The world is full of brutality - crimes so disgusting that it makes every headline on the topic the frontline act of any news broadcast or newspaper. Over the last couple of months, big names in Hollywood like producer Harvey Weinstein and actor Kevin Spacey have been ousted as perverts responsible for sexual harassment. While the subject is no longer taboo in Hollywood, it is still a forbidden topic within the world of Young Adult literature. While there are some books within the genre that explore the topic of rape, there are not many. While some people can list more books on both hands, I can only list a few and that’s only on one hand. Today’s discussion will be on how rape should be approached in the Young Adult category and how authors can raise awareness of the topic without causing controversy. Why Rape Is A Taboo Subject Authors like to go …show more content…
However, with technological advices and libraries no longer having a ‘restricted’ section of fiction that they aren’t allowed to read from, readers can how jump online to research the topic for themselves and adults can’t stop them from doing it - protection from the realities of the world has now pretty much gone to the dogs in today’s modern age. People seem to fear the realism of the topic as they believe that kids will be too traumatise. While we have had YA novels about teenagers dying of cancer (The Fault in Our Stars) and stories of kids being forced to kill each other for glory and entertainment (The Hunger Games), these are topics parents have no problems talking about with their children. Sexual assault is seen as something that is swept under the rug and ‘forgotten’ about. For anyone who has experienced rape or has known someone who has, will understand how traumatic the experience can be for the victim and those supporting them through the
In “Crime and Punishment: The saga of Richie Parker” published in Sports Illustrated, Gary Smith helps to explain just how many people are affected by a single sexual assault case. He does this in a very unique style by giving 12 sections explaining the incident from different points of view and the effects of a single crime. One person affected was Jill Agostino, the sports copy editor for Newsday. Her unnamed colleague had given her a copy of an article he was writing on Richie Parker and called asking if she liked it. Little did he know, stories like his were keeping her up at night, reminding her of the time she was raped nine years earlier.
Meghan Cox Gurdon claims in “Darkness Too Visible” that fiction for teens these days expose a high level of violence, abuse and obscenity that disturbs teenagers, causing them to learn or adopt these behaviors. The author starts of by presenting a mother’s perspective of such themes in the young-adult section of a bookstore and how there was nothing she could image giving her daughter, because of the topics these revealed. Her argument is developed by using examples of different books that have a large amount of violent content. For example, one of the books she mentions is “Rage” which uncovers the depressed life of a teenager that self harms secretly. With this said, Gurdon at the end establishes the fact that some adolescents do not read
Rape myths are at the center of the problem of how rape and sexual assault cases are looked at, and treated as in society. Rape myths vary, some excuse the rape, others try to minimize the severity of the situation, while others doubt the act even happened in the first place (Levit and Verchick, 196). Some examples of rape myths include: a victim was “asking for it,” a victim’s previous sexual history, regretful sex is not rape, a woman’s “no” means “yes,” and women lie about rape all the time. Rape myths are targeted towards women, not the rapist. Despite, rape myths being proved false by empirical evidence, they are still prevalent in society.
The article explains how sexual assault continues to be a problem until this very day. When someone is sexually assaulted, it is very hard for them to cope with the fact that someone has touched them in the wrong way. For the ones who commits the assault, it will only become worse for them. A National Study says, “The main source of inmates’ knowledge of prison sex appears to come from their conversations with other inmates”(Response to the Prison Rape Elimination Act). Some inmates could portray the role of acting as if they are there for the victim to talk to, but there are other things that could result from this.
Rape and sexual assault are serious situations that can change a person’s life, both victim and attacker, leaving them with feelings of denial, regret, sadness, anger, etc. Often, people think they will never be able to receive closure and peace once they have been attacked. But speakers Thordis Elva and Tom Stranger, in the TED Talk, prove that to be incorrect. Through their speech, Elva and Stranger are able to speak up about their personal experience with rape, creating strong and meaningful arguments for the audience to hear. By using appeal to ethos, irony and parallelism, they are able to express how it is possible to resolve the pain that comes from sexual assault.
In the memoir, Lucky by Alice Sebold, the author flashes back to her experience of rape and abuse on her college campus. She demonstrates her triumph of a traumatizing experience and how she overcame the situation. The novel, explores her experiences after the rape as the traumatic event changed her as well as a transformation from the treatment of others. Throughout this essay, I will summarize the major events of the rape, the aftermath, reactions and experiences that the author discussed and give critical insight of my reaction to the novel.
Sexual Assault has always been a difficult topic to talk about, but if we do, it can help solve a substantial issue. Most teens, on average, don’t speak up about their sexual assault experiences. There are a number of reasons why this is, a fear of not being believed, or of everyone hating them definitely weighs on them. This causes other problems such as PTSD, anxiety, depression and many more. This can make a teen never trust anyone again, speaking out about their experiences can help heal, and make sure who did it doesn’t run free.

When questioned about rape, especially most women, they might think or even picture a stranger coming out of a dark place to assault someone. But in reality there’s more to it. According to the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, “About half of all people who are raped know the person who attacked them. This is known as date rape — forced sex that can happen not only on a date, but also somewhere like a party with someone the victim may know, like, or even be interested in.” Furthermore, social critic and feminist, Camille Paglia, has been discussing this persisting issue about date rape with a personal stance that many women may disagree with.
The first attempt and success to climb Mt. Everest occured in 1953. Since then, almost 4,000 people have been able to scale the mountain, but over 230 people have not been able to climb it successfully. There is a chance of accident or death when climbing this mountain or any dangerous activity. All people should should have the right to rescue services even if they knowingly put themselves at risk because there is always a chance of an accident happening, rangers are there to save people in danger, and there are rescue vehicles being produced to be used in case of an emergency.
[7] In his book, “Missoula,” John Krakauer analyses the issue of rape in the college town of Missoula. Krakauer begins his work by quoting the article False Allegations of Sexual Assault: Rape is unique. No other violent crime is so fraught with controversy, so enmeshed in dispute and in the politics of gender and sexuality… And within the domain of rape, the most highly charged area of debate concerns the issue of false allegations. For centuries, it has been asserted and assumed that women “cry rape,” that a large proportion of rape allegations are maliciously concocted for purposes of revenge or other motives.
In 1998, McClintock High School in Tempe, Arizona assigned students to read The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain. The book has long been regarded as a controversial novel, and each generation that comes upon it has found something that rubs against the current societal norms. The mother of a student at McClintock took serious offense to the use of the word, “nigger” throughout the book and protested that it be banned due to the racial discrimination (Source I). Huck Finn is just one of the many pieces of literature that have been labelled “challenging,” and many feel that they do not deserve a place in schools’ curriculum. However, the study of challenging literature introduces students to new ideas and lessons that they can apply
Rape is an arduous subject, especially for children, parents understandably hope to shield their children from it. However, according to R.A.I.N.N, the Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network, 44% of sexual assault victims are under age 18. Whether people acknowledge it or not, the reality is this is a tragedy that happens to children. Ignoring the problem doesn’t change this fact. The Orange County Rape Crisis Center has ways to talk about rape with children at any age.
The Freshman 15 is a thought that crosses the minds of most future college students, but most say that it won’t happen to them. This fear of losing a toned body after graduating high school bothers some more than others. They realize after high school there are no longer athletics, and they’ll no longer be exercising regularly. Also, when they depart from their parents house and begin to live on their own their eating habits change.
Sexual assault can either be verbal, physical or visual. Joan Van Niekers cited a recent report by the Human Sciences Research Council which revealed that 34% of learners experienced sexual harassment and other 14% were sexually harassed by teachers , therefore this clearly illustrates that sexual assault take place amongst learners in schools is somehow beyond control and happens in many occasions. In this essay, three causes of sexual assault
