Nowadays, the rapid growth of social media changed today’s society. Social media is being involved in most of the people in daily life. We use the Internet to enter Websites, Social Networks, and other kinds of social media daily. We can see people face-to-face on their cell phone any time even when they are walking or taking buses. Where would we be if social media hadn’t had been created? Are we going to be more or less social if social media never existed? For these questions, there are no right answers because different people have different opinions. Also, besides that, some people misuse social media such as chatting with friends while driving. People even listened to radios and read newspapers to see what happened in the world. However, nowadays, social media makes people’s life be more convenient. We can simply go on social media and we will know about friend’s status and news around the world. According to the article “Is Technology Making people less Sociable…?” author Keith N. Hampton mentions that social media can help us connect with friends that are far away. The author stated that “social ties that we once would have abandoned as we left high school, changed jobs and moved from one neighborhood to another now persist online. (paragraph 4.)” I agreed with the author because friendship has to be connected in the case to maintain without social media, we won’t have to chance to do so since we all have school or work in different places. But now, we can use social media to keep in touch with old friends or friends that are far away. He also says that people still can be easier to share our opinion about different topics on social media. Sometimes A “like” or “comment” on Facebook or other social media can get another friend’s attention. In addition, we can see their posts and status online to see how well they are doing. Because people can access to all kinds of information easily, people are becoming more open-mind and feel empathy for the diverse group of people nowadays. According to the article “Found on Facebook: Empathy” Teddy Wayne says that the use of Facebook tends to increase people empathy. Also, he says that “we can be exposed to different ways of thinking and emotional situations. On a somewhat superficial level, individuals disclose things about themselves, and although it may not bring a deep sense of closeness, the next time you interact with them, you may feel you know them a little better. (par.10)” That means we can expose different emotional issues and allows users to know more about each other. In the same article, research done on Americans attitudes about same-sex marriage shows that the percentage of people expressing acceptance and tolerance of a group that used to be judged (par.7). Also, a study from 2014 mentions that private chats messaging and connecting people can increase more empathy for people who use social media. This research clearly shows that the growth of social media is directly related to people’s attitude about empathy and it did change American’s in a good way that people are more open-minded and be more
