The Weight of the World The nature vs. nurture debate is a common and long standing debate in fields such as biology, sociology, psychology, history, literacy, government, and many more, but it is accepted that they both play a huge part in the world. Nature produces a template of what an organism can become. The organism is held between the ends of a spectrum of what can be, yet it will never have the knowledge of its full potential. Due to this, the organism in question must dedicate itself to an environment in which it can fully express its absolute abilities. The characters of The Other Wes Moore by Wes Moore is a wonderful example of this theory. It should not be expected for a seed planted in hydrochloric acid to grow, therefore it …show more content…
In the beginning of Chapter 7, the author of the story, Wes Moore, shows that due to his mother sacrificing her time and moving him to a better neighborhood and school, military school, and the books he read, he was able to make a successful life for himself. If it wasn’t for his mother he would most likely have continued to sell drugs like his brother. The tone of Chapter 7 was appreciative and this is in light of the fact that the author Wes Moore appreciated that his mother and other people around him attempted to support him and encouraged him no matter where he decided to go in life. He was also able to look up to people such as Lieutenant Colonel Murane and Admiral Hill, who were all members of the military and thus would have had lots of discipline. This discipline wore off on Wes Moore and taught him how to become the excellent leader he later became. His military training leads him to becoming a paratrooper where the first half of Chapter 7 begins and also ends, with Wes Moore leaping out the back of the plane feeling peace, love, and appreciation as he sails through the air towards Alabama …show more content…
The majority of what makes up an organism is its genetic variation, but it is impossible to not suffer from changes due to the environment, some of these changes may be unnoticeable, but some can determine life and death. This is caused by something known as epigenetics, which is the modification of gene expression, rather than the sequence of genes themselves. A few of the disease found in humans that are dependent on the environment of the human are type two diabetes, alcoholism, some forms of cancer, schizophrenia, heart disease, along with many others. A person's personality is also determined by the society around them. It is only natural for the human mind to accept the folkways, mores, and taboos of the people around them and thus strengthen these norms. Due to groupthink a person that accepts the goals and means of the society will most likely disregard the means after being subject to the ideals of a group of deviants for a long period of time. Due to these many reasons, of which there are many more, it should be understood and mentally maintained that while there may always be choices, there may not be any good choices
Where we’re from, who we know, and how our mental makeup is, is very important in our lives. It can be the deciding factor between life in prison and a life dedicated to giving back to others. In The Other Wes Moore, The lives of two young men are examined through three distinct lenses, how the role our environment, social capital (How we get ahead by helping each other) and how our mindset can dictate who we become later on in life. Both of these young men grew up in roughly the same environment, the ghettos of Baltimore, Maryland and the Bronx, New York, respectively.

The Environment Can Control In times of difficulty, individuals tend to change who they are. For example, when one tends to grow up and go through the stages of adulthood, they change their ways in which they act or think. Situations and environment are able to control and manipulate an individual. Situations can become so severe that they can lead to savagery in one’s individual environment.
Conformity and group mentality are major aspects of social influence that have governed some of the most notorious events and experiments in history. The Holocaust is a shocking example of group mentality, or groupthink, which states that all members of the group must support the group’s decisions strongly, and all evidence leading to the contrary must be ignored. Social norms are an example of conformity on a smaller scale, such as tipping your waiter or waitress, saying please and thank you, and getting a job and becoming a productive member of society. Our society hinges on an individual’s inherent need to belong and focuses on manipulating that need in order to create compliant members of society by using the ‘majority rules’ concept. This
Introduction: In the attempt to explain human behaviour, one of the oldest debates in psychology is the issue of nature versus nurture. This debate revolves around the extent to which genetic inheritance and external environmental factors affect human behaviour. At one end there are the nativists which believe that human differences are based of genetic codes. On the other hand, there are the empiricists who believe the human mind at birth is a blank slate and is eventually “filled” by experience.

Critical Analysis Saul McLeod discusses nature versus nurture in his article “Nature Versus Nurture in Psychology.” McLeod describes the theory of nature versus nurture and important psychologists, states the history behind the theories, and mentions recent ideas and theories pertaining to nature versus nurture. With McLeod’s wide coverage and depth, he displays a good range in knowledge of the topic and produces an informative article. McLeod first states that the debate of nature versus nurture focuses on environment and genes and then describes each: “Nature is what we think of as pre-wiring and is influenced by genetic inheritance and other biological factors. Nurture is generally taken as the influence of external
Gene’s Transformation From a Paranoid Boy to a Peaceful Man In John Knowles’s novel, A Separate Peace, Gene Forrester was faced with a challenge as he feared his best frenemy, Phineas. Phineas, otherwise known as Finny, acquired the traits of a handsome, charismatic athlete while Gene remained an observant, brainy introvert. The two teenage boys attended Devon School in New Hampshire during World War II. Although Phineas considered Gene his best friend, Gene saw Finny as a threat.
Nature versus Nurture is one of the oldest debates within psychology that has been going on for centuries. The debate of nature versus nurture is focused on whether the behavior of a particular individual is inherited through genes and other biological factors or it is acquired through influences of external factors such as product of exposure, conditioning and or experiences (McLeod, 2007). The Nature theory is thought of as pre-wiring whichdetermines the genetics that are inherited such as eye colour, pigmentation of skin and even certain diseases are all of the things that get inherited through birth. Other physical characteristics such as height and weight are not as strongly influenced by the genetic make-up because they are also influenced by lifestyle choices (McLeod, 2007).

This quote shows the start of Zebra’s new journey. This quote shows how Zebra loved running, and he imagined himself transforming into an eagle when a car hit him.
