In the novel the Running Man the author, Michael Bauer, captures the experiences of a marginalised character, Tom Leyton. The main characters of this novel are Joseph and Tom Leyton. The author reveals what occurred to a Vietnam war veteran, Tom Leyton after the Vietnam war, as well as how he was excluded from society because he had post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Tom was shut out from society because of his illness.The author represents this through isolation, marginalisation and experiences of torment in society. Tom Leyton faced many difficulties during and after the Vietnam War. He wanted to be accepted by society and wanted to return to work. However, society didn't accept him, because he was viewed as different. This resulted in Tom hiding from society, with his sister Caroline to look after him. He was tormented by society because of his actions from his past, towards a child. This, as well as the death of his friend, made Tom suffer severely. Tom, had lots of faith in God, which he though should have helped save his friend. Once Tom lost faith, he agonised and was doubtful of almost everything. This torment can be seen through the simile, “Tom is like the dark interior of a house”, as Tom is looked upon by society as bad and as a madman, going crazy from his past. Society tormenting Tom can also be seen through the paintings, created by Joseph of Tom. The paintings present Tom in different ways. It starts with just a few lines on the page and as Joseph visited more and got to know him better, the paintings became more fuller. However, at the end of the book Joseph believes the rumours about Tom from society and draws Tom in an evil way. With unforgiving terrain and the seemingly never ending destruction, the environment of war can be the biggest challenge faced. The constant presence of death and the savage actions of men, the jungle and villages of Vietnam that was home to many families can become a nightmare within days. The book says, “I walked away. People were not supposed to be made like that. People were not supposed to be twisted bone and tubes that popped out at crazy kid’s-toys angles.
In day 4 of the reading, Holden takes a cab drive and once again brings up the question of where the ducks go during the winter, symbolizing his childlike curiosity and how he wants to be free from society just like the ducks. Holden brings up the question about the ducks, asking "does somebody come around in a truck or something and take them away?" (Page 82). This shows Holden's childlike curiosity is still prevalent, asking a question that is obviously untrue but an ideal solution to the question. It also symbolizes how he is like a duck, who does not know what he wants to do, whether it is to transition into an adult and fly away, or stay in the lake and freeze in childhood.
Readers, especially those reading historical fiction, always crave to find believable stories and realistic characters. Tim O’Brien gives them this in “The Things They Carried.” Like war, people and their stories are often complex. This novel is a collection stories that include these complex characters and their in depth stories, both of which are essential when telling stories of the Vietnam War. Using techniques common to postmodern writers, literary techniques, and a collection of emotional truths, O’Brien helps readers understand a wide perspective from the war, which ultimately makes the fictional stories he tells more believable.
Author Steven Kaplan interpretation went as followed. “In his most recent work of fiction, The Things They Carried, Tim O'Brien takes the act of trying to reveal and understand the uncertainties about the war one step further, by looking at it through the imagination.” (Kaplan, Steven) Although Tim O’Brien actively served his country by fighting in Vietnam, his character Lt. Cross was a representation of O’Brien in this story. O’Brien gives his readers a combination of Uncertainty mixed with imagination, this enabled the story to have a complex variety of issues to keep his readers engaged in the story.
Humans are and will always be social creatures, they like to stay in groups, chat with others, and socialize with other humans and some might even say that it is necessary for survival. So knowing this, the greatest dilemma one could face would be the separation and social outcasting of themselves from the group. Isolation can be very impactful and dangerous for one’s self, for a glimpse of its consequences authors write tales of separation and isolation which the reader can soak in and understand its potential. Crace Chua and F. Scott Fitzgerald are two examples of authors who shared stories of social dissolution in The Great Gatsby and “(love song, with two goldfish)”. This theme of isolation and separation affect many aspects of a story but the characters and various conflicts are truely altered and somehow brought to life when real human nature is tested and denied.
Speeches are used to commemorate points of history, and inform the general public of the product of their history but what makes a speech so impacting on it’s audience? Rhetorical devices give speeches and works of literature a way that can convey feelings or ideas to a viewer. When addressing during times of war or chaos, people such as Ronald Reagan, Abraham Lincoln, and Winston Churchill used these terms to better connect with their audience. Without these tools of the english language, dialogue and literature would be all the more dull and unappealing. However, with these useful instruments, writers and speakers can better communicate through some of the many rhetorical devices.
The physical nature of war makes it nearly impossible for the soldiers to communicate their experiences to those living outside of the combat zone. Communication in war is different than how civilians communicate and that makes it impossible for the soldiers to escape their guilt by telling their stories to others. In war language becomes sharper and everything is in code however, after coming home the soldiers realize there are new codes that have been put in place that no one taught them. During the war the men try writing letters to those closest to them in an effort to express themselves, but are ultimately disappointed when the recipients fail to respond or do so in a way that minimizes their suffering. Tom Leyton is just like a silkworm in his cocoon but doesn 't remember how to get out. This statement is emphasised in the quote “Things happen in life…everyone picks up… baggage…that they have to carry along with them… but sometimes the baggage becomes too much, too terrible, and it overwhelms them and it becomes all that they are”. This quote illustrates that Tom is labelled and excluded from society through their ignorance of what he is experiencing on a personal level. Society is drawn to leaders that have good rhetoric, propaganda, and charismatic personalities, and society supports them despite their immorality. Society is concerned about stability more than the morality of their leaders and will support immoral leaders in times of crisis to provide stability. In history there have been multiple leaders that have used rhetoric, propaganda and charismatic personalities to gain power, despite their morals.
The older man 's behavior contrasts with that of the persona who is young and has barely experienced life. Whereas the speaker is eager to discover life and have new experiences to escape her reality, the older man avoids his truth by focusing on mundane details of his experience in the Vietnam War. Furthermore, the older man was once a young man himself, surely eager to have new experiences, as he enrolled in the army. This decision is a made up mind to exchange our will to the will of God. I agree with Michael Jackson's song, The Man in The Mirror, and I have shared those lyrics with the church members and the women's ministry.
In enduring these complex emotions, this section was the most remarkable part. One of the first apparent emotions the boy experiences with the death of his father is loneliness to make this section memorable. The boy expresses this sentiment when he stays with his father described as, “When he came back he knelt beside his father and held his cold hand and said his name over and over again,” (McCarthy 281). The definition of loneliness is, “sadness because one has no friends or company.”
