The Harms of Corporal Punishment on Children There is a long on-going conversation on parenting styles and techniques. Many people have written books on the best ways to raise children. One topic that is continually debated and quite controversial is the proper method to discipline children. There are various opinions on what is the correct answer. Research has shown that corporal punishment, spanking, is not the proper method of punishment due to unintentional adverse effects on the child’s behavior. Corporal punishment of children could increase the risk of developing aggressive behaviors later on in life. Spanking is a form of punishment many parents use in the U.S. Corporal punishment was formerly a common practice in prisons, military …show more content…
(2011) pointed out that Gershoff’s meta-analysis in 2002 was a cross-sectional study, therefore the findings cannot claim causation instead they only identify a correlation. The reason many parents are skeptical of the research was not examined in Gershoff (2013), but was explored by Boutwell et al. People who were spanked as children tend to believe that spanking is a good discipline technique (Belsky, 2016, p. 206). A possible cause of skepticism for many people: the majority of the children who are spanked do not have behavioral issues. Boutwell et al. (2011) did not find evidence that fully accounted for the lack of development of behavioral problems and concluded that further research would be needed to determine why some children develop behavioral problems because of corporal punishment and most do not. Boutwell et al. (2011) did find that a person can possess a particular gene, which could make them more susceptible to developing aggressive tendencies in response to corporal …show more content…
Therefore, the lack of development of those issues aids in the human race’s continued survival. Many scientists say that corporal punishment should never be used as a form of discipline. Psychologist believe that spanking communicates to children it is acceptable for adults to hit them. While, spanking does cause instant compliance, it does not cause a long-term change in behavior (Belsky, 2016, p. 206). Corporal punishment can impair the development of prosocial behavior by increasing externalizing behaviors in children with genetic vulnerabilities (Boutwell et al (2011). Thus, promoting the behavior it is meant to prevent. Corporal punishment is not the best technique to use to discipline children because of the inadvertent increased risk of a child developing aggressive behaviors further on development.
My feelings regarding spankings are inappropriate because it models aggressive behavior in young children. 8. Spankings should be administered with care. 9. Corporal punishment is the use of physical force causing pain, but not wounds, as a means of discipline; such as spanking, shaking, slapping hands and etc.
The question is regarding the ECLS (Early Childhood Longitudinal Study) data that was collected through children and their parents through the U.S. Department of Education in the late 1990’s. The study consisted of twenty thousand children from kindergarten through fifth grade across the country. (Levitt, Dubner 2005) The survey took into account everything from race, gender and family structure to whether or not the parents spank their children,
In her text, No Spanking, No Time Out, No Problem, Khazan states that, “The way to get rid of a child’s negative behavior is not punishment.” (Khazan). This quote insinuates that the author works to tell people, specifically parents, that punishing children is not the way to get them to comply and behave. From here, Khazan uses evidence from a personal interview with child psychologist, Alan Kazdin. Kazdin has and provides a considerable amount of evidence from his own experiences and his own studies, making him a pretty reliable first-hand source.
A big issue today is spanking a child as a form of punishment, society says this is very wrong and many bad things can lead from it. Many families are against it because it in increases the risk that kids will develop emotional and behavioral problems. Everyone believes that how you treat your child at a young age significantly affects their behavior. Parents do it this though because they see a quick change in the child’s behavior. Society sees spanking as a form of abuse and that it is bad.
Secondly, UN report on violence against children was used to argue against reasonable spanking because of its social effects to the child. In this context, spanking is widely seen as unethical method of punishment because
Spanking, is it really child abuse or a form of discipline for your children. Many people are misled with the term spanking and think that spanking is abuse because you are hurting your child, however that is not the case; the term spanking is the act of slapping, especially on the buttocks as a punishment for children. Abuse have a completely different definition it is use to bad effect or for a bad purpose; misuse. Spanking is a way of discipline used to better your child for the future, to make them understand that there are consequences to their actions and disobediences. Spanking can also be used to stop kids from doing something shouldn’t be doing or stopping them from doing something dangerous that can potentially harm them.
Spanking is good for the mind because it teaches children. The author also states that a study shows that people who are spanked perform better at school and is most likely to want to college than their peers who had never been physically disciplined. Also stated in the article, research lack much info because it was difficult to find subjects who had never been spanked. In the study that was conducted it shows that results that others do not show because it involved 2600 individuals that never been spanked. It was difficult in more traditional time to find subjects.
Introduction Corporal Punishment is seen as a corrective process where a person in authority such as teacher, principal, or even a parent uses force such as smacking, punching, kicking, spanking, etc to correct being disobedient. Literature Review Corporal punishment remains a highly controversial topic in the United States today, mainly because it usually involves the use of physical contact to “correct” disciplinary issues. (Essex) The U.S. Supreme Court ruling of the Ingraham v. Wright that corporal punishment did not violate constitution rights. Leaving the decision up to states and school districts to enforce it.
In the article Grogan-Kaylor states “The upshot of the study is that spanking increases the likelihood of a wide variety of undesired outcomes for children. Spanking thus does the opposite of what parents usually want it to do.” Not only did Gershoff and Grogan-Kaylor test on children but also on long-term effects among adults who were also spanked as a child. This showed that the more they were spanked, the more likely they experienced mental health problems or behavior problems. As many as 80 percent of parents around the world spank their children according to a 2014 UNICEF
Would you say that spanking is appropriate? Many people say yes, because it has been used as a means of punishment for so long; however, more and more people are beginning to realize that corporal punishment may lead to even more problems in the future. Many factors can contribute to your opinion on spanking, such as your ethnic group and religion. For example, African Americans and people who translate the bible literally are more likely to use spanking as a means of punishment (206). There are many good arguments for both sides; however, it is clear that spanking is not necessary and can be avoided completely More people in the United States are beginning to realize how ineffective and dangerous spanking is.
Corporal punishment was used as a form of discipline in schools almost 30 years ago, negatively impacting students. Methods of discipline used in schools today include detention, suspension and
For many, spanking a kid is deemed to be one of the best ways to raise a kid. Since the previous generations, also known as the older generations were raised this mode, many accredit that applying the almost exact same method on their kids can lead these youngsters to learn and grow straight, therefore expecting that a spanked kid will aftermath in a prospective society with future gracefully informed and well educated adults. However, corporal punishments aren’t indeed the appropriate way neither the best solution to deal with the misbehavior of a little bairn. Spanking a kid, whether it’s with bare hands or a flat object, may lead some kids to actually rebel against their family.
Many people think that the reason for this is easily described as “if you hold the reins too tight, the horse will buck.” Over punishing a child can be a bad thing, it will make the child want to retaliate more so than if one were to cut a little slack. However, under punishing a child can be bad as well, not teaching a child right from wrong can majorly increase the odds of the child doing the wrong thing. Reasons that parents give for spanking their children are to make children listen better, and to encourage better behavior, especially to put a stop to children's aggressive behaviors. Research shows, however, that spanking, or indeed any form of physical punishment, tends to have the opposite effect.
Physically punishing children can affect the child in the long term rather than short term, which is why many parents that physically punish their kids do not think that it is unethical. The long term affects to the children’s mental health is alarming as Time magazine stated that “The risk of depression alone was 1.4 times greater, which was the same rate for anxiety” (Rochman, 2012) also some of the other mental illnesses that are correlated with the use of physical punishment are mood and anxiety disorders, substance/alcohol abuse which can all hinder the lives of children maturing. Corporal punishment also imbeds anger into the child making them exhibit aggressive behaviors towards others in the article the case against spanking “researchers interviewed parents and children age 3 to 7 from more than 100 families. Children who were physically punished were more likely to endorse hitting as a means of resolving their conflicts with peers and siblings” (Smith, 2012, Pg. 60) this only proves that children will inherit their parent’s aggressive attitudes. The blame should be placed on parents as they are only contributing to a negative lifestyle for the growing
