Volunteering is not an exclusively novel activity throughout the human history. During world war one, just in British there were 90,000 volunteers worked at home and abroad providing vital aid of caring for sick and wounded soldiers as recorded by British Red Cross. During wartime, no matter in which society there were people that spontaneously engaged in helping others in need. Volunteering does not only exist during the time of emergency or crisis, in fact it is always an indispensable resource for providing social service and improving our community. In the general perspective, volunteering refers to a kind of helping activity that benefit others or the wider community and it has been done by an individual or a group of people who are not …show more content…
This theory indicates that there are several needs people are struggling to fulfill. These needs are often illustrated as hierarchical levels within a pyramid and the most basic level of needs must be met before the individual start to achieve higher level of needs (Huitt, 2007). From the bottom to the top these five levels of needs are: Physiological Needs (such as food, clothing, shelter), Safety Needs (such as the need to be protected, security and freedom from fear), Love and Belonging Needs (feeling a sense of acceptance, and establishing relationships with others), Esteem Needs (to feel respected, a sense of contribution or value), Self-Actualization Needs (seeking personal growth, the realization of one’s full potential). Spencer (2006) has suggested that volunteers may find their ‘love and belong needs’, ‘esteem needs’ and ‘self-actualization needs’ are likely to be met from volunteering in an organization. Because volunteering provides opportunity for individuals to create bonds with fellow volunteers and organizations, as well as it expands their social networks which leads to more interaction, engagement, and trust with the people that you volunteer with. The social bonds and social network created during volunteering contribute directly to feelings of belonging(Huitt,2007; Erica & Kajsa,2005). However, Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs has been criticized by some …show more content…
There is no doubt that altruistic attitudes play a significant role in motivating people to volunteer, but it is not the only factor that contributes to drive people involve in volunteering. According to functional approach, Clary and his colleagues (1998) have proposed six motivational functions which potentially served by volunteerism, which are Values, Understanding, Social, Career, Protective, and Enhancement. Involving in volunteering work may provide the opportunities for volunteers to express values related to altruistic and humanitarian concerns for others. Understanding function indicates volunteers they could have new learning experiences and the chance to exercise their knowledge and skills. The third function is concerning relationships with others. Volunteering may provide opportunities to individuals to be with one’s friends or to engage in an activity viewed favorably by important others. Career function of volunteering suggests that participate in volunteering work may have some career-related benefits, such as preparing for a new career or developing career-relevant skills. The
Volunteer Recruiting and Development are also in a maturation
Summer brought a conclusion to AP exams, AP and Honors classes, and Swim Team. Although I grateful for the much deserved break, I had an overwhelming urge to become an active member for my community. I knew I needed to obtain my mark in the world in a special way during the summer large-scale or not. However, I never thought I would volunteer at a food bank. As an acutely withdrawn and self-conscious person, I’d much rather prefer to assist out behind the scenes, as a dutiful background member.
However, it made volunteering satisfying. It was also interesting to look back and see myself as a follower and be able to place myself in Kelly’s model. Even though with my tasks I was not an effective follower, I see the importance of what I was doing as an implementer. My experience volunteering here has given me a better understanding of the importance of different
When there is a person that you see that needs help with something and you help them that is doing a service. Sometimes, at school I see a person with a watchdog or service dog. These people help train the dog,
Many believe that volunteering should be by the students choice and they should not be forced into mandatory volunteering. Mandatory volunteering still has many benefits in the students’ lives as well in their academic ability. The way education should word is that the student learns the material in the classroom and then applies the skills someway in that field. This would help the students to learn more about the field they may be entering by being able to experience the career before pursuing it. Peter R. Sawyer said “We do know that any skills learned in the classroom and not readily applied to the real world will not persist.
70% of wealthy parents make their kids volunteer 10 hours or more a month, while only 3% of low income parents do the same (Dindar). While volunteering is generally a positive action that leads to positive outcomes to those in need, it can be problematic. Parents who use concerted cultivation encourage community service to gain resume boosters, networks, and a sense of pride in helping those who are “less fortunate.” Often the only time the upper class and middle class communities interact with low-income communities is through volunteer work. Though their very limited interactions, they form stereotypes, prejudices, and mental hierarchies of each other.
The authors also point out that the government is already searching for ways to diminish their role in the social services they provide, regardless if there are volunteer organizations in place or not. Therefore, volunteer work allows communities to be self-sufficient, despite continued government assistance or lack thereof (413). Another critic brought to light that forcing people to engage in volunteer work may reduce intrinsic motivation to participate in community service in the future. However, just as the authors say, involving the free choice of the participants to partake in the classes
No matter what the reason to volunteer is, there is still a need for the volunteer themselves. Without the volunteer numerous amounts of people live in poverty and unacceptable conditions. A volunteer can change this, and a volunteer can change a person’s entire life. Those that receive assistance are always appreciative of how total strangers aided them even if they are not good at displaying it. Nevertheless, the person that was assisted is always thankful no matter how small the deed was.
The use of volunteers in these capacities fostered a sense of community among the members; however, the “community” would not continue to be beneficial to the overall health of the
Once they success doing it , it motivated them to try something that more bigger and more challenging because it give a high value of self-satisfaction and self-potential that they can be whatever they wanted to be and do. Moreover, by doing that, they would generate their own confident level and they can determine their ability and their own performance potentials (Hartzell, Study.com, 2015).To conclude, the theories of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs can motivate the employee in the company from the beginner employee to reach the top and upper level in the company because he or she have meet and achieve and motivated by all the needs of theories of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. Other motivational theories that can motivate the company employee is Hertzberg’s Two-Factor Theory. This type of motivational theories is used to identify the positive which refer as attraction and satisfaction and the negative which refers as dissatisfaction of the feeling of their work and conditions (Contractzilla, 2014).
Discuss the influence of social or group norms on behavior According to research, a wide range of social, environmental, cognitive, cultural and biological factors can influence behavior. In this paper, I will discuss the influence of social norms on behavior using my own personal experience and how I conformed to social norms in my adolescent years up until my late twenties. Influence of social groups on behavior can have both negative and positive impact.
Humans have amazing capabilities to be selfless and loving. I used to volunteer at the Sacred Heart Community Service organization (SHCS), an organization dedicated in bringing together the community to address poverty in Silicon Valley. During my time volunteering, I met amazing people, whom I had the pleasure of volunteering with, that made sure that those who are less fortunate than they are are taken care. One of the most memorable volunteers that I met there was an elderly woman, Beth, who frequently worked in the clothes closet, a program that provides clothes to those who are in need. When I asked Beth why she was volunteering despite her age and fragility, she told me that she volunteers for the feeling of satisfaction she gets when
The situation at the homes of the children also varies – some come from orphanages and others from loving families who accompany them to the hospital. Why is helping other people my passion? It is hard to explain, but essentially I want to be useful to the society, especially to the children who are in desperate need of attention. Coming back home from a long day at the hospital with plenty of emotions, thoughts and plans for the future feels incredible. Due to that, I wonder – do I give more or do I receive more by being a volunteer?
Although volunteering on a regular basis helps a non-profit in allocating day-to-day work load to staff, organizations often need volunteers for special initiatives. Fund drives, capital projects and special events all need community volunteers to ensure a successful
Maslow's Hierarchy is a five tier model of the basic human needs. Maslow thought that people were motivated to achieve certain needs, and that some needs were more important than others. The five tier model can be divided into two separate categories, Growth needs: Transcendence, self actualization, aesthetic needs, cognitive needs, and Deficiency needs: esteem needs, love and belonging needs, safety needs, physiological needs. Maslow believed that individuals must lower their deficit needs, before moving n to the higher level growth needs. This paper will describe that five tier model, and it will give an in depth analysis on what types of characteristics that are commonly found in the people who achieve those needs.
