Competition between companies such as Apple, Samsung, Amazon, and Windows, causes consumers to have to decide what brand they desire. All businesses know how consumers work. The advertisement continues this theme by displaying an old looking car, but still functioning like any other car these days, just maybe not with all the bells and whistles. The use of the paper map also shows how the past and the present come together. Most people do not even know how to use paper maps anymore because they are used to directions being instantly given to them on their smart phone. But using a paper map back in the day was considered better than guessing the direction to go. The setting itself is retrospective just as Hartmann and et al. discusses in the article. When advertisements decide to use nature scenes, such as Amazon, instead of urban scenes, consumers are positively affected from it reducing stress and enhancing cognitive functions (Hartmann, et al.: 183-184). Amazon uses nature settings of the mountains and a lake, giving it primal and calm connotations. The arrow tattoo has symbols and meanings, but the literal meaning is that it was once used as a weapon and way of hunting. Since modern technology has advanced to the use of different weapons such as guns and bombs, the use of the arrow in the advertisement takes the consumer back to a time where arrows were used. By putting it in a modern advertisement, brings the retrospective appeal back to the

“The most basic human desire is to feel like you belong. Fitting in is important.” This quotation by Simon Sinek, British/American best-selling author and motivational Ted Talk speaker, embodies the rhetorical appeal that marketers across the world so widely attack. Marketing campaigns target people’s wants and needs to persuade the consumer that they are buying a product that gives them more than any other product. In recent years, car companies have been particularly pushy in utilizing this tactic to convince customers that their car is the highest in quality, most reliable, and most beneficial in building relationships with friends and family.
Advertisements can get old very quickly; they are usually repetitive, boring, and a waste of everyone’s time. People are getting better at ignoring advertisement, but occasionally, some brilliant advisement can be stuck in one’s head. One advertisement for Orion Telescopes was particularly interesting. With just three images, the moon, the American flag, and the Made in China on the flag, it captured the capability of their product and added an ironic twist at the end. The simplistic design, the clear message, and the interesting layout works great together to promote their telescope, and intrigue their American consumer.
In addition, the ad strives to bring awareness and educate the public about the all too real and horrifying facts of animal cruelty. One of the elements used to support the message is the powerful image of the neglected dog. Light is used to create contrast, and it serves to bring to the forefront the focal point. The viewer’s eye is immediately drawn to the timid and emaciated dog chained to the barrel, stating its claim as the ad’s focal point. In addition, the obscure dark area serves to set a somber mood reinforcing the message of the dog’s helplessness and desperation.
