Author Joshua Davis and Walter Isaacson had some disagreements among which is important, the leader or the smart one. Davis believes that the leader is the most important member of the team while Isaacson believes that the smart one is the most important member of the team. In “La Vida Robot” Davis highlights that a leader is an effective part of a team. He believes that because without a leader a the team would fall apart without any motivation or tasks to do when a leader is not even there. For example, Davis states,“ROTC had trained Oscar well: he knew how to motivate people. He made sure all of his that all of his team members were in the room and focused when he contacted experts to explain tough science concepts.” This explains that
In order to inspire Soldiers to win in battle, Colonel Freeman understood he had to gain their trust. His presence at training as well as fighting alongside his unit members on the battlefield, instilled confidence and reinforced trust in his Soldiers. He provided encouragement and confidence to his team. An example of that confidence was during an attack, Colonel Freeman, his executive officer, and his Soldiers laid out their weapons and consolidated ammunition for the last stand. Colonel Freeman displayed an even temperament and convinced his Soldier to believe that the conditions were not as bad as the seemed and he still had control of their destiny.
With the stroke of his pen, President Woodrow Wilson created the Reserve Officers Training Corps or ROTC when he signed the national defense act of 1916. However the story of ROTC started as far back as 1819 when Captain Alden Partridge established a program of military instruction called the American Literary, Scientific, and Military Academy which later became Norwich University. At the Academy, Partridge originated a system of education that combined civilian and military studies in order to produce citizen soldiers. The cadets at his school had rigorous educational courses and tiring physical training exercises. Captain Partridge’s academy became so successful that his practices spread to other schools in the United States.
It demands discipline. It builds character. It teaches team spirit and unquestioning obedience to authority, qualities needed for men in the military going to defend American
The soldiers also needed to know how to work as a team and that if a mistake was made it meant the death of everyone. This was exhibited when the boy Alexandros mistakenly left his shield on the ground and was seen by one of the older men, Polynikes. After being “tortured” (page 71), Polynikes put the entire platoon through rigorous and brutal training, where he repeatedly hit them in the face with a wooden tripod and made the boys preform and exercise known as “tree fucking” (page 73). The boys were put through this for days on end until finally they realized that they needed to be together and work as a team to save themselves as well as others (page
Joshua Davis author of La Vida Robot and Walter Isaacson author of Steve Jobs both had the same perspective . They believed in order to have a successful, strong team you need a team member who has adequate background knowledge in a particular subject. In order to make a successful and strong team you need someone with adequate background knowledge in a particular subject. In the text La Vida Robot, Joshua Davis states, “(Lorenzo)
Many major comparisons can be made between Coach Brooks coaching style in the development of the 1980 USA Olympic team and the development of Officer Candidates at OCS. Firstly, in indoctrination week at OCS Alfa Company built resiliency and came together though hardship in a stressful environment. Officer Candidates from all over the country, of all different ages, and all different levels of experience put differences aside and came together in an extremely short time to accomplish many small objectives. While accomplishing small objectives such as forming up on time, getting through the chow line efficiently and wearing the proper uniform are important, it does not take away from the main goal of graduating on May 12th as effective officers ready to serve the
From the lesson of training, I also realized the weight that officers hold when it comes to building trust, motivating, and pushing their soldiers. They are going to expect the utmost level of skill as well as professionalism that you must provide as an officer. In return, it is your right to expect the same level of excellence from your soldiers, being there to push them above the standard and holding them to being experts and professionals. This is a trait that no matter how skilled you or your soldiers may be, there will always be room for constant improvement and
In Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, leadership is an important element. Without it, everything would be chaotic and unorthodox. Jack, as a leader, helps everyone to take care of the problems they are facing in the moment; and that is why I would follow him over anyone else in the novel. His actions resemble what coaches would look for in their athletes, but less extensive. For instance, a football coach focuses on the week they are on instead of thinking about finals.
The desire to win in leadership sets a context where true beneficial aspects and lessons are learnt and taught. The lessons cover ethical principles and aspects of responsibility, respect, caring, fairness, and trustworthiness. These styles are based on the film Remember the Titans.’ The backdrop in the film presents itself in football and racism which are the aspects that clash with the leadership styles. Coach Herman Boone’s leadership styles manifest themselves based on his upbringing which provides a tough exterior.
Throughout this unit we have read about people who challenged expectations, challenging expectations are worth the struggles and sacrifices they faced because it made them stronger and they learned how they related to others that faced similar issues. First of all, in both “La Vida Robot” by Joshua Davis and “The Freedom Writers Diary” by The Freedom Writers with Erin Gruwell articles, students learned how to relates to others that faced similar issues they went through which made them stronger as human beings. In article “La Vida Robot” Davis states “Now the four underprivileged high school students from phoenix Carl Hayden community High School have a better chance of paying for college –and their story may soon be a big-budget movie.” This shows that throughout everything the students have been through, at the end they were rewarded with something life changing. Also in article “The Freedom Writers Diary” the authors The Freedom Writers with Gruwell state “I guess I’ll have to wait for the war to end like Anne and Zlata did except I won’t be taken advantage of I’m going to be strong.”
We all understand how to be a good Soldier. We must not only know those values, we must encompass them. As Dempsey says; (2010) “The Army Ethic begins with the moral values the Army defends” (p. 12). As a Human Resources Sergeant in the Profession of Arms, we have a calling. We have been called upon to take care of so many in so many different ways.
Among these five characteristics; military expertise, honorable service, trust, esprit de corps, and stewardship of the profession, I believe that military expertise and stewardship of the profession are the two characteristics that make a leader excel in the presence of their peers. ADRP 1 defines military expertise as, “Military expertise is the design, generation, support, and ethical application of land power, primarily in unified land operations, and all supporting capabilities essential to accomplish the mission in defense of the American people”. In order to gain trust from your subordinates for them to follow your guidance, a leader must have military expertise. Without being an expert in your field, subordinates will not trust your guidance provided unto them. ADRP 1 defines Stewardship of the Profession as, “Stewardship is the responsibility of Army professionals to ensure the profession maintains its five essential characteristics now and into the future”.
This gives them an idea if they are suited to be in the military and if they have what it takes to become soldier. Military mentions that “Decision-making and problem solving are two skill domains that are fundamental to most types of military tasks”, informing the reader the skills that are the most important (“instructional design”, 2015). The article also mentions “the significance of cognitive styles and learning strategies in the design or delivery of training programs” showing how meticulous the military is with their training (“instructional design”, 2015). This information is extremely beneficial to those who are thinking about joining the military and are interested in what and how they
These are just a few of the army values and how they play an important part in an effective leader and follower’s day to day
Leadership is shown in the novel Animal Farm by George Orwell and the film, I, Robot, directed by Alex Proyas. the two texts both explore the use of leadership by Spooner and Napoleon as the two main characters portraying leadership in many ways, for example the abuse of power, what motivates leaders and leaders and their influences. I, Robot was written during more modern time to warn people of the technology in the future Animal Farm was written During the Russian Revolution where things were tough and Starlin was trying to convince the people of Britain. The public were trying to figure out what was going on, the two text were written during this time and are linked to the things that were happening in the community.
