The Crucible by Arthur Miller has many lessons to learn from. One of The major lesson I thought that is important is honesty. The accusations throughout the story were built on lies from those trying to protect their own name, and putting the town into confusion. Nobody in Salem, Massachusetts felt like they could trust anymore, after all of the false allegations made. If Three characters in the story would have been honest from the beginning, the town would not have been in such confusion. If Abigail, John, and Elizabeth would have been honest to begin with then many innocent people would not have lost their lives and left the town in despair. Abigail Williams lied to many people a during the entire story. In Act 1, Abigail made Reverend Parris believe that she was dismissed from working for the Proctors was due to the fact that “She (Elizabeth) hates me, uncle, she must, for I would not be her slave. It’s a bitter woman, a lying, cold, sniveling woman, and I will not work for such a woman!” (Miller, 140). In this statement, the reality is that Abigail claims “There be no blush about my …show more content…
John did tell the truth, about him and Abigail having an affair, to his wife Elizabeth. When Elizabeth suggests “I think you much tell him (Hale), John.” John did not want to tell the truth to Hale of the affair. When John admits to committing adultery to the court, nobody believes him because he waited so long the court thought it was just an attempt to save himself and Elizabeth from the charges they face. If John, Abigail, and Elizabeth would have been honest instead of lying and keeping secrets, many lives could have been saved. They lied for different reasons, Abigail for greed and her own twisted dreams, John and Elizabeth for keep John's name clean. The lying led to many deaths, and much confusion. I think Arthur Miller was trying to tell us through The Crucible that you should always be honest even if it hurts you or
I have no proof for it. " Proctor never reveals an honest confession until now. He admits to Elizabeth he cheated on her which she suspected during the time. Elizabeth pleads with John to tell the truth at court to stop the innocent deaths of people and turn in the real problem- Abigail. By going to the court with hard proof, John's crime of adultery goes public.
However, this is inaccurate because he avoids Abigail and risks everything for his wife. Elizabeth was taken by the court because she was accused for being a witch, but John knows she is a good women and fights for her. Elizabeth is worth the trouble of going to the court and defying the government. It is honorable for a husband to protect his wife after all they are family. John is talking to the court and tell the court a secret that no one knows about, John’s reputation is on the line.
The Crucible is a story written in 1952 and is a story filled with lies and betrayal. Characters are constantly trying to save themselves from the cruel death of taking responsibility for their actions. While reading the story, I thought my favorite character was completely underrated. Elizabeth Proctor is good, moral, upright, composed and steadfast. Elizabeth’s hatred for Abigail Williams, for the affair with her husband John Proctor is understandable.
The Ring Leader The Crucible written by Arthur Miller has a variety of characters, one of the more dominant characters, named Abigail Williams, was behind a series of unfortunate events. Abigail lied on numerous occasions, manipulated others, and sent many to their deaths. Abigail’s important character traits were being dishonest, manipulating others, and having a bold attitude.
In The crucible, by Arthur Miller characters can be categorised into the following groups; lacking integrity at all times (not even attempting to do the right thing), struggling with integrity (have good intentions but struggle to keep doing the right thing when under pressure) and showing integrity at all times (even when threatened with death). Three characters that fall under these respective categories are Abigail Williams, John Proctor and Rebecca Nurse. It is evident that Abigail has relinquised integrity for personal interests because throughout the play she lies and tries to take advantage of the situation. She enjoys the power that she has as the main "Accuser". She is the one that started t and took advantage he hysteria; even though she knew that the witchcraft allegations were false (technically, she was actually the one that commited witchcraft under Puritan law because she, along with several other girls drank blood in an attempt to conjure Ruth,s
She is a cold, sniveling woman, and you bend to her! Let her turn you like a-”(151) which is a great example on how Abigail was vindictive and would stretch the truth and everyone would believe everything she says; everyone in that time was very gullible even though they knew deep down that Elizabeth Proctor was innocent. Abigail planned on ruining Elizabeth’s
Benjamin Franklin, one of the Founding Fathers of the United States, once said, “It takes many good deeds to build up a good reputation, and only one bad one to lose it.” In The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, there are many people who are concerned with their standing in the village of Salem. The Crucible is about how the Salem witch trials of 1692 came to be and how it spiraled out of control. Reputation, which is a belief that many people in Salem are concerned with, is the cause of these events. Reputation is to blame for the Salem witch trials because Deputy Governor Danforth, a judge in the Massachusetts court, allows the girls to keep telling lies to keep his authority as a stern judge.
And mark this. Let either of you breathe a word, or the edge of a word, about the other things, and I will come to you in the black of some terrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you” (317). Abigail is trying to convince herself that this is all she did with the girls even though, in reality, she knows they did much more. She does this in order to make herself feel less guilt towards the situation. She knows the trouble she will get into so she chooses to
The Crucible was written in 1952 by Arthur Miller, the play delivers many messages and carries many themes throughout. Nearly every character in the play is put to the test to display an act of courage, weakness, or truth. Some characters lack these traits and never learn to have courage or display honesty. However, most characters are very courageous and demonstrate these acts throughout the whole play. Overall the theme of the The Crucible boils down to being about honesty, weakness, and courage.
People in the Crucible thought he was an honorable man and that no honorable man will ever sin. So when John and Abigail meet each other, Abigail flirts with John, and John say, “No, no, Abby. That’s done with.” So we know he has committed adultery against his wife, Elizabeth Proctor, with Abigail Williams and that gives us a bad image of John sinning and commiting adultery with Abigail and doesn’t really respect his wife.
Abigail exclaims of her passion and love for God when in reality she is filled with sin and lust. Opportunity was given for honesty throughout The Crucible of which
Lying is the most committed sin. Everyday people lie whether small or big. Every human knows that lying should not be exercised, but sometimes, in certain situations, lying is necessary due to the consequences of telling the truth. In the Bible, James 3:8, quoted is “But no human being can tame the tongue, it is a relentless evil, full of deadly poison.”
Also, in attempt to tell the truth about Abigail, John Proctor admits to cheating on his wife with Abigail, but Elizabeth lets her fear assist her in lying. John Proctor tells everyone in the court, previous to Elizabeth arriving, “she [has] never lied” (III.891.). With everyone now knowing that she does not lie, it makes her trustworthy and believable. Deputy Danforth then brings Elizabeth in to confirm what
As time has passed, throughout history, during different periods of time there are parallels. There are three eras that we are focussed on, where there are three types of people during each era. The three different eras that we’re focusing on, are The Salem Witch Trials (1600s), The McCarthy Era (1950s), and Today (2000s); the three types of people are the people who are the reasons why there’s accusations towards the accused, the accused, and finally the accusers. In The Crucible, or during the Salem Witch Trials, the person that’s the reason why characters were accused is John Proctor. The accuser in the play, who decides to point fingers at everyone, is Abigail Williams.
(Miller 12). This quote shows how Abigail has changed and what she’d do if she was confronted with such a situation. She made the decision quickly and opted to only save herself. Over the course of the book it gets represented pretty well that she is capable of doing everything to hold up her reputation: she wants to be a saint. Every decision she makes is like a little test that shows what kind of person and friend she is.
