The Salvation Army’s Immense Impact A charitable organization is a nonprofit organization that provides relief to oppressed individuals who lack shelter, food, health care or education in their country. In 1865, the Salvation Army was founded by a Methodist Church in order to help the homeless. Ever since that year, the Salvation Army has spent their time helping the homeless. People who have helped the Salvation Army range from ordinary citizens to famous celebrities. However, the Doctors Without Borders charity is an organization that harms many doctors and citizens in the USA. According to the Encyclopedia of Religion, the Salvation Army has “changed a number of lives of those who were homeless” and the homeless people that have no jobs transfer to the people who have jobs now and have a stable future ahead of them (McKinley). The Salvation Army can change a person’s way of life and the person who has gone through this rough patch of their life, can enjoy what life was really meant for once again, to be happy and joyous. If one person can change one person’s life forever, think about how many more lives can be positively affected if everyone else in America donated money to the Salvation Army. According to the organization of the Salvation Army, there is a new project they have started up to help the homeless, which is called “Project Hope. Project Hope stands for Homeless Outreach to Place and Empower and this project has helped hundreds of people every year” (Salvation Army). This project has helped a number of homeless people off the streets and into a more compatible future for the homeless to have. According to the Medecins Sans Frontieres Company, the Doctors Without Borders organization “has the responsibility to protect” and help oppressed individuals, like refugees, who need medical support and help save the lives of those who are injured overseas with the money donated to them (Weissman). However, the Doctors Without Borders financial statements states that the company is making a profit off of the money donated instead of making a difference to the international community. According to the Doctors without Borders financial statement, the organization has a “revenue of $345,784,546 and an expense of $283,552,858” (Doctors Without Borders Finance Report). The expense included the money going into the area Doctors Without Borders’ main goal, but this shows this organization is making a profit of $62,231,688. According to the financial summary of the Salvation Army, this organization has a “revenue of $2,926,856 and an expense of $3,536,977” (Salvation army Finance Report). The Salvation is making a loss of $610,121. The Doctors without Borders organization is doing this for a profit, but the Salvation Army puts the people first instead of the money profited from these donations other than putting money first instead of the people, which the Doctors without Borders organization does without any
Their mission statement is, “The mission of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is to advance cures, and means of prevention, for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment. Consistent with the vision of our founder Danny Thomas, no child is denied treatment based on race, religion or a family 's ability to pay.” (stjude.org). To make their mission statement happen, all their money comes from individual donations.
In 1980, less than $1 million was raised in the workplace on the solicitation outside of the United Way auspices. (Oster35-36) But by 1990, they were close to $10 million and rapidly growing. (Oster36) In many parts of the country, the combined Health Appeal-did a fundraising for the master of the disease research that has launched a major challenge to the United Way.

Any time a scandal of this magnitude is exposed; donors tighten their grip on contributions, making it difficult for the thousands of honest and hard-working nonprofit charities to secure resources for their organizations. 2-c. Wounded Warrior Project –This recent scandal will halt donations from many supporters of the WWP organization, causing more suffering to our wounded and disabled veterans. Though many projects will continue, several issues will stall important operations within the charity. With limited sources of assistance, our veterans depend on volunteers, donations and funding from outside the US Federal Government. 3-c.
The American Red Cross (ARC) was founded in 1881 by Clara Barton, and is an organization which is supported by financial donations from individuals and businesses. The ARC was put into place to provide emergency relief for individual which has some type of disasters has caused them displacement or family emergencies. The ARC also helped prepare for disaster and sometimes even prevent disasters. The American Red Cross was highly criticized for the way they handled the emergency reliefs of the 2001 terrorism attack which happened on 9/11 in 2001 and New Orleans flood Katrina in 2005. Even though the ARC has did a lot of good work they have had many allegations of fraud, and theft brought up against them.

That’s why it makes perfect sense to expand and reconstruct the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) to undertake such a massive service. Veterans don’t deserve to be treated like this, the forgotten hero’s, now the homeless, and the starving.

Executive Summary The Salvation Army of the United States is one of the largest national providers of welfare services; operating in 128 countries worldwide, consisting of over 1.5 million members (i.e., officers, soldiers’ and adherents) (The Salvation Army USA, 2018). The organization prides itself for working with and advocating for the rights and needs of disadvantaged people. The promotion of values for human dignity, justice, hope, compassion and community makes the organization a leader in social justice and protection of the rights of disadvantaged and vulnerable people (The Salvation Army USA, 2018).
Every day, a soldier is wounded in war. Brave souls have vowed to put their life on the line for the protection of others and freedom of the country. These brave souls are either killed or wounded in battle. Sadly, most wounded soldiers do not have the money to have therapy for their injuries and are not able to see their families without spending even more money. Then, in 1990, an organization called the Fisher House Foundation was created.
Before the First World War, the Red Cross introduced its “first aid, water safety, and public health nursing programs” (Who is Clara Barton, 2008) In regards to natural disasters, they provided relief for the Great Depression during the 1930s and also the during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 which was the largest Red Cross Response in it’s history. Here they provided millions of people with food, shelter, and money to get back on their feet, emotional support, etc. Their first congressional charter was received in 1900 and the second in 1905. Then their third was adopted in May 2007 which “restates the traditional purposes of the organization” which includes being a form of communication between those in the American armed forces and their families as well as providing an international and national disaster relief and mitigation (Who is Clara Barton, 2008).

Peter Singer himself writes, “We can give to organizations like Unicef or Oxfam America” (Singer, 737). If the wealthy people were to help the poor out, there is no reason to bother in using children of the poor to feed the wealthy. The money that will be provided can go into making shelters in which those children can live happily. There is no reason for those who do not trust organizations, to be selfish. They themselves can create their own organization, give children shelters and their parents a job as well.
Can Christianity claim that its efforts for justice are any different than those of any other relief agency? Christians should support other charitable works undertaken by the world. The Bible is filled with examples of God using unbelievers to carry out his purposes. But if we cannot lay claim to a difference, we have to ask whether there any justification for the Church. What is this difference?
Although most of my involvement has centered around politics, where I have been an active volunteer in the current election cycle, my service also extends to the homeless community in the Quad Cities. After recognizing the extent of homelessness in Davenport, my friend decided to start a nonprofit 5K to benefit a local shelter and I immediately joined in the venture. By working with the shelter rather than independently, we were able to avoid the faults set forth in To Hell With Good Intentions.
