PTSD is a psychological disorder that is a big deal and a problem for many people. It can ruin people's lives if they can not function after it and can not live a normal life. It is a traumatic condition in which bad memories and experiences from events can be triggered and brought back out of nowhere. People with this condition usually can live mostly normal until something triggers their PTSD and then they can go into a stage of intense emotional and physical reactions to a traumatic event they are re-experiencing. The PTSD makes them feel stressed or frightened even when they are not in danger. PTSD is often an issue for military veterans after being through all the combat and things of war they have seen. It is not always the case though that people with PTSD have experienced a traumatic event in their lives like war though there can be other causes as well such as the death of a family member. PTSD and its symptoms usually begin quickly after the event that has triggered it or at least usually within the first three months. The four common symptoms are re-experiencing, avoidance, arousal and reactivity, and cognition and mood. Re-experiencing symptoms include such things as flashbacks, bad dreams, and frightening thoughts. Avoidance symptoms could be staying away from places or things reminding the person of the traumatic event and also avoiding thoughts of the event as well. Arousal and reactivity symptoms include being easily startled, feeling tense or on edge, having difficulty sleeping, and having anger outbursts. Cognition and mood symptoms could include trouble remembering key information from the traumatic event, negative thoughts about oneself or in general, distorted feelings like guilt or blame, and loss of interest in enjoyable
