
In John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men, the era of the Great Depression in the 1930’s is revealed through a simple story of ranch workers who hope to improve their lives. Migrant workers, George and Lennie, have a friendship that is based on trust and protection. The other workers lack the companionship and bond that these two men have. In the novel, the absence and presence of friendship is the motivation for the characters’ actions.
Lonnie helped josh by giving him a ride to find a job to help him get along in the hardship of the depression. The waitress from the restaurant gave Lonnie a number that belonged to a man named Pete Harris, He would have a job for josh at his carnival in baton rouge, Lonnie said “ I can make it a point to get there.” page 79. This quote shows how Lonnie helps josh get his job a the carnival in baton rouge because he is using his own time to help a kid that he isn’t related to and that just makes Lonnie a person with a lot of heart and determination for others.
The great depression made a major impact on the lives of the people that lived through it. One group of people that is often overlooked are children that lived during that time period. When the parents lost their jobs the responsibility the parent once held was put on the children of the families to contribute to the income of the home. Because of this in the great depression “two-fifths of children were employed in part time jobs” (Elder 65). In Glen Elder’s book Children of the Great Depression: Social Change in Life Experience he discusses how the depression affected those children in their later lives.
“I came to a clear conclusion, and it is a universal one: To live, to struggle, to be in love with life--in love with all life holds, joyful or sorrowful--is fulfillment. The fullness of life is open to all of us” (Betty Smith). Betty Smith, born as Elizabeth Lillian Wehner, grew up in Brooklyn, New York as the daughter of poor German immigrants. At the time, child labor was legal and Smith began work at the young age of fourteen to help support her family. Smith’s life in the slums and her experiences during the Great Depression greatly influenced her writing.
Throughout the course of history the Great Depression affected the United States in their economy , it lasted 10 years it was the worst economic downturn in the history of the industrialized world. Lennie and George had numerous of risks in the ranches, they didn't have no one who would help them if they were sick or anything else. The author show us the good relationship of Lennie and George how they care of each other. This shows that George is a good friend but maybe this is not his decision to take care of him he feels sorry for him, I also seen in this text that Lennie receives benefits of George friendship because he is being responsible for him he takes care of him, even though he is a trouble maker George is there for Lennie.
