A perception is a thought, belief, or opinion, often held by many people and based on appearances, and media gives people the ability choose how things appear. For both consumers and topics, unknowingly forming opinions based on information displayed in a biased manner is not only bad, but also, in some cases dangerous. Media has evolved over the years to become a powerful force that helps drive our perceptions about nearly every person, place, thing, and even events that have occured, are in progress, or will be taking place. When an individual consumes media, they are likely consuming some form of a person’s biased opinion and this impacts their own perceptions. Thankfully, there are many telltale signs of when bias is present in some form. Serial, a podcast created by Sarah Koenig about a closed murder case from 1999 where Adnan Syed, the victim Hae Min Lee’s ex-boyfriend, …show more content…
The presence of bias in media is both unfair to multiple parties and dangerous. This is unavoidable as everyone will form their own opinions as time goes by and they grow up in separate environments and are exposed to different things. Language is a wonderful thing, and it allows information to be passed on with or without forms of bias. What a person’s perception is based on can be heavily affected by how this information is passed and this can be a very bad thing. If one know how bias is displayed in media and distorts what is known they will be better informed overall. This eliminates the danger of consuming biased media. Facts are the most trustworthy things in existence, and the people cannot but must trust their beliefs even if they are formed as a result of bias, so everyone should sift the truths through the media no matter the platform, year, or
Serial, a thrilling investigative journalism podcast by Sarah Koenig and Julie Snyder, is about the Baltimore, Maryland murder, of Hae Min Lee in 1999. Hae Min Lee was a popular high school senior at Woodlawn High School. She disappeared after school on January 13th, 1999, and six weeks later her ex-boyfriend, Adnan Syed, was arrested for her murder. Serial is a true-crime podcast narrated by Sarah Koenig. In this podcast, Koenig goes through the 1999 murder of Hae Min Lee, and whether Adnan Syed, Lee’s ex-boyfriend who was convicted of the crime, is guilty of Lee’s murder. As she narrates the podcast, Koenig presents evidence to support both views and offers her opinions as she navigates through the evidence. In the podcast, Koenig’s narration is clearly biased toward Adnan Syed’s innocence. In the podcast, Koenig shows a clear bias towards Adnan Syed’s innocence, as she did not accurately portray Asia McClain’s letters, did not fully evaluate the other potential suspects, did not objectively evaluate Jay Wilds’ witness statement, and had outside influence.
Don’t judge a book by it’s cover, they say. We don’t control the thoughts people make on us. Who knows if what the media is saying is true, nobody, only they know. We believe everything the media says. In the article, “Media Bias Comes From Viewers Like You”, the author Tyler Cowen says the media advertises us something
Serial is a podcast that first premiered in 2014 and quickly became a cultural phenomenon. The podcast, produced by Sarah Koenig, is a spin-off of the radio program This American Life and tells the story of a 1999 murder case in Baltimore, Maryland. The story is told through a series of episodes, each one delving deeper into the case and the investigation. The podcast uses a variety of rhetorical devices to create suspense and engage the audience.
Serial is a Podcast that investigates a true-life story over a series of twelve episodes. The Podcast takes a look at the fifteen year old murder case of Hae Min Lee. Adnan Syed, Hae’s ex-boyfriend was the main suspect and later found guilty of murder for Hae Min Lee’s death and sentenced to life in prison. Serial is hosted by Sarah Koenig an American journalist, public radio personality, and one of the producers of the radio program “This American Life”. The Serial Podcast uses rhetorical devices to appeal to its primary audience by using ethos to establish credibility, pathos to create an emotional response within the audience, and logos to support and poke holes in the murder case.
Sarah Koening is the host of the podcast Serial, a story that follows the murder of teenage Hae Min Lee and her alleged murderer Adnan Syed. Koening put herself out into the world with the serial podcast in 2014, and once the podcast was finished it ended up being worth twenty-five million dollars. Even though Sarah deliberately says throughout the podcast that she is pursuing this case for her own curious reasons, she really wants us to listen for her own personal gain. She demonstrates this want for fame, money, and views by effectively making the case a narrative rather than an expositive story, through her author's craft and use of rhetorical devices, and her constant use of cliffhangers at the end of each episode.
Anya Schultz, the author of a review titled Serial: A Captivating New Podcast, works to show how multiple narratives and stories can be manipulated and sometimes vastly misinterpreted. Serial, an intriguing, enthralling podcast hosted by Sarah Koenig, tells the story of Hae Min Lee, a young, beautiful, high school senior who was murdered in 1999. Lee 's case, as Koenig and Schultz point out, has a few missing pieces of information that were never accounted for. For example, how did the jury come to the conclusion that Lee 's ex-boyfriend, Adnan Syed, was truly guilty? Why did Syed 's lawyer forget to mention the letter from his acquaintance Asia McClain that could have polished his alibi?
Serial is a podcast created by Sarah Koenig. Serial is based on the court case of a Adnan Syed, this podcast discusses important information on whether or not Adnan is guilty or innocent of committing murder. The case against Adnan is very murky. People believe that Adnan should not have been tried for the tiny amount of evidence they had against him, which was a friends story, and cell phone records.
Murrow Political Bias in media is one of the most rampant examples of bias in terms of its influence on mindsets of people. The statement above by Edward R. Murrow makes total sense in today’s world. Political Bias is at its peak during elections. Public has to vote for candidates and much information about the candidates comes from media. Media, during these times, takes this advantage.
Finally, I would like to look at a podcast called Serial. The first season of Serial follows the murder of a high school senior Hae Min Lee in 1999. After searching for six weeks, her body is found buried in the local park. Her ex-boyfriend, Adnan, is arrested and charged with her murder. However, Sarah Koenig, host of Serial, believes there is something fishy about the case from the start.
In America, Media bias is everywhere, in the United States all the information that an average American received through everyday sources, the news was most likely processed through the media and told through a biased point of view, when the media gets their hands on news if it is important then it probably won’t be talked about or downplayed no matter the source like in the newspaper, radio, television, movies, as well as other outlets that the media uses, the media only seems to share the news that they find interesting, even then the media would most likely have changed the story, in what they say is just tweaked news, what actually happened and what really happened would be two different stories, also the story would be told from one person
Embracing diversity in the media is important because it will shed light on the importance of protecting against racial stereotyping. Racial stereotyping is a well know problem that all minorities have faced. Racial stereotyping is when a person has preconceived notions on a person because they are of a certain race. A great deal of stereotyping stems from the media’s lack of diversity that has casted stereotypes towards minorities.
When thinking of the media you think they are reporting the appropriate and accurate information not based on any personal opinions and feelings. Also one would not think the media would be reporting based on one side of politics or the other. The media is extremely biased when it comes to politics and news. While some of the media is conservative-biased I believe the mass media is liberal-biased. Majority of media outlets are liberal companies, media personnel and journalists will identify themselves as democrats and liberals more so than republicans or conservatives and lastly the left side (liberals) of the mass media is persuasive on what information to report.
Mass media can have an effect on a person perception. It can change the way a person thinks or acts toward other people. Watching a particular movie or a television show can allow people to create assumptions about a certain group of people. Stereotypes are shown through the media in race, gender and social classes (Croteau 192). The people from the Middle East are one particular example of a race that is that is depicted in a negative light.
Bias is defined as being prejudice in favor of or against one thing, person, or group compared with another, usually in a way considered to be unfair. Americans experience some sort of bias every day, however, media bias is likely the most prevalent. Media can be biased towards liberals, conservatives, or any other political leaning. According to University of Oklahoma Professor, Keith Gaddie, the mainstream media mostly suffers from liberal bias - which is usually hostile toward conservative candidates and causes. Media bias can misinform, exaggerate truths, and cause confusion during voting season.
