The great depression had affect Canada socially, as population changes occurred, as less immigrants go to canada, and birth rate changes, as well as death rates. Throughout the 1930s, Canada’s population growth reached their lowest point since the 1880s. Canada’s birth rate dropped from 13.1 live births per 1000 people in 1930 to only 9.7 per 1000 people in 1937. The lowest ratio until the 1960s. This affected the nation significantly, as the population decreases, not much children would grow up to work for the nation, thus creating less income and therefore not increasing the nation’s GDP as much as it can. The numbers of immigrants accepted into Canada dropped to less than 12,000 in the 1935 from 169,000 in 1929, thats over 1400% loss in immigrants. The amount of immigrants accepted into Canada never rose above 17,000 for the remainder of the decade. The number of deportations, however, rose from fewer than 2,000 people in 1929 to more than 7,600 in just under four years. In addition to the deportations, approximately 30,000 immigrants were forcibly returned to their original countries over the course of the decade, this was predominately due to illness or unemployment. The number of people that left Canada compared to the people that came to canada, is hardly a percentage. This affects Canada greatly, as people are leaving, therefore taxes gained from the citizens decrease, and productivity of the work force decreases, as more people leave, less people are there to fill their roles in society (Encyclopedia). The dole was a small amount of support the government distributed to the poor and unemployed. The government relief was created for the citizens of Canada, as they were not producing enough income for their family. A typical ration included flour, pork, split peas, corn meal, molasses, and cocoa. Although a relief was created, It provided for only about half of a person’s
How did the great war affect Canada during the 1920s? After the great war Canada suffered from influenza from 1918-1919. The conditions in Canada were also really bad after the war. There were many returning veterans but not all of them returned about 4500 of them did not return from war. The labour union had increased which reflected on the worldwide growth of the union.
The severe economic conditions of the depression brought down and impacted numerous countries including Canada. When Bennett was running for prime minister he had no idea of the economic disasters that would be approaching and was unable to discover or utilize any effective methods to deal with them. During the 1930 election Robert campaigned to combat the aggressive measures of the great depression and when he was elected for the conservative party he immediately distributed $20 million toward helping the unemployed citizens of Canada. Unfortunately, the depression conveyed and produced many problems that no one was capable of adequately handling. Bennett attempted to strengthen Canadian trade by preferential tariffs, but unfortunately it
The great depression was a really hard period of time because there wasn’t many option or programs like now such as employment insurance and welfare. Everyone had their own responses; at the time Mackenzie king wasn’t the most prepared he didn’t take an approach the economy, R.B bennet at that time prime minister believed in that the government out of the economy and everything will work out in the end. Maurice Duplessis was the sixteenth premier of Quebec he believed that a return to traditional values and the rural way of life guaranteed security the union nationale was created during the great depression from 1936 to 1970 with some breaks between. Defferin Pattullo thought the state should stop some actions and help ordinary people with
When the Chinese Immigration Act in 1923 came into place, this meant that new immigrants were not allowed to enter the country if it wasn’t under a special circumstance. This split up new families for newly wed young men, and also slowed the community growth of the Chinese community in Canada when they banned Chinese immigrants from entering Canada. Most Chinese men entering Canada were poor, seeking wealth in the Gold Rush and with the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway. After having to pay the head tax, many immigrants
Canada was too effected by economic depression. Employment was becoming evermore difficult to obtain, resulting in the ever-decreasing wages of the people.
The Great Depression was a worldwide economic downfall starting in 1929 and ending in the late 1930s or early 1940s for different countries. It was the largest and most important economic depression in the 20th century, and is used in the 21st century as a lesson and example of how far the world's economy can fall. The Great Depression desecrated many economies, but one country arguably suffered more than any other was Canada. The Great Depression affected many countries in the world but Canada was one of the major countries that was hit the hardest by the downfall. This book seemed to give a great detail of the time period of the Great Depression and the impact of it. The author, Shlaes seemed very bias toward her opinion as she stated, “all the changes brought by the New Deal meant that the United States seemed a less reliable place” (Shlaes 336). She did not seem to like Roosevelt and the New Deal, but nevertheless, she seemed to give a great detail of the impacts of the Great depression on American life and how it changed their values and also how it impacted the American

The Great Depression was a severe worldwide economic depression that took place during the 1930s. The article by Edwin Gay and pictures compiled by Cary Nelson are both descriptions of how the Great Depression was and the several impacts that it had on the American economy. The range of the great depression is unprecedentedly wide according to Edwin Gay. The great depression was believed to have started from the collapse of the US stock market in 1929. This was shown in a picture as compiled by Cary Nelson
The Great Depression was a major turning point for the United States’s economy because it changed the relationship between the government and the economy. Before the Great Depression, the economy was a Laissez-faire style market where the government had no influence on private party transactions and businesses. After the Stock Market Crash of 1929, the people of the United States sought for reliefs from the government. The Government responded by creating tax reforms, benefiting the stock market, wheat prices, employment, and the number of bank suspensions, and providing comfort for the people. As a result of their disparity, the people put their trust in the government in hopes that they would repair the broken economy.
(Boan, 2006) The experience of the Great Depression in the 1930’s left many in difficult financial situations. (Boan, 2006) Although, provinces helped with relief payments for food, clothing and shelter, medical costs were too much for the budget. (Boan, 2006) Many people were not receiving proper medical care, and for those that were the bills were just too high, as a result, causing death from preventable diseases. (Boan, 2006) Years of depression and war brought cooperation and agreement between the federal and provincial governments: The Green Book Proposal, “introduced a plan for comprehensive social security, including measures to promote full employment, contributory social insurance plans and universal public health insurance”.
Immigration has been and will continue to happen all around the world. There are so many reasons for people who come from different countries and ethnicities to move from country to country. The reasons why these people immigrate is either they are simply forced to, due to violence and hostility or that they are in search of a better life for them, and or their family etc. Canada being rated number one in quality of life has been a goal for people wanting to immigrate. The Immigration and Refugee Protection Act ( IRPA) was established by the Canadian government in the year 2002.
Canada’s fertility rate and aging population are ever-declining, therefore we need a reasonable solution to maintaining a healthy population. We have, in fact, already been facing several social and economic threats to our population, and in order for this to not become a larger issue, we are desperately in need of a solution. The major issue in Canada’s demographic status is the fact that there is a labour shortage, and immigration can be our resolution. This current century, immigration has the biggest impact on Canada’s population growth, so clearly, this policy allows a well-balanced population growth for Canada. While all of the G8 countries have little or no growth at all, Canada boasts the highest growth out of all of them.
The Canadian government did not require substantial information from immigrants who entered the country, which made it easy for resisters to cross the border into Canada. At first, the immigration policy was said to have prohibited the migration of American’s who were military resisters, however, the Canadian policy progressed in a way that allowed Americans to migrate into the country with ease; the new policy opened political opportunities for Americans (Hagan 3). There were approximately 26-32 Canadian aid groups, who helped American resisters into Canada (Kasinsky 30). Americans who were transitioning into Canadians needed to obtain “Land Immigrant Status” (31). In order for immigrants to obtain this status, they were required to have fifty points out of the total one-hundred points, which were earned by a person 's credentials and background information.
