In analyzing this passage I found Homer becoming his own person. Standing up and stating that he doesn’t need to conform to everyone else’s thought or opinions. He questions others actions and why they must be compared to his own, “Do you have to be descended from Atreus To love your mate? Every decent, sane man Loves his woman and cares for her, as I did, Loved her from my heart.” Every person is capable of the same feelings and emotions and no others relationship is more sincere than another’s just by how it came about, “. It doesn't matter that I won her with my spear.” He then talks about how forgiveness is hard when betrayed especially when the betrayal is something that happens so close to the heart. That Homer was hurt and cant be won
The pathos and ethos of cultures is often discernable in literary narratives as expressions of the sentiment of approval or disapproval. Thus, the impact of literary narratives on cultures cannot be understated; the arts do impact and influence culture in both positive and negative ways. This is not a new phenomenon and can be observed in cultures as early as 6 Century B.C. and can be traced throughout human history. An example of this can be seen in Homer’s Odyssey, in which there are certain characters within the narrative that portray what is known as “arete.” Arete is viewed as a desirable character trait which some define as the display of perseverance, quick-wittedness, prowess, valor, etc.
Homer demonstrates the values of Greek society in many ways. Using everything from clever analogies to poetic verses. Homer shows that he is a master storyteller by dancing around the facts but never acknowledging them directly. For example, in Greek culture guests are always treated with respect and like royalty. Homer demonstrates it throughout the book in various situations such as when Telemachus visits King.
Loyalty and faithfulness are traits expected of all mankind. They are the virtues that embody the highest ideals of a modern day person. Once he argues with his father, “coal mine is your life, it’s not mine”. Homer is implying that you are yourself, I am myself. You work in the coalmine now does not foreshadow that I will inherit that job in the future. Homer’s father hopes that one day he will be working in the mine with him, but according to the Independent View of the Self, Homer distinguishes himself from his father. Even the community says that one day he will take after his father, this saying does not affect his view at

The Odyssey is often cited as an epitome of the hero’s journey and the monomyth. The hero of the story, Odysseus is on a 10 year battle homeward from the Trojan War to see his wife and son again. With the help divine intervention, Odysseus is able to return home and save his wife from the evil suitors who have continuously tried to win her. One could easily argued that Odysseus is an exemplar of the hero, but there is another story: Odysseus is the opposite of a hero and is not worthy to be called such. He is the villain where the gods are the hero.
Dichen Choden Bhutia Mr. Bodh Prakash MA English Classical Greek Literature 4th Semester 22nd February 2017 Comment on the centrality of the memory and memorialization in Homer’s Odyssey. Memory is our capacity to store, carry, and remember the past encounters and events in the human mind. It can be considered as the utilization of past experience to influence or impact current conduct. Memory is the result of what we recall, and gives us the capacity to take in and adjust from past encounters and also to put together connections.
Homer’s use of techniques makes the reader or listener really feel the loss of Hektor, and it’s affect it will have on the people of Troy, and the overall war. Byronic Heroes are “imitated in life as well as in art” (613). Homer Simpson is a Byronic Hero in many ways. Throughout the seasons we see that Homer is not a very smart man, or a very caring man. Determining the difference between right and wrong can be difficult, but life lessons help us figure it out.
