The introduction of bottling water started in United Kingdom in 1622 at the Holy Well, as time passed bottled water started to become popular in demand especially in the 17th and 18th century used in water therapy and spa-going in Europeans and American colonist .The inclination of using bottled water has reached its ultimate peak especially in the 21st century; this is due to the easy accessibility and convenience. Now with the increasing standard of living bottled water is more affordable to people and it can be gotten anywhere in the country. Despite the convenience of bottled water, there are some harmful effect towards the environment and the health risks that can arise.
Although convenient and accessible to most of the population, water

For this we take in the research done in United States of America. Both Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) are accountable for the security of drinking water. FDA manages the safety of bottled water while EPA manages the safety of tap water. However, FDA’s regulations does not include in water packaged within the same state, hence roughly 60-70 per cent of marketed bottled water are excluded from the FDA’s regulations. In fact, FDA’s rules are substandard compared to EPA’s regulation; This can be seen as the evaluation of the pathogens Cryptosporidium or Giardia which are the usual cause of diarrhoea are only tested in tap water but bottled water companies are not required to do this. Also, according to WWF in many countries bottled water is not safer than tap water, but it is sold 1000 times the …show more content…
Studies reports that plastic packaging such as used in bottled water can contain Bisphenol A (BPA). This chemical can change the chemical makeup of hormones in the human body. The Environment California Research and Policy Centre have linked BPA to various types of cancer such as breast and uterine cancer. BPA is also known to reduce testosterone levels and cause miscarriages. Alongside that, BPA can distrust the children developing system in the early childhood years. Although the amount of BPA that leeches are in small quantity but the cumulative effect are concerning. There are also reports done by the Natural Resource Defence Council that a water bottle that stores water for 10 weeks can cause a chemical called phthalates to leak into the water, this chemical is known to disrupt testosterone and other hormones. This is harmful towards the human
There’s nothing special about bottled water. It`s not hard to go to tap. But the point is if I’m thirsty, I would rather solo than water, and I think everyone else would
Bottled water is very common to use, but yet not the best choice. In the article, “The Wrong Way to Think about California Water” by Michael Hiltzik, he explains why to avoid bottled water. I think it would be difficult to avoid bottled water because he said that the entire nation consumes more than 10 billion gallons of bottled water a year. Then an expert, included in the article, said that bottle water is incredibly expensive. On the other hand, I think if you use tap water then you’ll have to pay a water bill which is quite expensive too.
Each year, 48 million food and water borne illnesses will sicken the United States inhabitants, and an additional 3,000 people will die from those illnesses. Food and water safety is crucial to the public because it directly affects people’s health, and without good hygiene diseases will spread quickly. It is also important to point out that many people live in conditions where they do not have access to resources necessary for human survival, and these are the ones that need the most assistance. For many, it is due to the carelessness of food and water distributors and lack of government intervention. For example, the Flint Michigan Water Crisis, a completely preventable occurrence.
Not only is bottled water extremely regulated, but it is also a viable source of hydration for individuals in times of need; therefore one like myself once again disagree with Annie Leonard’s position against bottled water with evidence provided by IBWA. In the article, “Bottled Water Matters,” IBWA had shown the viability of bottled water through their statement, “ Bottled water companies respond with efficiency and speed with regard to provide bottled water in coordination with emergency relief operations.” This statement clearly demonstrates how bottled water can be very essential and lifesaving in times of need. For example, in a disaster like an earthquake, buildings, including tap faucets, would be demolish by the forces of nature.
These facts introduce and support the message that Standage is delivering. Standage continues with many statistics: “Admittedly, both kinds of water suffer from occasional contamination problems but tap water is more stringently monitored and tightly regulated than bottled water. New york city tap water, for example, was tested 430,600 times during 2004 alone.” He stated. Even though he admits that both of each kind contains chemicals-which at the same time Standage claims that the tap water is more sanitized-but also he points out that it is not the taste that differs between the two
This may even lead to primary consumers to eat plastic. Also, research shows that fish cannot detect these dead zones so once they enter them they most likely will not get out. In addition to this, contaminated fish and marine life humans consume can contribute to diseases and problems within the human body. Exposition to chemicals such as chemicals in plastic bottles and pesticides can cause hormonal problems, reproductive problems, nervous system damage and kidney damage. Also according to Planet Aid “Bacteria turn metals into its most toxic form which is then absorbed
This experiment shows that water from different companies is different and that they can be identified based on their numbers given in the water quality reports. References ¹ Graber, C.; Twilley, N. The Bottle vs. Tap Battle Finale: Alkaline H2O, Lead Pipes, and,
Also, consider that people in cities and in towns need water
People complain about pollution from factories, cars, global warming, and the melting of polar ice caps, yet many people disregard the dangerous that come with fracking. Fracking is the process of injecting liquid at high pressure into subterranean rocks, and/or boreholes to force open existing fissures and extract oil or gas. Fracking is causing an epidemic economically and environmentally. Fracking is continuously destroying the earth day by day. From the endless fracking today’s economy is depleting.
This means that 25 to 40 percent of the bottled water is not any different from the tap water only that it has been exposed to or has a high concentration of the chemicals used to manufacture the packaging plastics. Due to the pathetically primitive regulation of the bottled water, the manufacturers are not keen to inform the consumers of the contaminants that are present in their water. According to Warburton (1993), consumers are likely to drink bottled water containing contaminants such as E.coli, asbestos, giardia, bromate and many other industrial chemicals and pathogens. Arnold & Larsen (2006) indicate that ten water brands in the US had thirty-eight
Water is also a good source of many fish and seafood, so a good source of food. You will also find
Imagine what happens if we keep on polluting our planet? What happens to our future generation? Since plastic takes years to biodegrade, if we keep polluting our environment with plastic, then our future generation will suffer from the environment around them. It also means that plastic and other trash will continue polluting the ocean, which can cause thousands of sea animals to go extinct, providing us with less source of food. Not only sea animals, but animals all over the world might extinct or become endangered because of pollution.
A Case Study on Polluter’s Dilemma I. Background/Point of View On a small plastic manufacturing, Jonica Gunson works as an environmental compliance manager. The company where she is working with is now facing a serious situation that needs to have a fast and decisive decision, decision whether to invest or not to invest money on new technology that will help decrease or as possible eliminate the level of toxic in the water which is flowing from the back of the factory up to lake. Though the company is compliant with the levels of emissions set by the Environmental Management board, the manager sees that environmental procedures for this specific toxic are sheathing behind logical evidence, particularly that there is a protest from a certain scientist that is publish in the newspaper.
The life of your plastic water bottle can go way further than just the trash can. Our ocean is so polluted by our actions and carelessness that even us humans are being affected, sea animals, and surrounding animals are all being greatly influenced by the polluted waters. Our ocean is extremely polluted with plastics and other trash that humans have put in there. Specifically, 80% of the pollution that’s in the ocean, is because of us. According to “The Oceans Are Drowning in Plastic - And No One is Paying Attention,” Jenna Jambeck said that if something is not done, the plastic in the ocean will double by 2025.
When it comes to natural disasters or areas where clean drinking water is not available, bottled water could be crucial. The shelf life of bottled water is extensive, especially compared to tap water. When talking about its advantages in countries or places with poor water resources, its portability is an advantage also in this instance, it allows countries where clean water is not accessible, bottled water allows the people of these countries the opportunity to protect themselves from the diseases that linger in the contaminated water. The diseases people encounter often make them extremely ill and at times they don’t survive. Bottled water's high reputation, and standards for cleanliness grant third world countries the chance to attempt to protect their citizens.
