Colonies fought and won a war against Britain to declare their independence. In the eighteenth century, being an American meant having a government that changes and evolves over time. It meant having ideas that change over time for the benefit of the people. While some of their ideas were terrible, they did help shape both Americans and America to what it is today. To be an American means to have the same rights as everyone regardless of who you are, the freedom to practice whatever you want, and obligation to try to make this as great of a country it could be. we have a government and that government has many powers one of those powers is to tax the american people. This wasn’t the case when we first declared independence united states could not tax the people. This was the case because they feared that they would be overtaxed by the government just like the british government did. Their head was in the right place, you can’t imagine people to pay taxes when their too high. That doesn't mean that should not tax people, because the only thing worse than a overly powerful central government is a too weak central government. That was one of the main things that the founding fathers argued about, weather we should have a strong central, make the constitution, or make the states keep most of the power. This caused them to separate into two groups the federalist and the anti federalist which argued to how the country should be ran. The Federalist believed they should have a strong central government one way of doing that is taxing the public, while the anti federalists wanted to keep power in the state and the local government. Both sides did provide good arguments, but without the federalist wouldn't have taxes. Many people think we should not have taxes, but their couldn't be a worse idea then these. One of the most influential countries of the world, the Unites States has only appeared on the global stage as a superpower in the last hundred years or so. Their economic decisions resonate through the world market and their navy keeps the seas shipping lanes free for all nations usage. They are looked to as enforcer of peace and freedom, from fighting communism in Korea to counteracting terrorism in the Middle East. However, this was not always the case. If there happened to be some pettifoggers or farmers that somehow made it into the state government, would you really want them designing the process for citizenship or would you want ace lawyers that really know what they’re doing to do it? The federal government should be controlling the tax amounts put on each export and import, because as shown during the time of the Articles of Confederation, when the states did it, everything went horribly wrong as the country couldn’t pay for battle funds or debts. Also, everyone from the states might not agree on fair taxing amounts so they might have different taxes or processes in each state, which is a raw deal for those that have to pay more or go through a lot more to become a citizen.
Imagine that you are a land owner in the late 1700’s and the king has just put out a new taxes and they are more than you can afford to pay. Would you just try and pay it or would you stand up for yourself and fight for your rights? A couple of hundreds of years ago, it was a bunch of colonies loosely connected by the constitution. Alexander Hamilton said, “Money is, with propriety, considered as the vital principle of the body politic; as that which sustains its life and motion, and enables it to perform its most essential functions.” The federal government's power to be able to collect taxes from the American people citizens is necessary for the country to run properly. The Federalist Paper's argument for taxes is that the government needs to collect taxes so that it can provide for the American citizens and be able to run correctly. Alexander Hamilton explains that “A government ought to contain in itself every power requisite to the full accomplishment of the objects committed to its care, and to the complete execution of the trusts for which it is responsible, free from every other control but a regard to the public good and to the sense of the people.”
The French revolution influenced U.S politics, as pro and anti- Revolutionary factions sought to influence American domestic and foreign policy. In 1790 the war with Britain was over and the people of the United States thought that it was time to build its institution of Democracy, Frontier, and Military. It was time to prove that this type of government could succeed.
Before the American Revolution, the colonists still considered themselves to be English and followed British rule. However, the American revolution allowed them to separate themselves from British rule and form their own separate power. This separate power unified the colonists who now shared the same political, religious, cultural, racial, historical, linguistic, and ideological views which were different from their views under British rule. Have you heard about federalism or what federalism is? At a certain point in our nation's history, our first constitution the Articles of Confederation where weak. The states had all the power and the federal government had no control or power over the country. States did whatever they wanted and the citizens did not like this, this led to Shay's rebellion which led to the revision of the Articles and then they came up with a new Constitution. This new Constitution gives power to the federal government and the states.
Gordon S. Wood, “the preeminent historian of the Revolution”, is a well known American historian who has received several awards such as the Pulitzer and Bancroft Prize for his historical books. In his book, The American Revolution: A History, he breaks down the key events based on his experiences and knowledge on the Revolutionary period. Wood was born in Concord, Massachusetts on November 27,1933. Wood teaches at many liberal renowned universities such as Brown, Cambridge, Northwestern , and Harvard. Now being eighty one years old, he recently retired from Brown University and lives in Providence, Rhode Island.
