What is a hero to you? Is it someone like Superman, Batman, Spiderman or maybe even Wonder Woman? Does your hero save lives or fight crimes? A hero could be anyone, just a regular person. It does not have to just be someone who fights crimes on a daily basis or put bad people away. Yes, those are heroes and I for one greatly appreciate all of the people who risk their lives everyday fighting for our country or just for our well-being and safety. But a hero does not have to be all of that. “A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself,” (Cambell, Moyers and Flowers). A hero could be anyone who stands out to you. Anyone that shows great courage and strength can be a hero, because those are the quality of a true hero. “I think a hero is any person really intent on making this a better place for all …show more content…
He was a cunning, smart, loyal, and compassionate man. Odysseus was a ruler of the island Ithaca. He has been in war for ten years where he save the Greeks from the Trojans, and it had also took him another ten years to get home. He is considered a great hero because he overcomes all these extremely dangerous situations. He did what he had to do to save his men, when they were turned into pigs. . Odysseus even defeated the cyclops. But he knew him and his men could not do it a long, so he came up with a plan. “So you ask me the name I’m known by cyclops? I will tell you but you must give me a guest- gift as you promised, nobody- that is my name- nobody- so my mother and father call me, all of my friends,” (Odysseus). He tricked the cyclops into believing He even tricked the cyclops into thinking his name was nobody. So when Odysseus began to defeat the cyclops; the cyclops yelled “no one is hurting me”, so the people didn’t think he was in any danger. Smart right? Whatever battle he came across, he made it
A hero could be any person in any type of situation. If someone says “You are a hero”, or “You are my hero”, those phrases have two different meanings. Being a hero has 3 different meanings to me; first, a hero could be someone who is willing to put themselves at risk to help others, someone who is willing to sacrifice anything to help others, and finally a hero could be someone who has changed or affected your life in any positive way. First, a hero to me is someone who is willing to put themselves at risk to help others. That could be a police officer, firefighter, or anyone.
We all have heroes. My question to you is what makes a hero a hero? I believe that a hero has to be courageous and they have to have a passion for what they are doing. A hero has to be loving and patient. My hero is a very, very beautiful girl.
He continues to believe in Ithaca and dreams of his queen and never loses sight of his goal despite the years and many distractions. Odysseus takes risks, an example of this is in book IX, when he enters the Cyclopes cave not knowing what’s inside. He does many things throughout the epic that seem to lack judgement, but later show he always had it under control. Another quality that supports Odysseus being a hero is that he is blessed by a god, meaning they notice something great or godlike in him. Lastly the most important aspect of his heroism is that he isn’t a textbook hero, unlike Hercules, Odysseus embraces his flaws and mortality which makes him stronger.
Is Odysseus a hero? The webster's dictionary definition of a hero is “a person who is admired or idealized for courage or noble achievements.” Personally when I think of a hero I think of someone who sacrifices everything to help the people around them. Someone who is selfless, bold, and gallant.
Throughout our lives, there will be people we think of as “heroes.” We look up to them and aspire to somehow become the type of person that they are. Some people say that their parents are their heroes and some say athletes are theirs, so therefore, I pose the question: what makes a hero a hero? The Oxford Dictionary defines a hero as “a person, who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities,” which is quite possibly the truth, but I believe there is more into making a person a hero. The perfect example of a hero is the protagonist of the epic poem, The Odyssey, Odysseus.
While this is what the book definition depicts a hero as, we all have a personal opinion or definition of what we believe one is. To many, a hero is the person who fixes a difficult situation. To others, it is a well respected adult or peer. In my opinion, a hero is a respectful person will three important traits, that is an all around good person, and that will always help you when necessary. The three important traits I believe a hero must possess
Heroes in our society are revered and respected as Joseph Campbell reminds us: “A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself” (Joseph Campbell). Heroes exist in all societies and throughout history. Maybe they are not always on the news or from the movies, but their words and their actions never fail to resonate across their feats. A hero gives of himself and dedicates himself to causes which better others and their society unlike individuals who are self serving, greedy, and cruel.
Raldo Waldo Emerson once said. “A hero is no braver than an ordinary man, but he is braver five minutes longer.” My personal definition of a hero is someone who does great things for their community or country without expecting anything in return. My personal hero is my dad because he works in construction outside every day in the heat or cold and he comes home exhausted from work to make dinner for me, my mom, and himself. He even deals with all of my craziness and silliness.
According to Oxford Dictionary, a hero is “a person who is admired for their courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities” ("Hero."). For the most part, that definition is true. Let 's analyze what this actually means. First off, a hero has to be admired, usually for a certain task or commitment they have out-performed. The task requires courage.
Heroes, are everywhere. They are an aspect of our lives, culture and mind. This often leads us to ask what exactly a hero is. A hero is someone who has courage to do the things that they may not want to, they have the strength to pull through what they want or need to, and they are kind and compassionate to the end. That is what a true hero is, and that's what they will remain throughout time no matter how the challenges change.
He was smart enough to wait for his moment then strike. Additionally, he was clever enough to make such a good plan that he could kill all the suitors and take his life back, which is what he did. Odysseus’s repeated demonstration of cleverness helped him through his journey and made him a true
Superman. Batman. Spider Man. When younger kids think of the word "hero", these are the words that come to mind. However, my definition of hero is much broader than a few superheroes- my definition of a hero is anyone who makes a large, positive impact on one's life, or is an exemplar to others.
You must be made all of iron" (279-80). While Odysseus is a strong man and a hard worker, it is always better to be on his good side, as he can be very temperamental( third source). We see that he has a temper multiple times throughout his journey, but the most prominent time, perhaps, is when he has the suitors killed when he returns to Ithaca. In conclusion, Odysseus is a hero because of his many great qualities.
There are various approaches to describing a hero. There is also an infinite number of individuals who can be defined as heroes. A hero can be a person who demonstrates valor. A hero can be a champion. A hero can even save a life or even mankind.
To me, a hero is someone who gives everything they have to assure the happiness of others and a hero is also someone who gives up his life or her life so someone else could live. In all honesty, a hero isn’t really what we think a “hero” is based on definitions and what the movies or even comic books have told us. Anyone can be
