Dante Hero Essay Pieces of writing are often viewed as a product of their origin time period, even in the modern day it is not uncommon to view our time plane as independent to what preceded as if we were somehow separate from every moment that came before. Instead every aspect of a story is ingrained with the message of millenniums before it, so much so the effect that the present has pales in comparison. This is present throughout Dante’s inferno written by Dante Alighieri as it is not merely a representation of the time period it originated from, rather the present represents the top of an iceberg whose very existence and stature are fully dependent on the times that preceded. This phenomenon of the past is fully present in Dante’s epic hero cycle. Dante’s resurrection reveals to be heavily influenced by the history of humankind. “My guide and I crossed over and began to mount the little known and lightless road to ascend into the shining world again” (Alighieri, 283). Dante is leaving hell to return to the light, the surface. This simple act alone is deeply rooted in the roots of society and very little in the origin time plane. The hero’s journey archetype has appeared in many forms of literature and will most likely continue to do so for as long as long as literature exists. The story of Equality 7-2521 and his journey to find the true value of individuality is one example of this very commonly used archetype. The hero’s journey usually follows the same basic plot. There is a hero with a place to go and a stated reason to go.
The same way, disorder means damnation. In both of the masterpieces we find the same way in conceiving coordinates and juxtaposing politics and religion, empire and church. Analogous is the way to express certain forces of nature, intimate qualities of the spirit, sublimation or degeneration of senses through animals. Dante’s Comedy and the mosaic of Otranto teem with animals and monsters: dogs, wolves, dragons, lions, sphinxes, griffins, centaurs, etc. We find all of these representations in both of the works and with the same meaning, same analogies, and same functions.
Hades sat upon his throne and pondered upon his thoughts. It had taken thousands of years for the god of the Underworld to realize how exceptionally dull the Underworld had become and he had not an idea of what to do. The dark lord had suffered and been victorious many times. As an infant, the king of darkness had been swallowed, and promptly regurgitated, by his own father; found himself saved by his clown of a brother, and had assisted in the defeat of the mighty Titans. The God portrayed by Dante is guilty of many human flaws such as: egotism, injustice and hypocrisy. By arranging Hell to flatter himself, God commit’s the most common sin: egotism. This fault is illustrated in Limbo and on the Gate of Hell. For example, God sends those who never had the chance to worship him to hell. “…neither faithful nor unfaithful to their God,” (Norton 400).
Dante’s Inferno depicts the writer himself traveling through the afterlife with his guide Virgil, and details all the aspects of hell as Dante descends towards the ninth circle. Throughout his journey, he witnesses souls in every circle of hell for the sins they committed in their lifetime, each suffering punishments different based on the specific circle they reside. Not only are the punishments different, but they tend to be perfectly suited to the sin that has been committed, a concept called “Contrapasso”. Furthermore, the inscription on the gates of Hell explicitly states that Hell exists as a result of divine justice; “ll. “ Justice moved my great maker; God eternal / Wrought me: the power and the unsearchably / High wisdom, and the primal love supernal (III.4-6).” Prior to delving into the structure of Hell and how it displays God’s divine justice, one must first familiarize themselves with both the historical context of Dante’s life, along with the beliefs of the medieval church.

In this paper, I will explore the first book, Inferno, on the topic of Hell and how the sinners had a significant impact on Dante’s journey through Hell. In Circle 5: Styx, Canto VIII, Filippo Argenti, a sinner of Wrathful, helped Dante to symbolize to readers his anger towards Black Guelphs, political enemies of the White Guelphs.
A Lust For Power For as long as man ate the forbidden fruit, individuals are poisoned with the need to be superior and the want to exercise their power on those of lesser stature. In Inferno, Dante Alighieri explores different ways in which individuals abuse their power, leading to the conclusion that although some individuals may have the power to use their platform for good or peace, they choose to act selfishly in order to be above others. Dante achieves in conveying this concept through his description of those in the church and in politics. Although one may think that the topic of the abuse of power is only stressed in the eighth circle of Hell, it is actually represented throughout the entire epic poem.
In Inferno, Dante is the main character who is fighting between good and evil, which translates to be the theme of the story. Dante explores deeply the Christian hell and heaven, which includes the immediate Purgatory. This experience makes him cast his allegiance to good and God. The differences between these two stories are depicted when comparing the epic conventions, epic characteristics, and when comparing the various religious backgrounds of the times in which these two stories were written.
