Controversial Topic Merriam Webster defines Controversy as “a discussion marked especially by the expression of opposing views”(Controversy). There are many controversies in America right now. Some of these controversies are if college should be free, Animal testing, and dress code. Controversies will start an argument that can lead to the end of friendships or the ruining of families. There are several reasons why the minimum wage should be increased. One good reason the minimum wage should be increased

One reason banning books is negative. “Parents who do not like specific books can have their kids opt out of an assignment without infringing on the rights of others. The National Coalition against Censorship explained that ‘Even books or materials that many find ‘objectionable’ may have educational value, and the decision about what to use in the classroom should be based on professional judgments and standards, not individual preferences'’”(Banned books). Parents and people can have their own opinions about certain books but they should not be allowed to take the book away from people. Many books that people are banning have educational value and can help us learn. The decision about whether or not a certain book should be allowed in a classroom should be up to the principal or the district and not just someone that does not like the book. Another reason is many books that are needed to be educated about literature and history are banned like To Kill a Mockingbird, The Great Gatsby, and The Help. With these books being banned many kids are deprived of cultural and historical knowledge.(Banned books). Many good books that have many educational purposes are being banned. These books would help us learn about history or literature. By banning these books the people that banned them are depriving kids of cultural and historical knowledge. The final reason is a study found that reading a challenging book called Harry Potter by J.K. …show more content…
One good reason we should ban bottled water “About 70% of plastic water bottles bought in the United States were not recycled in 2015, which means the majority end up in landfills or in the oceans, harming the ecosystem and poisoning animals” (Banning water bottles). So many people do not recycle single-use plastic water bottles in 2015 about 70% of plastic water bottles were not recycled. These plastic water bottles that people do not recycle end up in landfills or in oceans and will poison the animals that live there. Second, a study found that a bottle of water contains nearly twice as much micro-plastic than tap water. 93% of water bottles contain micro-plastic (Banning water bottles). One simple water bottle contains about twice as much micro-plastic as tap water. 93% of bottled water contains micro-plastic. This means that your normal everyday tap water is healthier for you than bottled water. Finally, In San Francisco single use-plastic water bottles were banned and thirty-one water fountains were added. In New York fifty-one water fountains were added (Banning water bottles). If we were to ban single-use plastic bottles there would be more water fountains for people to use. In San Francisco they banned plastic water bottles and thirty-one water fountains were added. They also banned plastic water bottles in New York and fifty-one water fountains were added. Bottled water should be banned for these
The banning of books is something I am against in general. I can understand why some parents push to have books banned, like maybe they want to protect their kids from early exposure and whatever, but what happens when you kid goes off in to the real world and not everything is
Why do people ban books? Especially for children? Shouldn't it be the students' choice of which book to read? Banning books is a very controversial matter that continues to grow in US schools as time goes on. Banning books started as early as the 1600s when the Puritan government outlawed New English Canaan by Thomas Morton.
They are banned to shield the teenage eye from content of the books. The sad part is that high school students have no say in the the process of banning books. Books are banned in high school to protect the teenage eye. To shield high schoolers from the painted picture of reality. Reality, the state of having existence.
This can make students very singular-minded and unaware of other perspectives. Personally, I wasn’t really familiar with the perspective of someone in gangs and how difficult it is for the next generation to break that cycle (THUG LIFE), which this book is all about. I gained valuable knowledge from reading that book, and I now am more aware of the generational wealth gap within the country and how wrong it was. In general, banning books has negative impacts on children because it puts limits on their intellectual freedom and diversity of thought, limiting critical thinking and narrowing their range of
Book banning is something that has happened for a long time that dates back to the book burnings. Banning books is something that is unnecessary, controlling the way kids think, and an almost tyrannical way of doing things. Book banning is not holding real concern for kids and does not encompass what actually is unsuitable for students, but encompasses the ideologies of the people who have the power to ban books. People who have such power do not base it off legitimate concerns but base it on their own personal religion and opinions.
The First Amendment states the basic inalienable rights we have in America, so why do we ban and challenge books that represent our freedom? Banning books only leads to one after another being banned, and taken off the list of books our libraries offer. The common theme when banning books comes primarily from parents, specifically parents of students who think that their children are reading a book too graphic or inappropriate for school literature. Topics getting banned the most include sexually explicit, offensive language (Racial and Homophobic slurs), along with violence.
There is a long history of banning books. Book bans before the 1970s were usually for sexual content but recently they have been banned for many other reasons. These books pose no harm to schools, even books that discuss such topics as Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, have been banned. If everyone could ban what they find offensive we wouldn't have any books to read. The people advocating for book bans all have the common goal of advocating for controlling what books are accessible.
1.) Books can be amongst some of the best teachers. Furthermore books teach us many things like new vocabulary and new ways of thinking, so we should embrace all books and not ban them. 2.) Additionally, most banned books go on to become classics.
There are countless reasons that everybody should know why books are being banned all over the world! One of the reasons is that parents do not want their children to be exposed to inappropriate topics. Moreover, some books discusses topics that people object to like dark arts and homosexuality. However, there are also reasons why books should not be banned. When children enjoy books, it improves their vocabulary, and it teaches them life lessons.
There are several reasons people want books to be censored in school libraries. Thomas Riggs, an editor for Gale, explains the primary reason books are banned is because
Banned Books are books that are prohibited by law or to which free access is not permitted by other means. Banning books is against the writers right for freedom of speech, which is the first amendment. Students have the right to read, reading is not illegal, so why ban books? If a reader is mature enough to handle some curse words or bad behavior then they should be able to read banned books. Some people believe books should not be banned in schools/libraries but just because you do not like it does not mean it should be taken away, that is the authors freedom of speech.
Every child deserves a proper education. Banned books are depriving students of a well rounded, culturally aware, literary education because of the culture that is discarded, the history that is being withheld, and the education that young people could get through these banned books. The point of history is to learn from it and learn from others mistakes, but how can we do that if we are not allowed to learn it. As teachers shouldn’t you be teaching us how to make judgment calls like understanding that Mark Twain was a racist, but a man of his time and that doesn’t change him being an amazing writer. We cannot learn things such as that if we cannot even read most of Mark Twain’s books.

When it comes to the side against the banning and censorship of books some good points are made. Going back to the American Library Association multiple points are made that are valid such as, “Books and other library resources should be provided for the interest, information, and enlightenment of all people of the community the library serves. Materials should not be excluded because of the origin, background, or views of those contributing to their creation.” It is important to the progression of society that censorships are not placed even on extreme or dangerous ideas because these can be learned from and discussed. It is true though, that these ideas getting to children could be very detrimental to them.
