Internet plays a major role in modern day society being used for shopping, gaming, social media, research, reading and many other things. It’s an online track to connect people all around the world, allowing ideas and knowledge to be shared in the blink of an eye. Basically the internet is just a treasure chest full of delightful, harmful, hilarious, sensitive and private information. Privacy is an important matter to all people, especially in the digital age where 79% of Americans shop online. It might make a person 's skin crawl to comprehend that a government agent is creeping through their search or purchase history. So government on all levels, local, state, and federal, should not engage monitoring basic internet activity such as shopping, …show more content…
For the sake of the security in America, the federal government monitor possible threats thoroughly. History has proven that the use of internet monitoring the FBI, has prevented several threats: scams, terrorism, and fraud schemes. A recent example is of a man named David Wright, who was arrested in October 2017 for conspiring with others to carry out a deadly attack on American soil. Wright got busted due to him conducting online research on various weapons and deadly bomb making materials. In this instance no one got hurt due to incompetence by Wright, giving off many red flags warning hints of a transgression. However most malicious people aren’t bold enough like him to search: “How to start a secret militia in the United States.” Thankfully, the federal government seems to have a reliable tracking system based off suspicious activity and keywords that prove to be helpful to prevent terrorist …show more content…
Big cities could use the internet monitoring to prevent gang violence. Cities like Chicago, where a February 2017 reports show a boost in the homicide rate. The blame is placed on a poorly operated police force which allowed around 1,700 or more deaths occur in Chicago between 2016 and 2017. The monitoring of criminals online activity for shady actions, might reap benefits of getting better detailed information about gang hang out spots or drive by shooting locations. Such crucial information could prevent, violence, death, robbery and drug deals before they even start. Creating a tougher environment for gangs to operate allows conditions safer for everyone in the community. Plans of doing crime and carrying out attacks are forming everyday, so it is very possible that soon the government will need to tighten up it’s internet moderation. Hopefully, the federal government doesn’t over step its power and abuse it to spy on average people. Possibly having the government destroy the folly from around the internet would be national outrage. So the government should stay on the path of monitoring the internet only for those who seem shady. Actions such as internet monterdation being used as a tool to protect is proving imperative to human progression in our digital
Because technology is continually growing, new laws are being passed regarding technology and confidentiality. This article questions the “invasive” internet searches and looks for a constitutional answer. As of now, no electronic device can be confiscated and searched without a warrant. This could prove to be beneficial for Arnie. If he was to report Mr. Bowen’s suspicious data to the police, they would be able to obtain a warrant to officially search Mr. Bowen’s computer.
All the tools we have are awful’” (147). That is the problem with digital security. The average stereotypical lazy American does not want to be inconvenienced, which is why the government can access almost anything we put online. Our online lives are like an elementary school girl’s diary that doesn’t have a key and is hidden under her pillow, which is not secretive at all.
Take social media for an example; according to brennacenter.org, "Social media has become a significant source of information for U.S. law enforcement and intelligence agencies for purposes ranging from
According to the BBC, it has become known that the NSA was responsible in the massive surveillance of millions of ordinary Americans through the PRISM progra,, not just those who have suspected links to terrorism. Companies such as Facebook, Google, Microsoft, and Yahoo routinely provided a back door for the NSA to tap into their servers and track online communications (Document 1). This article was released about two years after the leaks when the debates over the future of the PATRIOT Act started to intensify. The National Security Agency strong armed these firms into giving up clients’ private data. No one stood in their way because the NSA had the full backing of the blinded Congress.
In other words, they are collecting a lot of data from our phone conversations, emails, and social networking communications every single day. As the article states, it says that when Congress passed the Patriot Act, it expanded federal officials’ powers to keep tabs on most of our personal information. Not only are they intercepting emails, but they are also tracking credit card use, cell phone call, and car travel. This may seem a bit invasive, but a survey shows that about ⅔ of Americans are willing to put up with the personal impositions in order to prevent
"The first amendment, which gives people the freedom of religion, press, and speech, is something taken for granted by Americans. Throughout history, free speech has been both limited and stretched by the government. The first amendment, which gives people the freedom of religion, press, and speech, is something taken for granted by Americans. Thus, the government should have the ability to monitor and control the government, but only to the extent of protecting the country against potential threats.
Anthem is a novel by Ayn Rand about the ban of the idea of a single person existing. Instead, the idea was that the entire society was one person. There was a strict list of taboo words and things that weren't allowed in this community. I've been given one modern thing that “has been banned.” Use of the internet.
Many attempts were made with limited success but the Kefauver Committee was one of the first major groups that helped start the investigation of organized crime. Eventually, the need for more research grew and President Reagon created the President’s Commission to increase their knowledge of organized crime by developing “a contingency model that highlighted levels of involvement of members and nonmembers” (Schram & Tibbetts, 2021, p.369). By helping to identify criminal groups, protectors, specialized support, user support, and social support, policies could be made to deter crime. While the change in time creates a new need for investigation of how crime operates, especially with cyber crimes, it allows for the government to target specific areas, doing so resulting in other areas not operating as well. The above theories behind Al Capone’s behavior could also help the government address crime in policy
In 2008, President Bush signed into law The FISA Amendment Act, an act which allowed the government to monitor Americans’ electronic devices. Bush claimed that this Act could help save lives, as mentioned before, but what he did not mention is that this allows the government to conduct surveillance without probable cause. (“How the NSA’s Surveillance Procedures Threaten Americans’ Privacy.”) When people heard about this, they became concerned, and many began to question if the NSA would abuse this power.
Whether it is taking our freedom of speech away to some extent; to being able to go through our mail looking for possible harmful things. They are doing it to protect us; not to hurt
“It's the super-secret program to surreptitiously sweep the Internet for audio, video, photographs, emails and web searches from nine major US Internet providers… in hopes of detecting suspicious behavior that begins overseas and may be tied to terrorism” (Knickerbocker). But the reality of this is that it was created in secrecy without the knowledge of the citizens. While it is understandable to work in
I think that the government should have very little jurisdiction to monitor people’s behavior on the internet. People should indefinitely be innocent until proven guilty. Getting even further into the matter, local government should have little to no say in what people put online. The local government is in charge of rent, safety and zoning. The local government should not be interested in what people choose to have online, unless the person is
According to the federal bureau of investigation crime rates have significantly dropped since 2010. There has been a plethora of efforts to make the current averages plummet, such as G.R.E.A.T., Comprehensive whole child intervention and prevention program, Truancy reduction program, School resource officer program, Scared straight program, etc. The core focus of this paper is to analyze these programs and their results to see whether or not these programs are effective in preventing and suppressing gang involvement. While also pointing out a few implications, and possibly recommendations for future research. Koffman et al.
This completely takes away a person’s right to privacy. The government has access search anyone’s internet or library records. Taking away someone’s right to read what they please also takes away the freedom of writing about controversial topics since anyone who reads it is intimidated by the government (Jacobs and
Agencies watch the things we post in order to catch criminals and make sure terrorists have little control in convincing. Now this can be a good thing but if the power goes to far it could be a violation of our rights and privacy. Which goes against the constitution. The government should have limits to how much power they have on the internet for the safety and rights of our people. A good thing is to realize what rights we have on the internet and watch what we post.
