Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. This is something that I have an abundance of, which is why nursing is the career field I will be entering. In general, nurses provide care to sick individuals. Nursing is a tough profession; however, between the working conditions, education required, and salary, nursing is well worth the time and money. In the first place, nurses have to deal with troublesome working conditions. In particular, nurses are on their feet almost the entire day. Their work day is filled with a vast amount of standing, bending, and lifting (Career Cruising). Some of their responsibilities include performing physical exams and providing medication. It can also be emotionally demanding if one is working with severely ill or dying patients. Similarly, they work in a …show more content…
However, the place where one can generally earn more is at a hospital. The average hourly wage of a registered nurse at a hospital is about $33.94. That amounts up to around $70,590 a year. RNs that work in doctor’s offices are paid a substantial amount as well. Their average hourly wage is $30.22, which is approximately $62,850 annually. Nurses can also be paid extra for working overtime and being on-call. They also attain benefits such as, health insurance, dental and vision insurance, paid holidays, sick leaves, and paid time off. Emily Bratcher reported that, “The best-paid 10 percent of RNs made more than $96,320, while the bottom 10 percent earned less than $45,630.” In conclusion, nursing is a superb field to belong to. They endure arduous working conditions, require a degree or diploma, and are compensated adequately. It may be a challenging profession, but it is gratifying to be able to help an individual. According to William Osler, “The trained nurse has become one of the great blessings of humanity, taking a place beside the physician and the
The watershed “IOM Initiative on the Future of Nursing” report encompasses a four pronged approach or some might say, a challenge to the whole profession of nursing. the challenge to be better educated so that we can provide the highest quality of care to our patients, the push to encourage health care professionals to achieve higher levels of education. The initiative to have a stronger voice and presence in guiding the direction of how the health care landscape in this county. All of these factors come into play in the ever changing landscape of our health care system. Now more than ever nurse leaders have a great opportunity to have a profound impact on health care policies and decisions that will eventually decide which direction our current health care delivery system takes.
Introduction The idea of how nurses can conduct themselves in a daily basis for some can be viewed as they have it easy or least make it look easy and for others it’s world’s best job. The truth is being a nurse is very difficult job and it can be very labor intensive and very rewarding at the same time. Just think every time you go into the doctor’s office or have an overnight stay in the hospital what all to do your nurse during their shift?
A great deal of t time you may also need to advocate for your patients. This can take an enormous toll on you without you even realizing it. “NURSES ARE short-handed, understaffed, and overworked. We are only an accidental needlestick or body fluid splash injury away from exposure to deadly diseases. We get aches and pains from lifting and tugging on people bigger than we are.
A registered nurse (RN) is someone who on a daily basis, records medical histories and symptoms, administers patients’ medicine, treatments, and sets up plans for the care or contributes to existing plans of the patients’ (“Registered Nurses.”). Registered nurses observe the patients’ and then they record their observations to keep track of the patient 's’ progress. Also, RN’s help perform diagnostic tests and analyze results (“Registered Nurses.”). Above all, the most helpful thing a registered nurse does, is teach their patients’ and their patients’ family how to manage illnesses and injuries and what should
Caring, compassionate, leaders, dedicated, non-judgmental, passionate, holistic, and healers are only some of the words used to describe the profession of nursing. ADD HERE. I am choosing to pursue nursing because I want to make a difference in the world. Nothing is more satisfying than providing care to someone when they need it the most. I have been interested in the medical field for as long as I can remember.
A primary factor in risking patient safety is to have a high nurse-to-patient ratio. Hospitals and nursing homes must have policies and guidelines in place for the nurse-to-patient ratios, but the policies are continuously fluctuating to compensate for the shortage. In order for nurses to want to stay in this field, benefits and policies need to be modified. Everything is like a domino effect, if the nurses aren’t well rested and able to work properly the patients suffer. “Examining survey data from 95,499 nurses, we found much higher job dissatisfaction and burnout among nurses who were directly caring for patients in hospitals and nursing homes than among nurses working in other jobs or settings, such as the pharmaceutical industry.
Nursing to me is a commitment to not only my patients but the community in which they reside. It takes great skill and dedication to be a nurse. Nursing goes beyond simply caring for patients. It involves aspects that many people do not realize, for example, education. When a nurse graduates from a program they are expected to continue to learn new things and stay up to date on the current needs of the community.
The nursing profession, like all professions, has its ups and downs. The one of the great aspects of being a nurse is that you will make a difference in a person’s life. Regardless it being in an outpatient setting or home setting or even a school setting; a nurse touches people’s lives just by being there for them and providing the support they need in that moment. However, the not so great aspects of being a nurse is nursing burnout. I believe this is the greatest challenge in the nursing.
My personal beliefs of nursing is that it's a rewarding profession that upholds high standards to care for its patients respectively. It should always be about the patient. That should be the number one priority in health care facilities. Although, it's not an easy career to join, it's worth the hard work in the end. Nursing is a great career to have for anyone with compassion and a kind heart to care for people in general.
The lowest 10 percent annual average was less than $45,040 and the highest 10 percent annual average was more than $94,720. Annual salary of nurses working under government jobs was the highest, while nurses working for private facilities typically remained at the bottom of the salary scale. Because bed-ridden patients must be monitored continuously twenty-four hours a day, nurses working in hospitals or facilities such as nursing homes work in twelve hour shifts. Many nurses working in these health care facilities work three twelve hour days, having the remaining four days off.
As a nurse, we have to be caring and compassionate. It has to come from within. We have to use the knowledge and skills we have developed to be able to show support for our patients and their families. There will be difficult days that we may have to give uncomfortable news to our patients or even share joy with them. With each day it brings about new and different encounters.
Our society today is based off of technology and gives us the views of people in a negative and a positive way. The Media affects people 's beliefs on different subjects because what they see is what they believe and impairs their judgement of other professionals. Instead of looking at all the negative comments and images of nurses there are positive to theses people in this career. In an article from Public Perceptions of Nursing Careers: The Influence of the Media and Nursing Shortages they said that “watching a tv show that is about nursing that viewers compared to non-viewers were more likely to have considered a career in nursing. It was 69% vs. 57%” (2).
A nurse makes about $65,470 a year (CITATION:(<i>Registered Nurses: Occupational Outlook Handbook:: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics</i>, 2014). A nursing job is a great experience and career to have. Taking care of people and making sure that they 're healthy, is part of a nurses job. Nurses educate patients and the public about various health conditions. Nurses make sure that their patients are in
Nursing Profession Paper Several self-reflective thoughts come to mind in responding to the query ‘what does it mean to think like a nurse’. The first thought which comes to mind is that of critical thinking. A nurse that applies critical thinking to their accountabilities is a professional who is able to organize their situational understanding across a broad spectrum of patient interaction. One who can take into consideration all of the patient data available to piece together a solution and/or plan of action which is specific to their patient so to optimize the outcome. Someone that asks questions for discovery and better understanding so to further progress towards assessing the range for best and worst case patient scenarios.
I cannot help feeling that I did not choose nursing, it chose me. In high school, I had no clue what I wanted to study in college, but that all changed after my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. One day, she needed me to drive her to two back-to-back medical appointments. I dropped my mom off at the front of the small hospital and parked the car. The nurse navigator sent her assistant down to the lobby to escort me up to her office.
