The Secret Life of Bees, written by Sue Monk Kidd, portrays a teenage girl named Lily Owens. Lily lives with her father ,T.Ray, on a peach farm just outside Sylvan, South Carolina. Lily is forced to deal with the troubles of being an abused daughter, without a mother, friends, or a better father. Set in 1964, racist men and women still roamed the streets downtown near Lily’s peach farm. When Rosaleen, Lily’s black stand-in mother, defends herself and is thrown in jail, Lily deserts her life in search of a new one. She and Rosaleen end up in Tiburon living in a pink house with three black women. But, Lily’s journey to discover more about herself and her mother, but also to escape her past, leads to new findings of unique loving …show more content…
Furthermore other key characters, like August and Rosaleen, displayed their continuing support and love for Lily and, later on, May, both in the movie and book. Zach, too, seemed to have the same feelings as his double in the book. If all of the characters in the movie changed their personalities the movie would have a totally different outcome. First one of the key differences that really stood out to me is that most characters dispositions remained the same as in the book, some, like May, were represented in the movie differently than anticipated. May acted, most of the time in the book, as a person without a mental disorder would and only at certain times was set off by specific words or actions. Compared to in the movie where there was a noticeable swing in her mods daily and there was a difference between May, her sisters, and other people on an everyday basis. This was significant to me because I thought of May differently after watching the movie and could not relate to her as much after seeing her as she was in the movie. Also, in the book T.Ray was illustrated as a rough, …show more content…
This makes a difference because in the book T.Ray was a looming darker character in the shadows and the reader didn’t know what he was doing or feeling and he could have been forgotten more easily the whole time Lily was with the Boatwright sisters. Differentiating from the movie where the watcher could see his frustration and desperation and not just assume what was going on. In conclusion, the journey Lily underwent helped her to discover more about herself and her mother and it lead to new unique loving relationships and hardships that were overcome. The similarities strengthen the best parts of both the book and movie, in my opinion. The aspects of the book that have been changed are differences but those differences are not bad. They accentuate the creativity of the movies filmer and his/her opinion on the book. The book is different from the movie but it is also similar. I have combined the movie and book together when I think about The Secret Life of Bees. I have learned what T.Ray was doing while Lily was away, from the movie, and I have also learned how delicate a person can be from May. I have chosen to critique
Time is like a beehive. In the center hides a sweet future, but the rough edges on the outside are often hard to get through. In Sue Monk Kidd’s The Secret Life of Bees, Lily Owens lives in a small town in South Carolina with her abusive father she calls T. Ray and nanny, Rosaleen. She’s also carried the burden of accidentally killing her mother at the age of 4.
In my opinion there are a lot of comparisons between the film and the book, but there are also differences between them too, but also they have impacted the audience in both the film and the
Permanence, perseverance and persistence in spite of all obstacles, discouragements, and impossibilities: It is this, that in all things distinguishes the strong soul from the weak. ”-Thomas Carlyle. In the novel Secret Life of Bees, Lily is a harmless, kind hearted girl who has experienced much in the short life she has lived. The last time Lily has felt kindness, gentleness, and love was when her mother was alive. “People who think dying is the worst thing don’t know a thing about life (2).”
Nearly 20 million kids grow up without a mother. In The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd Lily lost her mother at age four and had a father who hated her. Lily accidentally shot her mother at a young age, and ever since her father blames her for what happened. Lily decides to run away with her house maid, Rosaleen, and start a new life. Change can really affect a person, just like it did with Lily, T-Ray and May. Change is a crucial part of life.
The movie did seem to exclude some characters that were somewhat important, and change their personality. For instance, in the book Grandpa Will was yelling at the television and in the movie he was more of a fun-loving guy. The fact that the movie never says the angel of death, except for one time at the end, in the book when they say this it puts an emphasis on that this thing or person is very corrupt. Not to mention the fact the main character, Hannah or Chaya, is a different age in the two stories.
Another difference is that in the movie they go into town, but in the book it 's never mentioned. Something else that was different was that in the book the mood was happy most of the time, while in the movie the mood was sad. A difference between the book and the movie is that in the book momma was going to burn Byron, but in the movie she does not burn him. A big difference is that in the
One of the changes was in the characters. Look at Clarisse for example. In the book she was a 16 year old girl who didn’t go to school because people thought that she was “antisocial” and she didn’t fit in. In the movie she is much older she looks to be in her mid 30s and is not a student instead she’s a teacher.
The character of Lily Owens evolves and changes as any young woman would throughout the course of her life. Lily begins the book as an insecure, detached, and unaware teenage girl. We see how Lily changed into a wise young woman as she solves the mystery of her mother’s life. Towards the end of the book Lily transforms into a young woman who is much more confident, happier, and vicarious. Lily has learned about love and biases.
A book and a movie can be both the same and different. In The Outsiders there are many similarities and differences with the book and movie. They were the same because Johnny kills a man, they cut their, there was the movie scene, and Johnny and Ponyboy went to the church. Some of the differences is when Darry slaps Ponyboy but in the movie he pushes him, Johnny doesn't bring a lot of food in the book but does in the movie he does, when Johnny killed the man it was more described but it wasn't in the movie, and Johnny says he wants to kill himself in the movie. In The Outsiders one of the themes is “friendship”
The Narrative Of The Life Of Fredrick Douglass and Trouble Don’t Last Fredrick Douglass and Trouble don’t last are book genres that most people would not even try to approach, mostly because of how it is about slavery. As we all know most slavery books are not written by slaves but the book Fredrick Douglass was written by Fredrick Douglass himself, he himself was a slave. The Book Trouble Don’t Last was not exactly written by a slave nor by a black person either.
In the end I found the film to be easier to understand vs the book as it was an easier and more straight forward plot line whereas in the book it seemed to jump around leading to constant flipping between stories and pages to get a better
The Secret Lives of People The Secret Life of Bees, by Sue Monk Kidd, is an interesting story that connects human lives to bees. The story takes place in 1964 during the Civil Rights Movement and fourteen year-old Lily Owens leaves her abusive father and her home in Sylvan, South Carolina to go to Tiburon with hopes to find information on her mother. Throughout the story, Lily struggles with many internal conflicts and also meets several mother figures along the way.
This makes the movie less interesting and more jumbled. The book was an interesting read but overall i liked the movie better because I can see how other people see how I imagined the book and how it really turned out. The differences are very great in number just like most movies and books. In the movie, Lily doesn’t seem as depressed as she is
Mental Illness affects an immense amount of individuals no matter their race, culture or age. It is everywhere we go, yet still an issue some choose to ignore; whether it is the person facing the illness or those around them. People handle their sickness in a variety of ways. Some by using violence as their only answer, others run away from their issue and majority choose to accept and make the best of it. After reading the novel The Secret Life of Bees, it would be easy to think that the main theme is discrimination or family, but in reality it is actually focused on the toll that mental illness takes on a family.
Rosaleen was an very strong role model in Lily’s life. The author Sue Monk Kidd portrays it in the novel in many ways. Lily’s mother passed away and left when Lilly was just a little girl sitting at only 4 years old. Since that day Rosaleen decided too stepped in and showed her all the steps in life, even if she was there housekeeper but they still created such a strong bond.
